The Dame Who Bites Back

"Well, hell. Who's this little scrapper?"

Dante Morland did not wait for an invitation to join the carnage. He was already storming off a remarkably foul mood. Walking his massive dog through the biting, bitter night air was supposed to clear his head, but inadvertently stumbling into this gritty, blood-spattered alleyway brawl provided a much better outlet.

He stepped over the groaning thug he had just kicked into the shadows. The remaining gang members turned their attention toward him, brandishing rusted pipes and brass knuckles. They made a fatal error in judgment.

Dante waded directly into the violence. He moved with a cold, terrifying fluidity that belonged to a seasoned predator, not a corporate heir. He caught a swinging fist, twisted the limb until the joint popped with a sickening snap, and drove his knee into the attacker's ribs. He brutally and effortlessly ground the greedy thugs' bones to absolute dust, dismantling them piece by piece. Fists shattered against pavement; screams choked on blood. Dante did not break a sweat, finishing the job with ruthless precision until the alley fell dead silent.

Stepping over the twitching bodies, Dante strolled casually back to where the girl lay on the freezing concrete. Even battered, she was breathtakingly stunning. She stared up at him, radiating the fierce, unyielding, do-or-die defiance of a cornered wolf. She had fought with cold, precise strikes, and now a glittering, starry resolve burned bright in her wide eyes.

Dante halted near her boots, looking down at her exhausted frame. A dangerous smirk touched his lips.

"Quick hands," he noted, his deep voice slicing through the cold air. He mocked her survival tactics. "But you are way too soft. You need to yank the weeds out by the roots, or they just grow right back." He leaned in closer, his broad shoulders blocking out the faint glow of the streetlamp. "So, tell me. What is my reward for saving your ass?"

Before Serena could even process the sudden, heavy debt being forced upon her by this lethal stranger, a large, furry mass barreled out of the darkness. Dante's dog, having been ignored during the bloodshed, bounded up and bumped him hard from behind, demanding his attention.

Caught off balance, Dante's expensive boots slipped on the slick pavement. He crashed heavily down onto her prone body.

The wind was knocked from Serena's lungs as his dense, muscular weight pinned her against the unforgiving concrete. In the chaotic, tangled fall, Dante thrust his hands out to brace himself. His large hand inadvertently landed squarely on her chest, his palm pressing directly against her left breast.

The firm, heavy grip molded perfectly over the soft curve of her flesh. Caught completely off guard by the stark, accidental intimacy of clutching a woman's breast, Dante's brain short-circuited. Instead of immediately pulling away, his long fingers contracted, giving her breast a dumb, reflexive squeeze.

A sharp, blinding spike of pain instantly flared intensely through Serena's injured arm from the crush of his body. That physical agony, combined with the sheer audacity of his hand clamping down on her chest, snapped the last thread of her patience. Her carefully maintained cool mask violently shattered.

Enraged by the blatant violation, Serena did not cower. Her fierce survival instinct took over. She shot her uninjured hand up, grabbing the heavy fabric of his collar, and yanked him down until their noses brushed. She snarled viciously, "Didn't anyone ever tell you not to poke your nose in street fights?"

Before Dante could even register the threat, Serena braced her neck and violently slammed her forehead directly into his.

The brutal, hollow crack of bone colliding with bone echoed off the brick walls. Dante let out a low grunt, his vision swimming with dark spots as he rolled off her, clutching his skull.

Serena did not waste a single second. She sucked in a massive breath and split the night air with a furious, piercing scream. "Police! Help me! Assault!"

Her voice carried for blocks. Sirens wailed almost immediately, cutting through the silence of the industrial park. Red and blue lights flooded the alleyway. Consequently, the untouchable, notoriously lethal Morland heir spent his midnight sitting in a bleak, concrete holding cell, locked up like a common criminal.

The police station smelled of stale coffee, sweat, and cheap floor cleaner. Dante sat on the rigid metal bench, his long legs stretched out in front of him, unfazed by his dismal surroundings.

When his frantic assistant, Gavin, finally arrived to bail him out, the younger man was sweating bullets. Gavin fully braced himself to receive a brutal kill order against the audacious girl who had dared to play his boss. No one laid a hand on Dante Morland and lived to talk about it.

The heavy iron door unlocked. Dante stepped out of the holding cell, ignoring the terrified precinct captain apologizing profusely behind him. He looked straight through the reinforced glass of the lobby.

Dante simply watched Serena strut away from the precinct doors. Her clothes were torn, her knuckles bruised, yet she walked with her head held high, refusing to look back or show an ounce of fear.

Dante raised a hand, rubbing his bruised, aching forehead as a dark smirk played on his lips. He turned to his shaking assistant.

"Sir," Gavin whispered, waiting for the execution command.

Dante coolly ordered, "Dig up absolutely everything on her."

As the bleak dawn finally broke across the city skyline, painting the clouds in bruised shades of purple and gray, relentless, buzzing calls forcibly dragged Serena back to the sprawling, hostile Vance estate. Her phone vibrated incessantly in her pocket the entire ride back, demanding her presence.

The absolute second she stepped through the opulent, towering front doors, the heavy silence of the grand foyer cracked.

Her father, Arthur Vance, stood waiting at the center of the marble floor. He marched straight up to her, his face twisted in unadulterated rage. He did not ask where she had been. He did not hesitate. He drew his arm back and struck her viciously across the face.

The sharp, echoing crack of his palm against her cheek caused her head to snap to the side. The metallic tang of blood instantly flooded her mouth.

"You are a damn embarrassment to this esteemed family!" Arthur roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandelier above.

Serena stood frozen. Her ears rang. Slowly, she turned her head back to face the people who shared her bloodline. No one in the grand foyer bothered to ask about her missing night. No one looked closely enough to notice the fresh, ugly bruises decorating her arms, or the exhaustion weighing heavily on her shoulders.

Her mother, Corinne, stood by the sweeping staircase, her arms crossed, glaring at Serena with undisguised disdain. Her brothers stood nearby, their expressions cold and unforgiving.

And then, there was Camilla.

Camilla lounged gracefully on the plush designer sofa, wrapped in an expensive silk robe. She was the actual, hidden mastermind behind the street thugs who had cornered Serena in the alley. Camilla safely hid a sly, victorious smirk behind a flawless, pristine facade of sisterly concern. Camilla had clearly covered her tracks perfectly, setting a flawless trap that the entire Vance family had swallowed whole. The hired goons had failed, but Camilla managed to spin the narrative, painting Serena as the reckless, delinquent instigator.

A heavy, suffocating resentment swelled in Serena's chest, tightening around her heart like an iron vice. She looked at her father's red face, her mother's sneer, and Camilla's concealed triumph. They had already passed judgment.

Serena did not even bother to argue. She refused to open her mouth to defend herself against this impenetrable wall of blind hatred. She was done playing the victim, and she was done seeking their nonexistent approval.

Her eyes locked onto Camilla.

Serena took a step forward. She marched straight past her screaming father, ignoring his demanding voice. She closed the distance to the lounging Camilla with purposeful, heavy strides.

Camilla's smug smirk faltered. She opened her mouth, feigning innocent confusion.

Without a single word, Serena raised her hand and slapped her adopted sister incredibly hard across the face.

The sharp, violent sound cracked like a whip through the mansion. The sheer force of the blow snapped Camilla's head violently to the side, tangling her hair across her face.

Corinne jumped up in absolute horror, her eyes wide with disbelief. "Serena! What the hell is wrong with you?" she screamed, rushing forward, her hands shaking.

Arthur froze, the anger draining from his face, replaced by pure shock.

Serena ignored them all. She stared down at Camilla, watching the fake innocence crumble into genuine fear. Calmly, methodically, Serena wound her arm back and delivered a second, equally vicious slap to the other side of Camilla's face.

The second strike echoed even louder than the first. The sheer impact knocked Camilla back against the cushions. Now, both of Camilla's perfectly pale cheeks glowed with a matching, furious, stinging red.

The explosive tension sucked the remaining air out of the room, leaving the entire family rooted to the marble floor in paralyzed shock.
