Kellan Sterling

Footsteps echoed against the polished marble floor of the Second Onyx Hotel. Thirty-year-old Kellan Sterling moved with the commanding stride of a man who owned the building. Which he did. As the newly appointed CEO of the Sterling Onyx Corporation, he controlled the largest enterprise in Bryce City. Authority radiated from his sharp jaw and tailored dark suit. Every inch of the property reflected his exacting standards, from the imported Italian marble underfoot to the gold-leaf trim lining the ceiling.

"Kira! Stop right there!"

A tiny blur of motion zipped past Kellan's legs. He paused, watching his four-year-old niece sprint away from the first-carat conference room, her small shoes slapping the floor.

"Kellan, get her, will you?"

He turned. His twin sister, Keira, stood by the heavy oak doors. She rested a hand on her swollen pregnant belly, catching her breath. "She threw a fit because I wouldn't buy her sweets. Please catch her! You know I love you."

Kellan adjusted his silver cuffs. There were only four women on earth who held any sway over his ironclad composure: his mother Silvia, his twin Keira, his youngest sister Siena, and the runaway toddler, Kira. To the rest of the female population, he offered nothing but cold indifference.

"Fine," Kellan said, his tone dry. "But tell your husband I expect a favorable deal with his company as payment."

Keira rolled her eyes, leaning against the doorframe. "Like you would accept a 'no' for an answer anyway. Just go!"

He wasn't worried. The staff knew the Sterling family. Kira, visiting from England, was practically royalty here. Security would track her down in seconds. Kellan took his time walking toward the grand lobby, scanning the sprawling expanse of velvet chairs and dripping crystal chandeliers.

A security guard hurried over, gesturing down the adjacent corridor. "Mr. Sterling. She is at the candy shop next to the café. Royce is keeping an eye on her."

Kellan nodded and headed toward the bright, pastel-colored storefront. Through the glass window, he spotted Kira. She stood beside a striking woman draped in a sapphire blue dress. She wore her thick hair cascading over her shoulders, framing a face that could only be described as breathtaking. But Kellan wasn't distracted by her beauty. The woman held a red lollipop, offering it to the little girl with a perfect smile.

His jaw tightened. His protective instincts flared, mingling with deep-seated cynicism. He knew this game too well. Calculating women always looked for a shortcut to his penthouse. Using a helpless toddler as a manipulative pawn to capture his attention was a classic move. He had played the target in this exact scenario twice before. He wouldn't tolerate it a third time.

Kellan pushed through the glass door, the entry bell chiming. He crossed the shop floor in three long strides and snatched the red lollipop right out of the woman's hand. He gripped the stick of the candy like a weapon, standing tall and imposing.

"Hey!" the woman gasped.

Kellan ignored her, glaring down at his niece. "Kira, what are the rules? You must never accept candies from a stranger."

He turned his freezing gaze to the woman in the sapphire dress, expecting the usual reaction. He anticipated wide, faux-innocent eyes. He expected her to bat her lashes, apologize profusely, and introduce herself while blatantly checking out his expensive watch. He prepared to crush her pride.

Instead, the mysterious girl fiercely glared back at him. Her eyes flashed with hot, unapologetic anger.

"Excuse me, sir," she snapped, her voice sharp enough to cut glass. "You need to take care of your own daughter! How could you just lose sight of her in a massive hotel? What an irresponsible father you are!"

Kellan froze. *Irresponsible father?*

The words knocked the breath out of him. He stood there, jaw slack, his sharp retorts dying in his throat. No woman had ever spoken to him like that. No woman had ever looked at him with pure disgust instead of fawning over his wealth and status.

Before his analytical brain could formulate a single syllable to correct her, she turned her back on him. She didn't spare him a second glance. She just marched out of the candy shop, the sapphire silk of her dress swishing around her legs. She didn't flirt. She didn't linger. She just stormed away.

"Uncle Kellan! You pushed that lady away!" Kira stomped her small foot, her lower lip trembling. "She was nice. Really nice."

Kellan stared at the empty doorway. "I'll be the judge of that," he muttered weakly, his forehead creasing in confusion.

The fiery defiance of the girl in the sapphire dress haunted him. Her flashing eyes and sharp tongue played on a loop in his mind throughout the private family dinner in the VIP dining room. He sat at the head of the round table, picking at his gourmet steak. The clinking of silverware and polite chatter of his family faded into background noise. He replayed the confrontation over and over, trying to dissect her angle, his usual sharp focus fractured by a stranger.

"Uncle!" Kira suddenly darted around the table to grab a dinner roll. She collided hard with a nervous server carrying a tray of drinks.

Glass shattered. Iced beverage splashed across the table, a heavy wave of dark liquid soaking straight into Kellan's tailored jacket.

"Oh! I am so sorry, Mr. Sterling!" The young server turned pale, his hands shaking as he grabbed a linen napkin. "Let me... let me take your jacket and have it cleaned, sir. Please!"

Kellan let out a slow breath, peeling the wet, sticky fabric off his broad shoulders. He didn't lose his temper. "It is alright," he said calmly, handing the ruined garment to the terrified attendant. "After it is cleaned, take it up to my penthouse on the top floor."

"Are you okay, Kellan?" his mother, Silvia, asked from across the table, dabbing her mouth.

"I am fine, mother." He glanced down at his crisp white dress shirt. The sleeves were rolled up, exposing his forearms. Without the jacket, he looked deceptively ordinary. His phone vibrated in his pocket. "I need to go change. I might as well meet Merrick down in the lobby to handle some late-night business first."

The hotel lobby hummed with late-night guests and soft jazz music. Kellan approached the sleek marble bar countertop where his executive assistant, Merrick, waited with a thick stack of corporate documents. Without his imposing suit jacket, Kellan blended into the background, resembling a high-end bartender or a manager on duty in his plain white shirt. Merrick, dressed in a crisp suit that mirrored Kellan's usual attire, looked exhausted but relieved that his boss was giving him a second chance.

"Good evening, Mr. Sterling," Merrick said, sliding the file forward. "Sorry I am late. Here are the corrected contracts."

Kellan leaned over the counter, flipping through the pages. His eyes scanned the legal jargon, verifying the fixes. He uncapped his pen and signed his name with sharp strokes. He tossed the pen down and shoved the folder back.

"I do not want the same mistake to happen again, Merrick," Kellan warned, his voice stern and commanding. He planted his hands on his hips. "I rely on you to review these documents endlessly before they land on my desk. Flawless execution is the minimum requirement. Understood?"

Merrick gulped loudly, tugging at his tight collar. "It won't happen again, Mr. Sterling. Thank you for your consideration."

Kellan opened his mouth to dismiss the assistant and head to the elevator.

"Hey, handsome!"

A vibrant, breathless voice sliced through the ambient noise.

Kellan turned. His breath hitched. It was the woman in the sapphire blue dress. She marched directly toward him. The fiery anger from the candy shop was gone. Her face was flushed pink. Her eyes twinkled with a wild, inviting, and desperate energy. She looked straight at him, but there was no recognition in her gaze. She saw a man in a white shirt standing behind a bar. She saw a regular hotel employee.

"I need your help," she pleaded softly, closing the distance between them. "Help me out, will you?"

Kellan's analytical mind screamed at him to step back. He needed to push her away, demand to know what game she was playing. But his muscles locked. His eyes dropped to her small, delicate face and the soft curve of her luscious lips.

Before he could issue a single command, she reached up. Her warm hands boldly cupped his jaw. She pulled his face down and kissed him outright on the lips.

The bustling lobby vanished. The clinking glasses, the murmuring crowd, the faint music—it all muted into dead silence. Kellan stood frozen, entranced. The sweet, blossoming scent of her perfume wrapped around him. The unprecedented tenderness of her soft lips against his mouth sent a jolt of electricity straight down his spine.

His heart drummed a frantic rhythm against his ribs. The cold CEO melted. He unwittingly let his eyes flutter shut, surrendering his rigid control to relish the brief but soul-stirring kiss.

When she finally pulled back, the world remained a blurred, spinning haze. Kellan's intense focus was consumed by her beautiful face. Then, the shock hit him. A heavy, rushing heat pooled in his groin. He went rigid, paralyzed by a sudden, unforeseen swelling and hardening stretching tight beneath the fabric of his tailored pants. It was a fierce, throbbing physical arousal. An erection. He hadn't felt this rush of blood, this primal, instinctive demand from his body, since he was a teenager. The selective dysfunction that had plagued his adult life vanished in the span of three seconds.

She smiled playfully, breaking his daze. "I know how much of a shock it is to kiss a beauty like me. But consider it a bonus for your hard work tonight."

She dug into her small clutch purse, pulled out a folded five-dollar bill, and hurriedly stuffed the cash directly into his white shirt pocket.

"Thanks for your service," she chirped. She spun on her heels. "Bye! Have a great shift!"

Kellan could not move. The most powerful man in Bryce City stood frozen like a statue by the bar, watching the sapphire dress disappear through the revolving glass doors. His brain could not fathom the overwhelming physical desire surging through his veins.

Beside him, Merrick covered his mouth in comical disbelief. His eyes bulged out of his head. "Mr. Sterling... you... you just kissed a girl."

Kellan ignored the babbling assistant. He looked down at his lower body. His chest heaved with ragged breaths. A profound realization dawned on him as he stared at the heavy bulge in his trousers. For the first time in recent medical memory, he was experiencing exactly what it felt like to have a rock-hard boner.
