The Alpha's Arrival
Heroine/Rogue POV
"Gunfire."
I muttered the word under my breath as sharp, distant shots cracked through the dense forest air. Rough leaves brushed against my face as I shifted my weight on the thick oak branch, crouching high in the canopy above the Venom Moon Pack compound. They forced me out years ago, tossing me away to rot, but some of these wolves were still my family. Most of them were just innocent bystanders caught up in a corrupt system.
Escaping into the human world had changed me. I didn't train to fight for sport or to show off in a ring. I trained relentlessly just to survive the streets. Dirty fighting, human martial arts, striking fast and lethal. But recent whispers of an Alpha King taking the throne—the first to rise in two centuries—drew me back. I needed to see this supposed king for myself.
Below me, black-clad royal soldiers slipped through the evening shadows toward the packhouse.
"They’re here," I whispered, sliding my combat blade from its leather sheath. "About damn time."
A panicked voice drifted up from a Venom Moon guard on patrol below. "They’re raiding the compound. Orders straight from the Alpha King."
A cold smirk pulled at my lips. So, His Majesty finally got tired of waiting for a formal invitation.
The soldiers fanned out with military precision. Eight stayed in the main courtyard while a smaller squad breached the packhouse doors. I let gravity do the heavy lifting, dropping silently from the high branch and landing in a predator's crouch right behind their rear guard.
*Crack.* I snapped the first soldier's knee sideways.
*Thud.* I drove the steel hilt of my blade into the second one’s temple before he could even turn around.
"Enemy in the perimeter!" one of them shouted.
Way too late.
I spun on my heel, ducked under a wild, desperate haymaker, and drove my knee hard into his groin. He folded like cheap paper, hitting the dirt with a breathless groan.
"Dumb wolves," I muttered, sidestepping a lunging attacker. "All muscle, zero strategy."
"Seize her!" the squad leader barked.
Three massive, snarling guards rushed me at once. I used the thick trunk of a nearby pine, running two steps up the rough bark to backflip over the first guy. I landed light on my toes, swept the legs out from under the second, and buried my elbow into the third’s jaw. Teeth rattled. A spray of blood hit the dirt.
"Damn, this rogue is fast!" a soldier yelled, scrambling backward to put space between us.
Another one charged, blinded by wounded pride.
"You boys really don’t learn, do you?" I taunted. I slipped past his clumsy swing and delivered a clean, brutal kick to the side of his head. He dropped instantly, out cold.
Before the rest of the squad could swarm me, a voice boomed across the dusty courtyard. It wasn't just loud; it carried an Alpha command so heavy it made my bones ache.
"ALL SOLDIERS, STAND DOWN."
The royal guards froze in place. Just like that. The blind obedience drilled deep into their DNA took over.
I straightened up, rolling my shoulders, and locked eyes on the man stepping through the clearing dust. He didn't just walk; he commanded the space. Raw power radiated off him in waves, bending the very air around him as he approached.
"I am Alpha King Draven," his voice echoed like thunder over the quiet courtyard. "This pack is under investigation for severe mistreatment and flagrant violation of the Werewolf Rights Act. Alpha Garret and his family will be transported to the Valor Moon pack to stand trial for these crimes."
I glanced over. Alpha Garret, the man who had made my early life a living hell, was already on his knees, heavy silver cuffs binding his wrists. His Luna and sons knelt beside him, looking pathetic.
Garret looked up, his lip curling into a furious sneer when he spotted me standing over the unconscious royal guards.
Draven’s hard expression shifted. A faint, amused smile touched his lips as he surveyed the scattered bodies at my feet. "That was quite impressive. So, who might you be?"
"She’s just some rogue bitch," Garret spat, rattling his silver chains.
*Crack.* A royal guard backhanded Garret so hard his head whipped sideways, leaving a bloody split on his cheek. Garret cowered in the dirt, letting out a pathetic whimper.
I let out a dry, mocking chuckle. "Well, he’s not wrong."
Draven’s eyes narrowed, his gaze calculating as he studied my fighting stance. "You fought like a seasoned warrior. What’s your name?"
I shrugged, twirling the combat blade in my hand before sheathing it with a snap. "Didn’t you hear the man? Just some rogue bitch."
A muscle ticked in his strong jaw. "Rogues don’t stick around to defend packs. They tear them apart to gain power and control."
"Oh?" I arched an eyebrow, crossing my arms over my chest. "So, why are you here, then?"
"I came to protect," Draven stated, his tone unwavering and full of conviction. "We’ve brought medical care and food. Your pack will be registered and cared for. If a suitable Alpha isn’t found within their ranks—"
"You’ll just handpick a new puppet who is obedient to you?" I cut in, my tone dripping with biting sarcasm.
"I don't want obedience," he countered, taking a slow step closer. "I want stability. Safety."
"For wolves like us?" I let out a harsh, cold laugh. "We’ve never had rights in this world. Don’t stand there and preach to me about your precious act."
He took another deliberate step toward me. The raw power rolling off him was suffocating, but I planted my feet and held my ground. "What is your name?"
I bared my teeth in a warning snarl. "Not interested in bonding, Your Majesty."
"I’m not here to dominate you."
"No?" I challenged, tipping my chin up defiantly. "Then why call yourself King? Kings demand obedience, do they not?"
His voice dropped an octave, rumbling deep and dangerous in his chest. "True Kings only want loyalty and respect."
I stared him down, refusing to blink or back away. "Those are earned. Not demanded."
The wind shifted abruptly. A sharp gust blew through the courtyard, catching my hair and carrying my unique scent straight across the short distance between us.
Draven stopped dead in his tracks.
His nostrils flared, pulling the air into his lungs. His pupils blew wide open, swallowing the dark color of his irises. I watched the monster beneath his skin claw its way to the surface. His gaze ignited, shifting into a piercing, unnatural golden glow. His chest heaved as his inner wolf took the wheel.
He staggered back half a step, the word tearing from his throat like a prayer and a curse.
"Mate."
I froze. The blood drained from my face. My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.
No. No. Hell no.
Draven took a desperate, reaching step forward. "You... you’re—"
"Not. A. Chance," I growled.
Pure, visceral panic hijacked my brain. Survival instinct screamed at me to move. I turned on my heel and sprinted for the treeline, my boots kicking up clouds of dirt as I launched myself forward.
"Wait!" Draven roared.
I didn’t look back. I vaulted up the thick trunk of a massive redwood, digging my fingers into the rough bark, and launched myself high into the forest canopy. I leaped from branch to branch, moving wild and reckless, driven by the blind terror of being caged again.
"Track her!" Draven shouted from the courtyard, the panic in his voice laced with the heavy, undeniable weight of an Alpha command. "Do not lose her!"
I heard the royal guards scrambling through the underbrush below, but I tuned them out. I wasn’t listening.
I wasn’t his. I wasn’t anyone’s.
And I would never, ever be a prisoner again.
