Dirty Hearts, Dirty Looks
The harsh fluorescent lights of the precinct flickered overhead, casting a sterile glare on the morning shift cops. The officers exchanged baffled glances over their steaming coffee mugs, their minds struggling to process the scene unfolding in their lobby. Normally, anyone bold enough to waltz through those double doors to formally clear their name was either a seasoned criminal with top-tier lawyers or genuinely innocent. Looking at Serena’s cool, steady composure as she stood tall at the front desk, the precinct silently bet on the latter. Yet, the sickening favoritism embedded within the wealthy Vance family quickly became undeniable to every observer in the room.
The contrast was stark and brutal. Camilla, carefully playing the role of the exceptionally frail adopted daughter, sat draped in a plush jacket on the waiting room bench. She was pampered, fiercely protected by the towering Vance brothers and Damian. Silas adjusted a thick blanket over her knees, Declan fetched her lukewarm water, and Damian kept a steadying, comforting hand hovering near her shoulder. Meanwhile, Serena stood isolated in the chilly hallway. Not a single member of her family cast a glance her way.
Observing the ridiculous, reality-show-level family drama, the female officer logging the case file narrowed her eyes. She had noticed that the wealthy parents deliberately denied their own biological daughter breakfast before dragging her out of the estate at dawn. Disgusted by the display, the sympathetic officer slipped away from her desk. She approached Serena, pressing a warm paper cup of hot cocoa and a foil-wrapped granola bar into her hands. Their eyes met. Serena offered a faint, sharp smile of gratitude. The officer gave a curt nod, silently acknowledging the isolation Serena endured.
The hit-and-run case cracked surprisingly quickly once the detectives dragged the actual driver into the interrogation room. Threatened with a lengthy prison sentence, the driver folded and confessed. He shouted that he was not hired by Serena at all. The money came from Maya P., a fiercely jealous high school classmate and direct rival dancer of Camilla’s.
Dragged into the station in handcuffs, Maya showed zero remorse. She loudly admitted she intentionally framed Serena to settle old, bitter grudges. Maya confessed to orchestrating the minor fender bender to sideline Camilla from their dance academy's upcoming lead recital role. She banked on the well-known fact that the Vance sisters’ publicized bad blood would make the blame stick to Serena perfectly. Maya knew the family would swallow the bait without a second thought.
Because Camilla’s actual physical injuries were remarkably minor, the Vances pushed for a lenient plea deal for the culprits. They wanted the scandal buried fast to avoid negative press. As an officer escorted Maya past the holding area, the dancer shot Serena a smug, satisfied look. Maya remained content with the knowledge that despite Serena’s immense wealth, the heiress remained just as trapped and despised in her family’s toxic web as ever.
The real mastermind was caught. Serena was officially cleared of the hitman charges. Yet, instead of offering the massive apology Serena rightfully deserved, the Vance family immediately shifted the goalposts to maintain her guilt. Arthur stormed out of the briefing room, his face flushed with misplaced anger.
"This is ultimately your fault!" Arthur barked, his voice echoing off the tiled walls. "If you had not bullied Maya in the past, she never would have targeted Camilla today! You brought this on her!"
A loud, echoing laugh of unfiltered disbelief erupted from Serena. She stared at the man who called himself her father, her tone dripping with toxic sarcasm. "Are you hearing yourself? If Camilla trips over her own feet tomorrow, is it automatically my fault for simply walking by?" She tilted her head, locking eyes with Arthur. "Why do we not just put the fragile girl in a plastic bubble and pray to her daily?"
Enraged by her sharp disrespect, Arthur lunged forward. He furiously raised a hand to strike her face right there in the precinct.
"Hey! Drop the hand, now!" the observing female officer intervened sharply and loudly. She stepped between them, her hand resting heavily on her utility belt. "Try that again, and I will book you for assault. Keep your hands to yourself."
Arthur lowered his arm, his chest heaving with exertion, but the near violence did not deter the rest of the family. Corinne, Declan, and Silas eagerly piled onto the verbal abuse.
"You knew you were innocent," Declan accused, stepping up beside his father with a vicious scowl. "You intentionally turned this private situation into an embarrassing public circus purely to steal the spotlight from Camilla!"
Silas sneered, crossing his arms over his chest. "Someone is just desperate for attention."
Unfazed and hardened to their cruelty, Serena met their glares. She freely admitted to being the monster they envisioned, firing back with a venomous monologue.
"Sure," Serena stated, her voice slicing through the tension. "I am the drama queen. I am the big bad villain you all desperately want me to be. But at least I am human." She let her gaze sweep over their pristine, designer-clad figures, coldly dissecting their hypocrisy. "Unlike you. Your pretty faces spit lies. Your brains are on permanent vacation. You use your eyes for decoration, and your hearts are so twisted they would gross out a sewer rat. You refuse to face reality."
The precinct fell silent. A few cops stifled coughs to hide their amusement. Impressed by her fierce spunk, the female officer stepped forward. "Ms. Thorne," she announced, handing back a signed release form. "You are officially cleared to leave the station. Have a good day."
Serena did not waste another breath on her blood relatives. She turned her back on her family and confidently headed for the glass exit doors.
"Where do you think you are going?" Corinne urgently demanded, her heels clicking against the floor as she chased after her daughter. "You need to return to the estate immediately to prepare for your upcoming engagement party with Damian!"
At the mere mention of the word 'engagement,' Camilla reacted. She dramatically wobbled on her feet, letting out a soft gasp as her legs supposedly gave out. Her grip tightened on Damian’s muscular arm, and she practically collapsed against him, burying herself in his broad chest. Damian instinctively wrapped both of his arms around her waist, cradling her close to keep her steady.
Serena stopped dead in her tracks. She spun around to face them, her smile sharp and lethal as a razor. She pointed a manicured finger straight at the couple.
"Mrs. Vance," Serena loudly instructed, her voice ringing clear through the lobby. "Take a very good look at exactly who Damian is intimately holding in the middle of a police station."
Every single eye in the room fell on the overly intimate pair. The supposed fiancé was tightly cradling his fiancée's sister in a deep, protective embrace.
"Do you truly think throwing our engagement party is a good idea given the visual evidence standing right before us?" Serena mockingly questioned.
Unwilling to ever see the dark truth, Silas immediately jumped forward to fiercely defend the couple. He stepped in front of Camilla, his face twisted in a vicious sneer.
"Dirty hearts only see dirty things," Silas aggressively justified, pointing an accusing finger at Serena. "Camilla is sick, and Damian is merely helping her stand! Only a toxically jealous type like you would make a massive deal out of a pure, innocent interaction."
