Aurelian Moon and Kaelen's Survival

Thalia's POV

The words hung in the suffocating air of the car. I had to blurt the formal rejection out fast, frantic to push it past my lips before my cracking resolve shattered.

My body screamed in fierce rebellion against my own choice. Just moments ago, waking up pressed against Rylan's hard chest had sent an electric, addictive shockwave straight through my veins. The potent Alpha scent of cedar and rain demanded I crawl right back into his lap, wrap my arms around his strong neck, and beg for more of his touch. But trauma was a brutal master. If the red-haired monster who slaughtered my mother tracked me down, everyone around me would die. I refused to let this Alpha become another casualty. The safest move was killing the connection before a real relationship even began.

Deep in my mind, my inner wolf Sery released an agonized whimper, clawing at my consciousness in a desperate bid to stop me. I forced myself to ignore her cries. Survival demanded sacrifice. Suddenly, a sharp, physical tearing sensation erupted in the dead center of my chest. The severed mate bond ripped through my heart like a jagged, serrated blade. I gasped, grabbing the fabric of my shirt and doubling over in the backseat.

Rylan's hazel eyes darkened instantly. Dangerous fury swirled in his gaze as he stared back at me. He gripped the edge of the leather seat, his knuckles turning white as he visibly restrained his potent Alpha temper. Up in the driver's seat, the other man sucked in a harsh breath, clearly horrified by what I had just done to his leader.

"First," Rylan growled, his voice a low, commanding rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "I reject your rejection."

I shot him a fierce glare, gritting my teeth through the lingering ache in my chest. He wasn't backing down.

"Secondly," he continued, taking a slow breath to steady his racing pulse. "You and your sister are very weak right now. My brother and I are taking you back to our packhouse. That will be your home from now on. You need protection."

He didn't give me a single second to argue. His eyes narrowed as his sharp mind pieced the timeline together. "Did you say Emberwood earlier? As in the lost Frost Moon Emberwood pack?"

I pressed my lips into a thin line, refusing to confirm anything. Silence was my only shield against him.

But Maeva leaned forward from the front seat, happily chiming in. "Yes! We are the only survivors of the massacre. The daughters of Alpha Torin and Luna Myra."

The man driving the car arched an eyebrow, catching my gaze in the rearview mirror. His next words hit me like a physical blow. "Well, not the only survivors."

"What?!" Maeva and I shouted in unison.

We both lunged forward just as the SUV passed through a set of towering iron gates, tires crunching onto a pristine gravel driveway. We pulled up to a magnificent estate. The Aurelian Moon packhouse was a sprawling mansion framed by massive white pillars and a wide, sweeping stone staircase leading to the front doors. Vibrant autumn leaves rained down from the dense trees surrounding the wealthy property, painting the manicured lawn in shades of gold and crimson.

I remembered my father's old lessons. Aurelian Moon was a titan in our realm, an elite force dripping in wealth and silver mines. They used to be our closest allies before the attack.

"I just mind-linked someone inside," Rylan said, cutting through my racing thoughts. "He is coming down now."

Maeva and I scrambled out of the car, our boots hitting the dirt as we stared up at the imposing entrance. The wait felt like hours, my pulse thudding a frantic rhythm against my throat. Then, the heavy oak doors burst open.

A giant of a man stood on the top step, chest heaving as he gasped for air. He froze, staring down at us with wide, disbelieving eyes. The shock hit me so hard my knees literally buckled beneath me. I swayed on my feet, the world spinning in circles.

Rylan moved instantly, his strong hand gripping my waist to steady me. Despite formally rejecting him just minutes ago, I leaned back against his solid chest, greedily absorbing the radiating warmth and physical comfort of my mate. The bond was a stubborn, terrifying force that I could not fight.

"Oh, Kaelen, we missed you!" Maeva cried out. She sprinted up the steps, throwing herself straight into the giant warrior's waiting arms.

My feet finally unrooted themselves. I stumbled up the stone stairs. Kaelen reached out with his other massive arm, pulling me into a crushing embrace. The familiar scent of pine and old leather broke the last of my defenses. I buried my face into his broad shoulder and sobbed, releasing years of pent-up pain. Vivid, horrifying flashes of the attack assaulted my mind—Kaelen standing bravely by my mother's side, shielding us as the screams started.

Rylan's POV

I stood by the SUV, my jaw clenched tight as I forced Vargos into submission. My wolf paced relentlessly in the back of my mind, unleashing an intense, roaring wave of jealousy at the sight of our fated mate locked in another male's arms.

Down, I commanded him. Logic had to win here.

Kaelen was a mountain of a man. His thick, curly hair and full beard were streaked with gray. He was old enough to be Thalia's father, and the scent of their embrace carried zero romantic undertones. It was pure, desperate familial love.

Years ago, after the Frost Moon pack fell, Kaelen had wandered onto our lands, half-dead and broken. He proved his worth quickly, climbing the ranks to become one of my most elite warriors. He trained our youngest fighters now and was a pillar of our pack.

Thalia finally pulled back, wiping tears from her dirt-streaked cheeks. She looked up at him, her amber eyes swimming with confusion. "I went back. I searched the ruins for survivors, Kaelen. I didn't find anyone."

Kaelen shook his head, a profound sorrow carving deep lines into his weathered face. "I was knocked unconscious early in the fight, little wolf. I fell over the edge of the ridge and into the rushing river. The current dragged me miles downstream. When I finally woke up and made it back... everyone was gone. The whole pack."

He swallowed hard, his voice thick with emotion. "I couldn't find you, your sister, or the Luna among the fallen. I came to Aurelian Moon hoping that if any of you lived, you would eventually seek shelter with your father's old allies."

Kaelen's gaze drifted over Thalia's shoulder, scanning the empty driveway behind us. Hope flickered in his dark eyes. "Your mother?" he asked softly.

Thalia's breath hitched. She shook her head slowly.

Maeva let out a broken whimper, shuddering as she pressed her face back into Kaelen's chest. "A monster killed her," the little girl mumbled, her voice trembling. "A red-haired man. He ripped her head right off her shoulders in front of us."

A phantom blade of pure agony sliced through my chest. Thalia's trauma poured through our mate bond, searing my veins with her remembered terror.

We will tear this red-haired bastard apart, Vargos snarled, his bloodlust spiking. He hurt our little mate. He dies.

Agreed, I promised my wolf, my hands balling into tight fists at my sides.

Pure despair washed over Kaelen. His broad shoulders slumped, the fight draining out of him. "I failed her," he whispered into the crisp autumn air. "I failed the Luna, and I failed you both. I will never forgive myself."

"No, Kaelen," Thalia said, reaching out to gently squeeze his forearm. "You couldn't have stopped him. No one could have. He was a monster, stronger than any wolf I have ever seen. I don't even know what species he belonged to."

Kaelen nodded solemnly, his expression hardening as he looked down at the two orphaned girls. "He bypassed the frontline entirely. That monster was there specifically for her. Your mother was his only target."

Thalia's brow furrowed, pure puzzlement shifting her features. "My mom? Why would a monster like that hunt down my mother?"

Kaelen released a heavy sigh, the weight of a decade's worth of secrets settling onto his broad shoulders. He looked at Thalia, then at Maeva, his eyes grave.

"I think it is finally time to tell you the truth," Kaelen said, his voice dropping to a serious rumble. "It is time you knew exactly what I know about your bloodline."
