The Ultimate Rejection
The grand foyer of the pack house felt like a tomb. Declan’s baritone voice echoed off the high ceiling, a cold command hanging in the stale air. *Defend yourself in front of her.*
Della stared into the dark depths of his eyes, searching for a lifeline. She found nothing but a chilling expectation. He wanted her to bare her teeth. He wanted her to stand tall against Luna Rowena, to prove she possessed the strength of a true Luna.
Her mouth opened, but her vocal cords refused to vibrate. The crushing weight of her childhood trauma wrapped around her throat like a steel wire. She had spent her entire life shrinking to survive, absorbing insults and blows just to make it to the next day. How could she suddenly roar? She rubbed her sweaty palms together, her shoulders rounding inward as she tucked her chin toward her chest. Her gaze dropped to the scuff marks on the marble floor.
Declan watched the fight drain out of her posture. The silence stretched, thick and suffocating. A muscle feathered in his jaw. The faint, desperate hope that had flickered in his chest vanished, snuffed out by the harsh reality of her silence.
Since the tragedy struck, Lexa and his mother had hammered a single truth into his skull: a broken, submissive mate would doom the pack. A Luna needed to be a shield, not a glass ornament waiting to shatter. Looking at Della cowering before his mother, Declan made his choice. His rational mind seized control, locking his heart in an iron box. Logic dictated survival.
Without another word, he turned his back on her. His heavy boots thudded against the floorboards as he marched out the front doors.
Della jerked her head up. The heavy oak doors clicked shut. Panic seized her lungs. She took a step forward, desperate to grab his arm, to pull his face down to hers and kiss the disappointment away. But her feet remained glued to the floor. Through the tall windows, she watched his black SUV tear down the driveway, kicking up a storm of gravel.
For two agonizing days, the pack house became a prison. Declan never returned. Della dialed his number until her fingers cramped, met only by the lifeless tone of his voicemail.
In his absence, Luna Rowena unleashed a new reign of terror. She commanded the household staff to treat Della worse than a stray rogue. The maids shoved her into the dirtiest chores, sneering as she scrubbed the grout in the bathrooms on her bruised knees.
Della endured the malice in silence. Her body ached, her hands raw and peeling from the harsh chemicals, but the physical pain meant nothing. She only wanted her mate.
*Do you think Declan is angry at us?* her wolf whimpered in the back of her mind as Della plunged her hands into a basin of freezing water, washing Rowena’s silken dresses by hand.
Della let out a ragged breath, the sound bouncing off the tiled bathroom walls. She stayed quiet, scrubbing the fabric until her knuckles bled.
*Do you think he is going to reject us?* her wolf asked. The question felt like a serrated blade twisting between Della’s ribs.
"How can you even say that?" Della hissed to the empty room, her voice cracking. "Declan would never reject us. He isn't planning on doing that."
She rubbed her bloodshot eyes. Sleep had become a myth, stolen by Rowena’s endless demands and the gnawing anxiety in her chest.
After hanging the dripping clothes on the line, Della trudged into the sprawling kitchen. Rowena had ordered a complicated pasta dish for lunch. Della stood by the stove, stirring a pot of bubbling tomato sauce, her vision blurring from sheer exhaustion.
Then, the scent hit her.
Pine needles and fresh rain.
Della gasped, dropping the wooden spoon onto the counter. The familiar, intoxicating scent of her mate drifted through the open archway. Her stagnant heart leaped, hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribcage. Inside her mind, her wolf jolted awake, pacing and clawing at the mental barriers, desperate to reach him.
He was home.
Della wiped her hands on her apron and ran. Her shoes skidded on the polished hardwood floors as she rushed toward the living room, a smile breaking through the exhaustion on her face.
She rounded the corner and froze.
The smile shattered. Her lungs stopped pulling in air.
Declan was stretched out on the plush leather couch. He wasn't alone. A woman with striking crimson hair sat straddling his lap, her slim, model-like figure pressed flush against him. Lexa.
Della blinked, lifting a trembling hand to rub her eyes. She pinched the soft flesh of her arm, praying for the sting to wake her from this hallucination. The sharp pain bloomed, but the image remained.
It was real.
Declan’s large hands gripped Lexa’s waist, his fingers digging into the fabric of her tight dress. Lexa’s hands tangled in his dark hair, tilting his head back as their mouths moved together. The sound of their wet kisses echoed in the quiet room. He kissed her hard, his chest rising and falling in sync with hers.
Della’s feet rooted to the carpet. A single, scalding tear spilled over her lashes, tracing a hot path down her pale cheek. Her mind fractured. Should she step forward and scream? Should she turn around and pretend the floor had swallowed her?
"What are you looking at?"
The harsh, mocking voice slashed through the room. Della flinched. Luna Rowena descended the grand staircase, her heels clicking like a metronome counting down to an execution. A twisted, triumphant sneer warped her elegant features.
"You wench," Rowena spat, stopping a few feet away. "You possess no shame. Standing there, staring at my son and his new mate kissing. How do you feel? Horny? I can call the perimeter guards to take turns on you right now if that's what you want."
Della bit her lower lip so hard she tasted copper. She ducked her head, staring at the scuffed toes of her shoes. Her hands trembled, and she rubbed her palms together in a frantic, self-soothing motion.
"How can you be so shameless?" Rowena’s voice escalated into a furious bark. "Do you truly believe my son still wants you? After proving time and time again that you are nothing but a useless liability? What kind of man wants a detrimental anchor dragging him down? You are an orphan. You have no family, no status, no backbone. You are weak. You are incapable of making a single, solid decision."
Rowena stepped closer, her eyes blazing with raw, unadulterated hatred. "Do you think you could ever be a good Luna to this pack? How can you be so selfish and inconsiderate to cling to him?"
The shouting finally broke through the haze on the couch. Declan pulled his mouth away from Lexa’s. He turned his head, his dark eyes landing on his mother, then drifting to Della’s trembling form.
Lexa let out an annoyed sigh. She sat up slightly, tracing her manicured nails down Declan’s chest, deliberately drawing his attention back to her.
"Please ignore her, Alpha," Lexa murmured, her voice dripping with calculated sweetness. "I want you."
Declan said nothing. His jaw set into a hard line.
Lexa leaned in closer, dropping her voice to a manipulative whisper that carried across the quiet room. "Remember your choices, Declan. You cannot walk over there and ruin this. Do not think only of your own heart. Think about everyone in this pack. Think about the impending threats. You know how much that incapable girl will destroy if you allow her to stand by your side. You know it is only me you need right now."
Lexa chose her words with surgical precision, driving them straight into the cracks of his grieving mind.
Declan stared into space, the cogs of his rational mind turning. The mate bond tugged at his soul, begging him to comfort the crying girl by the stairs, but he shoved the feeling down. Lexa was right. His mother was right. The pack needed strength. He decided in that fractured moment that he would formally reject Della the day he assumed the Alpha title.
Della slowly lifted her chin. Her tear-filled eyes sought his gaze, silently pleading for him to deny the cruel words, to push Lexa away.
Declan didn't look at her. He shifted his focus back to Lexa, his hands tightening their hold on her waist, preparing to pull her down for another kiss.
The air punched out of Della’s lungs. The constriction in her chest grew so tight she thought her ribs might snap. She pinched her thigh, digging her fingernails into her skin to stop the agonizing sobs from ripping out of her throat. Rowena shot her one last disgusted glare before turning and walking down the hall.
Della cast a final, shattered glance at the couch. Declan’s mouth met Lexa’s again.
Della spun around on her heel. She fled back to the kitchen, her breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps. The moment the swinging door closed behind her, the tears flowed freely, blinding her vision.
She stood over the stove, weeping as she finished the lunch preparation. Her hands shook as she plated the steaming spaghetti and ladled the boiling hot, thick red sauce over the top. She placed the plates onto a heavy silver tray, wiping her face with the back of her sleeve.
She carried the tray into the dining room. Declan and Lexa were already seated side by side at the long mahogany table, their shoulders brushing.
Della approached the table on unsteady legs. She kept her eyes locked on Declan's profile, desperate for a fraction of his attention. Why was Lexa sitting in the Luna's chair? Why hadn't he defended her against his mother's vile words? Was he truly going to discard her? The questions hammered in her brain, demanding answers only he could provide.
She stared at him so intently she failed to track Lexa’s movements.
As Della stepped up behind Lexa’s chair, the red-haired woman shot up from her chair. Lexa drove her shoulder backward, deliberately colliding with Della’s chest.
The impact threw Della off balance. The heavy silver tray tipped forward. Della tried to yank it back, but Lexa intentionally stepped into the path of the falling plates.
The boiling hot spaghetti sauce splattered directly across Lexa’s bare arm and chest.
"Ahhh!" Lexa released a blood-curdling, theatrical scream, dropping to her knees and clutching her skin as if she had been doused in acid.
The heavy plates crashed to the wooden floor, shattering into dozens of jagged pieces.
Chairs scraped harshly against the floorboards. Declan and Luna Rowena leaped to their feet.
Declan closed the distance in a fraction of a second. He shoved Della hard in the chest. The force sent her stumbling backward until her spine collided with the edge of a mahogany sideboard.
He dropped to his knees beside Lexa, his large hands hovering over her red skin, his face twisted in concern as he grabbed a cloth napkin to dab away the scalding sauce.
*Don’t touch her, please,* Della’s wolf whimpered, a pathetic, dying sound in her mind.
Della pushed through the physical pain in her back and reached out for the mental link connecting her soul to Declan’s. She needed to explain. She needed him to hear the truth.
*Della, talk to Declan!* her wolf cried in rising panic. *Why did he turn his wolf off? I can't feel him! I can't talk to his wolf! Why is he doing this to us? Why?!*
Della hit a solid, icy wall in her mind. The mate bond—the warm, pulsing lifeline that tethered their souls together—had been severed from his end. He had used his Alpha dominance to slam the door shut, locking her out in the cold. It felt like her bones were being snapped limb from limb. Her wolf howled in pure anguish.
Before Della could process the spiritual agony, a shadow loomed over her.
Luna Rowena drew her arm back and delivered a brutal, open-handed slap across Della’s face. The crack echoed through the dining room like a gunshot.
The sheer force snapped Della’s head to the side. A sharp ringing pierced her eardrums. The pain reverberated through her jaw, and fresh tears spilled down her stinging cheek.
"You vicious wench!" Rowena bellowed, her chest heaving. "I knew you were useless, but I did not know you were capable of such calculated wickedness! I should never have allowed you into my home!"
Della ducked her head, clutching her stomach as quiet, broken sobs tore from her throat.
Declan rose slowly from the floor. He stood tall, his broad shoulders blocking out the light from the chandelier. He stared down at her, his eyes devoid of any warmth, any history, any love.
"Della," his voice was dangerously low, carrying a chilling finality. "I didn't know you possessed such a nasty spirit. How could you do this to Lexa? How could you be so spiteful to burn her skin out of petty jealousy?"
Della shook her head frantically, trying to form the words to deny it, but her throat remained paralyzed.
Declan squared his shoulders. His Alpha aura flooded the room, heavy and suffocating. "From now on, Della, I reject you as my mate."
The words struck like a physical blow to her chest.
Della’s head snapped up. The silver tray she still gripped by the edge slipped from her trembling fingers, clattering loudly onto the floorboards.
Inside her mind, her wolf collapsed. The majestic creature hit the dark floor of her consciousness, curling into a lifeless ball, paralyzed by the ultimate spiritual trauma.
Della’s legs shook under her weight. They felt like lead pillars, too heavy to lift, too weak to hold her up.
"Declan..." she called out in a broken whisper, and forced her foot forward, stepping toward him.
