The Men's Lavatory
Pale and panicked, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs, Clara bolted. She tore away from the advancing group of malicious girls before they could lay their manicured claws on her. Her vision blurred. The heavy bass of the bar pounded in her ears, vibrating through her chest as she stumbled blindly through the packed crowd. Flashes of neon light streaked across her eyes. She was desperate for an escape route, dodging past sweaty bodies and spilled drinks, her head spinning from the liquor that messed with her sense of direction.
Spotting a heavy wooden door marked with the letters 'QB', she threw her weight against it and barged inside, seeking immediate refuge from the impending confrontation.
"What the f*ck!" a startled male voice cursed into the echoing space.
Stunned and disoriented by the sudden quiet, Clara blinked away the dizziness. Her stomach dropped like a stone. She had blindly rushed straight into the men's lavatory. Two men occupied the tiled room. One stood near the marble sinks, calmly taking a drag from a cigarette. The other stood at the urinals, in the middle of using the facility. He scrambled backward, nearly peeing his pants in shock at her sudden intrusion, eyes wide in disbelief.
Heat flooded Clara's pale cheeks. "I—I went the wrong way!" she stammered, pivoting toward the exit.
Before her trembling fingers could grab the metal handle, Bianca’s shrill, aggressive voice echoed ominously from the hallway outside.
"Where did she run off to? Where is she?"
"I saw her run over here. Where did she disappear to?" another girl chimed in.
"She must be in the toilet! Go! Find her!"
Panic seized Clara's throat. The heavy clicking of their stilettos grew closer by the second, a menacing countdown to her public humiliation. She turned pleading eyes toward the two strangers. She vaguely registered that the smoker possessed a commanding, overwhelming aura of authority. He stood tall, bathed in the dim overhead light, exuding a dangerous calm.
"Misters," she whispered, her voice cracking. "May I hide here for a while?"
It was a desperate request, but she had no other choice. She could not face Bianca and her gang in this vulnerable state.
The man with the cigarette, Caleb Sinclair, remained expressionless. His cold gaze shifted to his terrified companion, who was hurriedly zipping up his pants and avoiding Clara's eyes.
"Get out," Caleb ordered. The single look he shot the man was cold and commanding, leaving no room for argument.
The companion darted out the door as if his life depended on it, leaving Clara alone with the intimidating smoker.
The tension in the cramped space thickened, suffocating and heavy. At that exact moment, the sheer amount of alcohol in Clara's system caught up to her. Her dizzy, trembling legs gave out, refusing to support her weight a second longer. She pitched forward, bracing herself for a painful impact against the hard tile floor. She squeezed her eyes shut, surrendering to gravity.
Instead of hitting the ground, a powerful, impeccably tailored arm shot out. The man scooped her up, securing her against a firm chest. The sudden movement made her head spin faster, and she slid helplessly deeper into his embrace, her senses overwhelmed by the scent of clean tobacco and expensive cologne.
Caleb tossed his cigarette into the sink and held her up. He looked down at her heavily intoxicated, flushed state. A slight frown formed on his handsome face.
"Clara Vance," his low, resonant voice echoed in the quiet restroom. "Just how much did you drink?"
Profoundly confused by this handsome stranger uttering her full name, Clara squinted up at him, her vision swaying. She slurred her words, struggling to focus on his striking features. "Do you know me?"
His deep eyes betrayed no emotion. Then, his thin, perfectly shaped lips curled upward into a subtle, mysterious smile.
"No, I don't."
Recognizing she was in no state to walk, Caleb effortlessly adjusted his grip. He carried the half-conscious Clara out of the restroom, bypassing the chaos of the dance floor, and headed directly out into the cool night air. A luxurious car waited silently by the curb.
He placed her onto the soft leather of the backseat and slid in beside her.
His driver glanced in the rearview mirror. "Where are we heading, Mr. Sinclair?"
"Sinclair Mansion."
"Yes, Mr. Sinclair."
The sleek vehicle glided away from the curb, merging into the silent avenue. Inside the quiet interior, Clara remained groggy. Her mind was a hazy mess, laced with the faint, throbbing pain of a looming hangover. She pressed her heavy head against the cool glass of the window, finding brief comfort in the chill. She was oblivious to the powerful, dangerous man sitting silently beside her in the dark. When drunk, she never made a fuss; she just retreated into herself.
Suddenly, the oppressive quiet shattered. The aggressive buzzing of Clara's phone vibrated from within her handbag, startling her.
She furrowed her brow, blindly rummaging through the bag until her fingers brushed the cold metal of the device. Staring at the glowing screen, she answered the call.
"Hello?"
"Clara Vance, I heard from Bianca that you left the Rosewood Hotel with a man."
It was Elias Thorne. His heavy, accusatory tone grated on her frayed nerves, slicing through her alcohol-induced haze.
She peeled her eyes open, her gaze glowing with a misty sheen in the dim light of the passing streetlamps. "What is it? Did she snitch on you?"
Elias adopted a disgustingly righteous tone. "I know I let you down today, but you shouldn't defile yourself because of this. What kind of place do you think a bar is? How could you just—"
Impatient and repulsed by his blatant hypocrisy, Clara sharply cut him off. "What is your point?"
"Where are you now? I will send someone to pick you up."
"Did Lila allow you to make this call?" she mocked, her voice cold.
Elias instantly flared up, rushing to defend his new pregnant lover. "Lila isn't as bad as you think she is. She genuinely thinks of you as a real sister. If anything happened to you, she would be worried sick about your well-being."
Clara let out a harsh, incredulous snort of laughter. The sheer audacity of the man was staggering. He was blind to the monster he was protecting.
"Then I bet she did not tell you that she called me just half an hour ago," Clara said, her voice dripping with venom. "She called specifically to brag about stealing my boyfriend. She weaponized the child in her belly just to prove her ultimate victory!"
Elias snapped without missing a beat. "That is impossible!"
Clara laughed again, a bitter sound that echoed off the car windows. She was exposing his willful ignorance, yet he chose to remain deaf to the truth.
Elias took a deep breath, his tone growing increasingly impatient and condescending. "Clara, what exactly do you want? Lila has never said a bad word about you. She asked me to call you because she was worried, and yet you maliciously bully her. You are selfish. I admit we made a mistake, but are you flawless?"
He did not stop, his voice rising in fierce accusation. "You constantly take advantage of your better family background to bully her. Every time I ask you to accompany me to a social gathering, you make up excuses. I told you to shut down your store, but you gave me some garbage excuse about all jobs being equal!"
The words hung in the air before he finally revealed his true, pathetic colors.
"Clara, I am someone with status! I care deeply about my reputation. I simply could not let people know my long-term girlfriend was running a business selling sex products!"
Trembling with an explosive mixture of anger and profound betrayal, Clara gripped the phone tight. Her eyes turned a furious, tearful red. The sting of his words pierced deeper than any physical blow.
She had bullied Lila? She had disgraced him by selling sex products? Was that what this coward truly believed after all their years together?
A low, chilling laugh slipped past her lips at the suffocating irony of his shameless accusations. It was hilarious in the most painful way imaginable.
"So that is what you thought!" she said, loudly validating his twisted perspective. She sarcastically praised his thought process. "That is great. I see it now. Remember every single word you said today, Elias. I swear to you, I will never forgive you."
Her voice dropped to a dangerous, vengeful whisper, carrying the weight of a solemn vow. "Sooner or later, I will make you deeply regret everything you have done."
Without waiting for his pathetic response, she hit the end button.
The screen went black. She tossed the phone back into her bag, severing the connection and plunging the luxurious car back into a strange, tense silence.
