The Perfect Surprise
Alana's POV
Footsteps echoed against the polished marble floor of the mall as I pushed through the heavy glass doors. A rush of cool air conditioning washed over my heated skin, but it did nothing to cool the wild pounding of my heart. I was on a mission today. After eight months of dating, I was finally going to sleep with my boyfriend.
Eight months. That was a long time to keep a guy waiting, and guilt gnawed at my conscience whenever I thought about it. Whenever Trent and I curled up on his couch, wrapped in each other's arms, things would naturally heat up. His hands would roam, tracing the lines of my waist, trailing close to the edge of my jeans, and I would freeze. I always pushed his hands away. It was never a lack of desire. I wanted him so much it made my chest ache, but a heavy blanket of insecurity always managed to suffocate my urges. I spent years picking apart my own reflection, criticizing every curve and soft edge. The thought of stripping down and exposing my body under the harsh bedroom lights terrified me.
To add fuel to the fire, I was still a virgin. My girlfriends loved to tease me about it, making jokes at brunch about my untouched status. They meant well, but the constant reminders only added to the mounting pressure. I needed to be sure. I needed to feel ready, and more importantly, I needed to know Trent was the right person to cross that line with.
A few weeks away gave me all the clarity I needed. I just got back from Pennsylvania yesterday. My parents demanded a visit, claiming they missed my face and needed to spend quality time with me. Being their youngest child and their only daughter meant they hovered more than necessary. They smothered me with affection, tracking my every move until I felt suffocated. I could not really hold it against them, though. My older brother, Nolan, was always tied up with his own chaotic life and rarely found the time to visit home. That left me to absorb the brunt of their parental obsession. The trip was exhausting, but the distance made me realize just how much I missed Trent. I missed his laugh, his scent, and the way he looked at me like I was the only girl in the room. All my lingering doubts and bodily insecurities melted away during those quiet nights in my childhood bedroom.
Trent had no idea I was back in town. Nobody did. I sneaked back early because I wanted to surprise him. I kept picturing the exact moment he would swing his front door open, eyes widening in shock as he found me standing on his porch. I wanted tonight to be perfect for him. I wanted to give him a memory he would never shake. That was exactly why I was speed-walking past the food court and heading straight for the high-end boutique section of the mall. I needed a dress that screamed confidence and lingerie that left a lasting impression.
I spent thirty frustrating minutes flipping through endless racks of fabric. Hangers clattered against metal bars as I shoved aside floral prints, baggy sweaters, and modest midi skirts. Nothing caught my eye. Nothing felt right.
"Miss, may I help you?"
I turned around to find a young salesgirl smiling at me, a measuring tape draped casually around her neck.
"Umm... Hey," I sighed, dropping a terrible neon-green top back onto the rack. "I'm looking for a very nice sexy dress. And sexy undies, too." I preferred getting straight to the point.
The salesgirl raised an eyebrow, a knowing smirk playing on her lips. "My, my... looks like you have a lot planned for tonight, don't you?"
"Oh, you don't know the half of it," I giggled, feeling a flush of heat rise to my cheeks.
"Okay, come with me," she gestured, turning on her heel. I followed her past a display of denim and toward a secluded corner of the store glowing with warm, flattering lights. Rows of sleek, glamorous dresses lined the walls.
"Do you have anything specific in mind, or do you just want to buy what looks good on you?" she asked, running her fingers over a row of silk.
"Definitely what looks good on me," I answered without missing a beat. My excitement was bubbling over, but panic simmered right beneath the surface. I checked my phone screen. The digital clock flashed 5:00 p.m. Time was slipping through my fingers, and I still had an entire preparation routine waiting for me at home.
"Do you like this one?" She pulled a dress from the center rack. It was a straight, long-sleeved mini dress. I tilted my head, imagining the fit. The cut was decent, but the color was stark, blinding white. Wearing white tonight felt way too ironic, and it lacked the dangerous edge I was aiming for.
"Nah," I shook my head. "Too pure."
"Okay, then what about this one?" She swapped the white piece for a heavy, floor-length red velvet gown. It featured a dramatic slit running all the way up the thigh. It would definitely show a lot of skin, but the velvet material felt suffocating.
"Too formal," I dismissed it, stepping closer to the racks myself. "I need something fun. Something..."
My sentence trailed off as a sparkle caught the corner of my eye. Tucked between a row of dull blazers and basic slips, something shimmered. "Can I see that one?" I pointed eagerly.
She reached into the pile and pulled it free, handing the hanger over. My breath hitched. It was a short, black sequin dress. The fabric caught the ambient light, glittering like scattered stars. The design was flawless. It featured sharp side cutouts meant to expose daring slivers of my waist and tummy. One side left the shoulder bare, while the other extended into a sleek, fitted sleeve. It struck the exact balance between elegant and scandalous.
"Try it on," she urged, pointing toward the fitting rooms.
I rushed into the cramped stall, pulling the curtain shut. I stripped off my street clothes and shimmied into the sequin dress. The fabric hugged my hips, dipping perfectly at the side cutouts to showcase the curves I used to hide. I stepped out of the stall to check the large, three-way mirror in the corridor.
"This is the one," I announced, turning so the salesgirl could see.
"It really does suit you," she smiled, her eyes lighting up with genuine approval. "It makes you look incredibly hot."
"I know, right?" I spun around, the sequins flashing in the mirror. A fresh wave of confidence washed over me.
"Your man won't be able to take his eyes off you tonight. Or any other man, for that matter," she praised.
Her words fed my soaring ego. I admired my reflection for another solid minute before a sudden realization hit me. I slapped my forehead. "Oh, shit! I forgot about the undies."
"Oh, that won't be a problem," she waved a hand dismissively. "You stay here and change back into your clothes. I'll go pick a few sets you might like, and then you can choose from what I bring back."
"Thank you very much. You have been a big help to me," I beamed.
"There's no need to thank me. It's my job to help the customers," she replied before disappearing around the corner. She was right about it being her job, but I appreciated her enthusiasm anyway. I shrugged, retreated into the fitting room, and changed back into my jeans and t-shirt. A couple of minutes later, she returned. Her arms were overflowing with about ten different sets of delicate lingerie.
"Oh, wow..." I laughed, eyeing the massive pile. "I thought you said a few."
"I figured it would be a lot easier for you to choose from a lot more than just a few," she grinned, emphasizing the word. We both burst into a fit of giggles. She laid the delicate pieces out across a velvet-lined display table. There were corsets, thongs, silk bralettes, and sheer bodysuits. I stared at the chaotic spread of lace and straps, my brain short-circuiting.
"Can you please help me? It is kind of hard to choose. They all look so good," I pleaded, rubbing my temples.
"That's fine. Like I said, it is my job to help. But before we narrow it down, do you have any particular color in mind?"
I tapped my chin, thinking about the dress hanging in my stall. "It should probably be black. To match the dress. Or maybe red? Or both? I don't know." I threw my hands up in defeat.
"Alright, alright. Maybe this one?" She held up a stunning black-laced set. The delicate floral patterns wove across the sheer mesh, thin straps designed to sit high on the hips. "Or this one?" She presented a bright red set, but the neon undertone gave off a cheap beach-party vibe rather than a seductive bedroom look.
"The black one," I said without hesitation. "Definitely the black lace."
We hurried through the checkout process. The total price flashed on the register screen. The items were not exactly cheap, but they were worth every single penny. I swiped my card, grabbed the crisp shopping bags, and practically sprinted out of the mall.
I hailed a cab outside the glass doors, watching the city blur past the window during the ride back to my apartment. The second my front door clicked shut, the real preparation began.
I spent hours getting ready. I started with a long, scalding shower. The steam filled the bathroom, fogging up the mirror as the hot water worked the travel tension out of my tight muscles. I scrubbed my skin with a vanilla-scented exfoliator, shaved my legs until they were smooth to the touch, and massaged rich lotion into my shoulders. By the time I stepped out and wrapped a towel around myself, the clock on my wall read 6:15 p.m.
I settled onto the stool in front of my vanity. I applied my makeup with meticulous care, making sure every stroke was flawless. I smoothed on foundation, added a touch of blush to my cheeks, and blended a dark, smoky eyeshadow to complement the black dress. I coated my lashes in mascara and swiped a sheer gloss over my lips. My hair came next. I gathered the dark strands, twisting them up into an elegant but messy bun at the crown of my head, deliberately pulling loose a few front strands to frame my face.
Then came the main event. I slipped on the black-laced lingerie. The delicate mesh hugged my skin, making me feel powerful. Next, I pulled the black sequin dress over my head, wiggling until the cutouts aligned perfectly with my waist. Finally, I grabbed my black leather knee-high boots, zipping them up over my calves.
I grabbed my brown purse from the hook and pulled on my matching brown coat. I stood in front of the full-length mirror by the door, taking in the final result. The boots elongated my legs, the dress sparkled underneath the hem of the heavy coat, and my makeup looked flawless.
"Trent is so going to love this," I whispered to my reflection.
I grabbed my bag, stepped out of the apartment, and pulled the door shut. I locked the deadbolt and dropped the keys into my purse. I hated the idea of leaving my keys under a floor mat or hidden in a fake flower pot. It felt too risky.
I called for another cab. The drive across town felt agonizingly slow. My foot tapped a restless rhythm against the floorboard of the car. When we finally pulled into his neighborhood, I checked the time on my phone. It was exactly 7:45 p.m. I was running a bit later than I originally planned, but the timing did not matter. He had no clue I was coming over anyway.
The driver pulled up to the curb. I handed him the cash, thanked him, and pushed the car door open. The crisp evening air hit my face as my leather boots crunched against the pavement. I turned around and stared at Trent's house. The porch light cast a warm, welcoming glow over the front steps. My blood hummed in my veins, every nerve ending tingling with electric anticipation.
"Tonight is going to be so much fun," I murmured into the quiet street, a wide smile breaking across my face as I began my walk toward his front porch, blissfully oblivious to whatever waited for me on the other side of that wooden door.
