A Defeated Rival Mocks

The camera shutter snapped in rapid succession, the blinding white light searing into Callista’s vision. She blinked away the glowing purple spots, a cold smirk already curving her lips.

Standing behind the phone lenses were two faces she knew all too well. Julian Pierce held his phone like a weapon, eagerly capturing her standing in the crumbling courtyard of the Thorne family's neighborhood. Beside him stood Bianca Vane, practically vibrating with triumphant glee. A third man lingered just a step behind them, his face echoing the same obnoxious arrogance, though Callista ignored his presence entirely.

Without missing a beat, Callista shifted her stance, moving to block her biological parents from the camera’s view. She fixed a deadpan stare on the intruders. "What are you doing here?" Her voice was flat, devoid of any surprise or fear.

Bianca lowered her phone and plastered on a blinding, theatrical smile. "Callista! We’ve known each other for years. Now that you’ve finally found your real birth parents, I simply had to come and congratulate you in person."

Callista didn't bother returning the fake pleasantry. The news of her not being the true daughter of the wealthy Mercer family had already spread through Oakhaven City's elite circles. Vultures like Bianca—who had spent years seething with jealousy—were thrilled to watch her fall from grace. They were here for blood. Callista remained silent, letting them expose their own pathetic agenda first.

Gideon, missing the heavy tension hanging in the humid air, stepped forward. His calloused hands nervously smoothed the front of his worn shirt. "Oh, you’re Callista’s friends! We were just heading up for lunch. Elise made plenty. Why don't you come upstairs and join us?"

"Dad, I'm not close with them," Callista interrupted. She didn't raise her voice, but the finality in her tone was unmistakable. "They’ve just been stalking me. Please don't feel obligated to entertain them."

The welcoming warmth vanished from Gideon's face in an instant. He straightened his back, his protective instincts kicking in. He shot a hard glare at Julian and Bianca. "If my daughter doesn't want to see you, then you need to leave. Right now."

Callista placed a gentle hand on her father’s arm. "Dad, Mom, please head upstairs first. I'll handle this and be right behind you."

Gideon frowned, his jaw setting stubbornly. "No. You and your mother go inside. I'll deal with these punks."

Before Callista could guide him toward the stairwell, Bianca’s shrill voice sliced through the courtyard. She wanted an audience, and she was making sure everyone in the surrounding apartments heard her.

"Callista, how can you be so ungrateful?" Bianca cried out, her tone dripping with mock injury. "Until last night, you were the pampered princess of the Mercer family! You grew up in a massive mansion. You were chauffeured in luxury cars and had a dozen servants wiping your shoes. Now you've been tossed out on the street, reduced to living in this dump like a stray dog. We came out of the goodness of our hearts to bring you gifts, and you pretend we aren't friends?"

Callista’s expression didn't so much as twitch. She had faced far more vicious attacks in her life.

But the words struck Gideon and Elise like physical blows. The color drained from Elise's face, her hands clutching the strap of her cheap purse. Gideon looked at the cracked concrete beneath his feet, the crushing guilt of his poverty threatening to suffocate him. They wanted to defend their daughter, but the brutal truth of their financial reality tied their tongues.

Seeing their devastation, a twisted rush of satisfaction flooded Bianca’s veins. She snatched a woven fruit basket from Julian’s hands and tore away the clear wrapping paper. She thrust it toward Gideon, her lip curling in disgust.

"Mr. and Mrs. Thorne, I bet you’ve never seen fruit like this in your entire miserable lives," Bianca sneered. "These are imported blueberries. Callista’s absolute favorite. They cost over sixty dollars a pound. We bought them just for her. But since she thinks she’s too good to invite us upstairs, you can keep the basket. Feed them to her slowly. God knows she’ll never be able to afford a single bite of luxury like this ever again."

Bianca had originally planned to force her way inside to film the squalor of Callista’s new bedroom and broadcast it to the world. But looking at the peeling paint, the rust-stained gutters, and the lingering smell of cheap cooking oil in the air, she felt too physically repulsed to step foot inside Building No. 6.

Gideon’s face flushed a deep, furious crimson. The veins in his neck bulged. He was ready to throw the basket back into Bianca's arrogant face.

Julian stepped forward, sensing the escalating tension, and flashed a greasy, predatory grin. He decided to deliver the killing blow to Callista's reputation right then and there.

"Callista, don't act so high and mighty. We had a great time, didn't we?" Julian announced, pitching his voice loud enough to echo off the brick walls. "Last night was fucking unbelievable. You were so desperate you rode my cock in the backseat of my car until dawn. You even left your bra and panties soaked on my floorboards."

Julian’s eyes gleamed with spite. The reality was that he had spent the entire previous night driving his sports car in frantic circles, desperately trying to find her. It wasn't until morning that a Mercer family maid informed him Callista had returned home before midnight. The rejection had burned his ego to ash. Now, he wanted to drag her name through the mud until she had no choice but to crawl back to him.

His vile lie worked perfectly. Windows squeaked open. Several elderly neighbors and housewives, drawn by the shouting, stepped out onto their balconies and gathered at the edge of the courtyard. The whispers started immediately, buzzing like a nest of angry hornets.

"Did you hear what that boy said? They fucked in his car!"

"Isn't that Gideon's long-lost daughter? The one who was kidnapped?"

"Such a pretty face, but she's already letting rich trash fuck her in the streets. She left her underwear in his car? How shameless."

"I heard a wealthy family raised her. She's used to spending their money. Now she's back here, she'll probably spread her legs for anyone who can buy her a nice purse. Poor Gideon and Elise. They don't deserve this."

Every single word from the gossiping neighbors pierced Gideon and Elise like rusty needles. The pain in their eyes was unbearable.

Elise burst into tears, her body shaking. She clenched her fists, stepping in front of Callista as if her frail frame could block the horrific insults. "Shut your mouth!" Elise screamed at Julian, her voice cracking with raw agony. "If you say one more filthy lie about my daughter, I will... I won't let you get away with this!"

Gideon didn't say a word. He just silently reached for the cuffs of his faded flannel shirt and began rolling up his sleeves. His jaw was locked tight. He was fully prepared to beat Julian into the pavement, regardless of the consequences.

Before Gideon could throw the first punch, Callista stepped swiftly between her father and Julian. She placed her hands firmly on Gideon's chest, her posture radiating calm.

"Dad, Mom. Look at me," Callista commanded softly.

Gideon met her gaze, his breathing heavy, his fists still trembling with rage.

"Please trust me," she said, her tone steady and laced with an unshakable authority. "I can handle this trash. You both need to go upstairs right now."

Gideon opened his mouth to argue, to tell her that a father’s job was to protect his little girl from monsters like Julian. But he stopped. Callista’s eyes were devoid of panic. There was a terrifying, quiet strength in her demeanor—a silent promise that she was in total control of the battlefield.

He swallowed the lump in his throat, realizing that interfering might undermine her in front of these hyenas. He reached out and wrapped a protective arm around his weeping wife.

"Let's go upstairs, Elise," Gideon whispered gruffly, glaring daggers at Julian. "We'll watch from the window. If she needs us, we'll come back down and chase them off."

Elise looked from Callista to the sneering faces of Bianca and Julian, tears streaming down her cheeks. She gave a jerky nod. "Okay."

Once her parents disappeared into the dark stairwell of Building No. 6, the atmosphere in the courtyard shifted. The tiny bit of warmth Callista had shown her family vanished entirely.

She turned back to face Bianca and Julian. Without her parents there to absorb the crossfire, Callista didn't need to hold back. She stood tall amidst the cracked pavement and overgrown weeds, looking more regal than a queen in a palace.

A serene, pitying smile touched her lips.

"Bianca," Callista said, her voice carrying clear and sharp over the murmurs of the crowd. "Look closely at me. Look at where I'm standing. Even stripped of the Mercer name, even living in this neighborhood, I am still smarter, more beautiful, and more elegant than you will ever be."

She took a slow, deliberate step forward, her eyes locking onto Bianca's with crushing dominance.

"You can dress up in imported clothes. You can wave around your little sixty-dollar blueberries. You can even try to steal my old life," Callista continued, her words landing like precise knife strikes to Bianca's deepest insecurities. "But no matter how hard you try to play the part, you will always be a cheap imitation. You will never measure up to me."
