A Kiss in the Dark Hallway

POV VAL.

I stared up at the man blocking my exit, my chest rising and falling with rapid, shallow breaths. The sheer gravity of his presence trapped me right against the sticky wood of the bar counter. He leaned in just a fraction more, and I felt the blistering heat rolling off his skin. His deep, resonant voice dropped lower, sliding under the thumping bass of the club, sending shivers racing straight down my spine.

"What is your name, beautiful?" he asked.

The casual, smooth slide of his words made my internal thoughts shatter into a chaotic mess. Blaring alarms screamed in my head, a frantic chorus demanding I turn and run for the nearest exit. I was standing toe-to-toe with a man who possessed a devastating level of confidence, the kind of man who ate girls like me for breakfast. I forced my eyes away from his perfect jawline, desperately scanning the writhing mass of bodies thrashing under the club's strobe lights. Where the hell was Chloe? I needed a rescue. I needed an out right this second.

But the stranger standing in front of me refused to let up his pressure. The heavy weight of his intense gaze pinned me down, making the loud, crowded room feel suffocatingly small.

I needed a shield. Sarcasm was my only available weapon in this losing battle. I kept my head turned toward the chaotic dance floor, refusing to meet those piercing blue eyes again.

"Are you some kind of stalker?" I bluntly asked. I threw the words out like a defensive wall, hoping the harsh question would make the situation easier for my frantic mind to handle.

He let out a low, rich chuckle that rumbled through the narrow space between us. I risked a sideways glance, unable to stop myself. He wore an incredibly, devastatingly sexy smile that dug deep dimples into his cheeks. That smile hit me like a physical blow to the ribs.

"I was just admiring you from afar," he smoothly explained, his tone laced with a dark, magnetic amusement. He leaned an inch closer, his shoulder brushing mine. "At some point, I noticed you were smiling a bit too much at someone. I was genuinely glad to deduce that your companion for the night was merely a friend. It clears the path for me."

Before our tense standoff could escalate into something I could no longer handle, a sudden force clamped around my wrist. The human hurricane known as Chloe materialized out of the flashing neon darkness.

"Val, let's go!" she shouted over the blaring track.

She yanked my hand without a single word of warning. Her grip was relentless as she violently dragged me away from the relative safety of the bar counter. I stumbled in my heels, pulled straight into the suffocating center of the dance floor. The crush of sweaty bodies swallowed us whole.

I surrendered to the moment, deciding it was better to lose myself in the music than obsess over the man at the bar. The heavy, thumping rhythm of the bass rattled my ribs and guided my hips. I threw my head back, letting the wild energy of the crowd wash over me. I laughed at my own awkwardness, my hair sticking to my damp neck as I tried to match Chloe’s relentless pace.

But the illusion of freedom was a lie. Beneath the music and the friction of a hundred strangers brushing past me, an acute, painful awareness gnawed at my nerves. He was still sitting there. Even though I was buried in the center of the room, I could feel his eyes tracking my every movement.

I spun around, letting the blinding red strobe lights wash over my face, and caught his gaze through the sea of dancing bodies. He sat perched on his barstool, looking like a dark predator holding court. He didn't look away. Instead, he deliberately raised his glass of amber liquid to me in a silent, mocking toast.

I cursed him under my breath, my heart doing a traitorous flip against my ribs. He was an incredibly intriguing idiot. A gorgeous, infuriating idiot who knew exactly what he was doing to my nervous system.

I kept dancing, using the physical exertion to burn off the nervous energy he sparked in me. Time blurred into a haze of neon lights and heavy beats. Several minutes later, pure exhaustion hit me. Sweat dampened my skin, and my lungs burned for fresh air. I signaled to Chloe and started shoving my way through the dense wall of people, heading straight back to the sanctuary of the bar counter.

I scanned the row of stools as I approached. Empty. I completely lost sight of him in the shifting crowd. A bizarre, annoying pang of disappointment flickered in my chest before I mercilessly shoved it down.

Chloe intercepted my path again before I could order water. "Let's hit the bathroom," she demanded, her fingers locking onto my arm. She pulled me firmly toward the narrow corridor at the back of the club, dragging me away from the main floor.

We pushed through the heavy acoustic doors, and the deafening noise muffled into a dull roar. But before we even reached the stalls, a guy Chloe had danced with earlier caught her attention near the vending machines. She abandoned me without a second thought, slipping into the crowd and leaving me stranded.

I stood alone in the dizzying, dimly lit hallway. The walls seemed to tilt on their axis. The aggressive strobing lights from the main floor bled through the doorway, making my vision swim. I slumped against the cool painted brick, pressing my shoulder into the wall. I closed my eyes, taking slow, deep breaths to ward off the sudden wave of nausea brought on by the strobing lights and the cheap whiskey sloshing in my stomach. I just needed one minute of peace to pull myself together.

My fragile quiet shattered in an instant.

"So, it's Val, right?"

The deep, familiar voice sent a massive shockwave straight down my spine. I spun around too fast. My high heels caught on the uneven floor tiles, and my body forcefully bumped right into a massive, hard chest.

My hands instinctively flew up to catch my balance, flattening against the solid, warm muscles beneath his dark shirt. I looked up, my breath catching in my throat. Seeing his face this close again brought an immediate, traitorous wave of relief washing over me. A genuine smile broke across my mouth before I could stop it, an honest reaction that I completely failed to hide. I was actually glad he found me.

He stared down at me, his tall frame boxing me in against the brick wall. The air between us cracked with heavy tension.

"Are you going to keep ignoring me?" he asked, using that infuriatingly sexy, dominant tone that made my stomach flutter.

I tilted my chin up, fighting the magnetic pull of his presence. "I will, if you're lucky," I immediately shot back.

He took a slow step closer, erasing the remaining space between our shoes. He flashed a smile radiating pure, arrogant energy that swallowed all the oxygen in the narrow corridor. "I absolutely do not believe in luck."

"Oh, really?" I challenged him, raising an eyebrow. The alcohol pulsing in my veins washed away my usual caution. "And what do you believe in?"

He leaned down, the shadows of the hallway carving sharp angles into his perfect face. "Power, control," he answered. The words hung in the air, dripping with palpable, heavy lust.

I let out a breathy laugh, refusing to be entirely dominated by his intense aura. I pushed my shoulders back against the wall, trying to project a confidence I did not feel. "Well, I believe in concepts like freedom. Free will. Independence."

Before the final syllable could fully leave my mouth, his large hand shot out. His fingers clamped around my wrist with a firm, inescapable grip.

"Hey—" I gasped.

He didn't give me a chance to protest. He aggressively pulled me away from the main path. In one fluid, brutal motion, he shoved me into a much darker, hidden corner of the hallway near an emergency exit. The shadows instantly swallowed us. His massive, muscular body pressed flush against mine, pinning my back tight against the cold plaster.

I gasped for air, but there was nowhere to breathe. His large hands slid down and firmly gripped my hips, completely locking me in place. The sheer weight and heat of him overwhelmed my senses, leaving me absolutely breathless. Panic flared bright and hot in my chest. I pressed both of my hands flat against his broad chest, genuinely struggling to draw air into my burning lungs.

He didn't back off. Instead, he deliberately ground his hips against mine. The rigid, thick hardness of his erection was undeniably clear against my stomach. The raw, explicit friction sent a molten jolt of pure shock straight to my core.

"It doesn't work that way with me," I whispered weakly. My voice trembled, betraying the frantic pounding of my heart.

His gaze darkened, the vibrant blue of his eyes morphing into a pitch-black hunger. "It does," he whispered back, the sound rough and scraping against the dark space.

Then, without any warning, his lips violently crashed over mine.

The kiss was a massive shock to my system. There was no hesitation, no gentle buildup. His mouth was soft yet unyieldingly firm, claiming mine with overwhelmingly bold confidence. I tried to keep my lips sealed, but his hand moved from my hip to grip the back of my neck, holding me steady. His tongue forced its way past my lips. He explored the inside of my mouth with a rough, blistering heat that instantly melted every ounce of my resolve.

The taste of expensive liquor and mint swept over my tongue. My hands, originally meant to push him away, curled into the thick fabric of his shirt. My body betrayed my rational mind, arching upward into his solid frame. I desperately, achingly wanted more of him. The kiss deepened, consuming me, dragging me under a dark, heavy tide of pure desire. I let out a soft moan against his mouth, a sound I couldn't swallow down.

When he finally pulled back, the sudden loss of his mouth left me completely dazed. My chest heaved, dragging in ragged breaths of the stale club air. My knees felt like liquid glass, barely able to support my own weight.

He didn't let me recover. He leaned his forehead against mine, his hot breath fanning across my swollen lips. "Come with me," he whispered, turning the words into a dark, raw command.

I blinked, trying to clear the thick fog of lust drowning my brain. "No," I gasped out. The word sounded pathetically weak, a token resistance.

Refusing to accept defeat, he tilted his head. His mouth traced a burning path along my jawline. He began pressing hot, open-mouthed kisses down the sensitive skin of my neck. He sucked gently at my pulse point, the wet heat of his mouth sending a sharp, pooling heat straight down between my legs. My inner thighs trembled.

"I know exactly how much you want to," he murmured right against my heated skin, his teeth lightly scraping my collarbone.

He was so incredibly presumptuous. He possessed a level of arrogance that should have repulsed me, but damn it, he was so fatally attractive. Every touch felt like a lit match dropped straight into a pool of gasoline.

"No," I whispered again, completely lying through my teeth. My entire body melted under his expert touch. I squeezed my eyes shut, clawing desperately for any fragment of logic to save me from making a massive mistake. I tried to use reason, my voice stammering in the dark. "It doesn't work this way. I don't... I don't even know your name yet."

He stopped. The wet heat of his mouth lifted from my neck. He raised his head, looking down into my flushed face. The shadows couldn't hide the raw intensity burning in his eyes.

"Damian," he finally revealed, his voice a low, dark rumble.

Before I could even process the name rolling off his tongue, he immediately followed up. "Can we go now?"

The sheer, unbroken arrogance of the request snapped me back to harsh reality. I let out a breathless, disbelieving laugh. I gathered whatever physical strength remained in my trembling arms. I placed my palms flat against his chest, digging my fingers into his shirt, and pushed hard.

The sudden burst of physical effort caught him slightly off guard, breaking his iron hold just enough for me to create an inch of space between our bodies.

"No, Damian," I told him firmly, forcing my tone to stay steady despite the rapid beating of my heart. "I have my reasons."

I didn't wait for his rebuttal. I twisted my shoulders, dodging his outstretched hand, and quickly slipped past his towering frame. Escaping the suffocating heat of that dark space against the wall felt like breaking the surface of the water after almost drowning. I smoothed down my skirt with shaking hands and started fast-walking down the corridor, aiming for the safety of the loud, crowded main floor.

I threw a parting piece of advice over my shoulder, my voice sharp. "Don't waste your time on me."

I heard the heavy shift of his boots on the floor. He turned smoothly to face my retreating back as I walked away. His voice echoed down the long, empty hall, cutting through the muffled bass.

"Is this all just some kind of twisted game to you?" he questioned.

I froze mid-step, the harshness of his tone hooking into my spine. I slowly looked back over my shoulder.

Damian stood just outside the dark alcove, the dim neon light cutting across his harsh, beautiful features. He accused me without holding back a single punch. "You're purposefully playing hard to get. Dancing exclusively for my eyes. Teasing my senses. Intentionally getting me rock hard against that wall, and then you have the audacity to say no."

His mischievous, intensely direct gaze pierced right through my fragile defenses. He stripped away all the polite excuses. He laid out the raw, dirty truth of what just happened between us, affecting me on a completely visceral level. He didn't dress it up in pretty words; he called out my bluff with brutal honesty.

As I stood frozen in the hallway, the absolute truth of his words crashed over me. I could physically feel the heavy, wet desire aggressively pulsating between my thighs. My core throbbed with a hollow, dark ache, demanding I turn around, march right back to that dark corner, and let him finish exactly what he started. My body screamed at me to surrender to the overwhelming physical lust tearing through my veins.

I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted copper. I forced myself to turn my back on him. I took a deep, shuddering breath, filling my lungs with the stale air of the club, desperately searching my frantic mind for any scrap of rational reason to keep my feet moving forward.
