Calla’s POV

The heavy boot connects with my ribs, driving a sharp, breathless gasp from my lungs. Another kick slams into my shoulder, then another against my lower back. Pain blooms across my skin in hot, stinging waves. I ignore the agony, curling my spine inward and tucking my chin down. I mold my battered body into a tight, impenetrable shell around the whimpering five-year-old girl. I press her slight frame flush against the wet, greasy stones of the scullery floor, using every inch of my own flesh to shield her fragile bones from the onslaught.

Dull thuds echo through the muggy air as the scullery slaves and kitchen workers unleash their fury. They kick and punch without an ounce of mercy. They jeer and spit vile curses, punishing me for daring to ruin their twisted entertainment. Through the deafening chaos, I hear the child’s ragged, uneven breaths. She trembles like a leaf in a storm, pressing her soot-streaked face deep into the hollow of my neck. Every time a fist collides with my back, her tiny body shudders against my chest. To these cruel workers, she is just prey. She is a nobody, a faceless victim they can break without consequence.

They are wrong. I will not let them break her.

"Pathetic," a harsh, mocking voice slices through the clamor of the mob.

The Head Slave stands tall above the fray, looking down his nose at our huddled forms. He sneers, his face twisted in pure disgust. He pulls his leg back and drives the hard toe of his boot directly into my exposed side. A sharp grunt rips past my lips.

"You must truly love misery," the Head Slave snarls, spitting onto the filthy tile inches from my face. "Trying to protect a petty thief when you couldn’t even save yourself. Look at you. You couldn't keep yourself from becoming the lowest criminal slave in the pack, and now you want to play hero?"

His words dig into my chest, but the fire of indignation burns hotter than my bruised flesh. I tighten my grip on the trembling girl. I refuse to let his cruelty stand. I twist my aching shoulder, ignoring the sharp protest of my muscles, and crane my neck to glare fiercely up at him.

"Even a criminal knows when you’re doing something wrong!" I shout back, my voice raw and echoing over the noise of the kitchen. "She’s just a child!"

The Head Slave’s face flushes a dark, ugly red at my sudden defiance. His eyes narrow into furious slits. "What the fuck do you know, slave?" he hisses. He pulls his massive fist back, aiming a devastating blow right for my temple.

I clench my jaw and squeeze my eyes shut. I brace my neck for the crushing impact, knowing tomorrow I will be covered head to toe in dark, purple bruises.

The heavy strike never lands.

The chaotic storm of kicks and curses screeches to a sudden, jarring halt. The oppressive noise of the mob vanishes, replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence that rings in my ears. Warily, I crack one eye open and peer over my aching shoulder.

The crowd of kitchen workers parts like the sea. They step back in a hurried shuffle, dropping their fists and bowing their heads in immediate, fearful reverence. Sloane glides into the humid, grease-stained scullery. She radiates a sickening arrogance, moving with the grace of a predator. She still wears the beautiful, elaborate ceremonial wedding dress from the reception. The sheer contrast between her expensive, pristine silk and the filthy stones beneath my knees makes my stomach turn.

Sloane doesn’t spare a single glance for the bowing workers. Her triumphant, cold eyes are locked straight onto me. She stares down at me groveling in the dirt, her gaze dripping with venom.

"I should have known you’d be at the center of this mess," she says, her voice smooth and laced with poison.

She steps closer, the hem of her perfect dress brushing against the wet floor. A twisted, sadistic smile spreads across her face. She finds joy in my degradation. She gestures lazily to the Head Slave, her tone casual but her intent lethal.

"Whip this disobedient slave," Sloane commands, her thin smile growing wider. "And run the thieving child off the property."

My blood runs cold. I want to launch myself off the floor and drag my dirty nails down her smug face. I glare up at her, holding the little girl even tighter against my chest, ready to take the lash if it means keeping the child safe. Sloane catches my furious look and merely smirks. She flips her perfectly styled hair over one shoulder, enjoying the sight of my helpless rage.

Before the guards can step forward to execute her cruel and bloody orders, the heavy wooden doors of the kitchen fly open with a loud bang.

A panicked servant sprints into the room, his boots skidding wildly on the wet stones. He rushes straight toward the Luna, bowing so deeply he nearly folds in half. He gasps for air, his face pale with sheer terror.

"Luna!" the servant announces breathlessly. "Alpha Vaughn's young daughter has gone missing from the reception!"

Sloane’s sadistic smile vanishes in a fraction of a second. She freezes, her eyes widening in sudden realization. A string of hushed, furious curses escapes her lips. Even isolated down here in the kitchen dirt, I know the massive weight of that name. Upsetting the region's most powerful Alpha on her wedding day is a political disaster. The pack simply cannot afford his wrath.

"Damn it," Sloane hisses under her breath, the panic bleeding into her composed facade. She turns her back on me and claps her hands together with a sharp, echoing crack. "Get back to your work! We need to find that child right now." She shoots one last disdainful glance at the corner where I kneel. "Everything else can wait until tonight."

She gathers the expensive skirts of her dress and hurries out of the kitchen in a flurry of panic and silk, desperate to appease Alpha Vaughn. The scullery workers scatter instantly. They rush back to the sinks and chopping blocks, terrified of being caught in the political crossfire.

The Head Slave lingers for just a second longer. He leans down, his face hovering inches from mine. His eyes hold a cruel excitement.

"Tonight," he hisses, a dark, parting warning slipping from his lips. "You’ll get what you deserve."

He turns on his heel and strides off, eager to join the search party. The remaining workers slowly filter out of this section of the kitchen, taking their prep work elsewhere to avoid the Luna's incoming wrath. Within moments, the damp, echoing space is left empty.

I am left alone on the slippery stones. The sudden silence is almost as jarring as the noise of the beating. Slowly, cautiously, I loosen my iron grip. I unwind my trembling arms from around the little girl.

She is a tiny slip of a thing, so delicate I fear she might break. Her dark hair is matted with soot and dust. Her breathing comes in rapid, terrified huffs, her small chest rising and falling in erratic spasms. She is terribly pale, her wide eyes staring blankly ahead in pure shock. Red, angry marks are already beginning to bloom into dark bruises on her thin arms where the slaves managed to land their boots before I shielded her.

I shift my bruised body, ignoring the sharp sting in my ribs, and kneel squarely in front of her. I force the pain from my expression, keeping my features calm and pleasant.

"Breathe, sweetheart," I murmur softly. My voice is scratchy from the smoke, but I keep it as gentle as possible. "You’re safe now."

I reach out, lightly trailing my fingertips down her small, trembling arms. I stroke her skin with feather-light touches, trying to ground her back in reality. She shudders under my hands, the trauma of the violent assault still gripping her small heart.

I stare into that tiny face, willing my own heartbeat to slow so hers might follow. 'Whatever strength I have left, let it flow to her,' I pray silently. I just want her to find some measure of security in my embrace.

Her wide, dark eyes slowly drift up to meet mine. She doesn't look away. I maintain a soft, reassuring smile, moving my hands to rub smooth, rhythmic circles on her small shoulders and back. Minute by minute, the rapid heaving of her chest begins to ease. The wild panic in her eyes fades, replaced by a cautious, quiet curiosity. She blinks, the tear tracks on her dirt-smeared cheeks catching the dim kitchen light.

Then, a shy, immensely sweet smile creeps over her tiny, tear-streaked features.

She lifts her small hands. She reaches out toward me, her short fingers stretching out. I stay perfectly still, letting her bridge the gap. She gently presses her small palm against my battered, bruised cheek. The warmth of her touch is a stark contrast to the cold dampness of the floor.

"Mommy," she says softly.

The single word hits me harder than any of the slaves' heavy kicks. My heart shatters into a million jagged pieces and mends right back together in the same breath. A raw, ragged breath escapes my lips. Hot, unbidden tears spring to my eyes, burning my vision.

I pull her forward and hug her tight against my chest. I bury my weeping face into her small shoulder so she won't see me cry. She wraps her little arms around my neck and hugs me back just as fiercely. For a singular, suspended moment, the damp walls, the cruelty of the pack, the impending punishment—it all fades away. It is just the two of us.

I know I am not her biological mother. I know this illusion will end. But I had briefly been a mother once. I had known that instinct, that overwhelming, primal need to protect a life smaller than my own. This tiny, genuine embrace makes every agonizing kick, every purple bruise, every moment of suffering today completely worth the price.

The tender, quiet moment is violently shattered.

"Who gave you permission to touch her?"

The icy, deeply commanding bark echoes through the cavernous room. The voice is a weapon, laced with a terrifying, Alpha-level intimidation that freezes the blood in my veins. It rattles the iron pots hanging from the ceiling and demands instant submission.

I whirl around in sheer terror.

A massive, muscular Alpha towers over us in the shadows of the scullery entrance. He is imposing, radiating a dark, suffocating power that makes the air thick and heavy. He is even broader than Corbin, casting a massive shadow over our huddled forms.

Blind panic spikes in my chest. I don't know this massive stranger. If he lays a hand on this delicate child, he will break her in two. Without thinking, I throw my arms back around the little girl, shielding her body with my own for the second time today.

"Don’t hurt her!" I cry out, my voice cracking with desperation.

But my fear immediately fades into sheer shock. The little girl doesn't cower. Instead, she wiggles in my grasp and enthusiastically reaches her arms out toward the towering, angry man.

The Alpha steps forward, his heavy boots echoing like gunshots against the tile. He reaches down and yanks the girl from my protective arms with effortless ease. He hoists her safely high into the air, settling her against his broad chest. The girl immediately rests her head on his shoulder, looking perfectly content and secure.

I stare up at them, my mind racing to catch up.

My knees ache as I slowly, awkwardly stand up from the floor. The sharp pains in my ribs flare, reminding me of the beating I just took. Standing at my full height, I barely come up to the Alpha's shoulder. His presence is suffocating.

Suddenly, I become hyper-aware of my appearance. I am wearing torn, filthy slave clothing soaked in dishwater and grease. My hair is a tangled mess. My hands are coated in dirt and grime.

The Alpha's intense, lethal stare drops from my face and tracks down my arm. His eyes lock dead onto the dark, ugly, puckered scar on my wrist—the permanent slave brand seared into my flesh.

A wave of burning shame washes over me. I quickly snap my arms behind my back, hiding the brand in the folds of my ragged, wet skirt. I drop my gaze to my bare, dirt-covered feet, unable to meet his burning glare.

"The others were trying to hurt her," I stammer, desperately trying to explain the situation before he jumps to conclusions. "I had to sav—"

"Save my daughter?" the man scoffs.

His voice rises from a dangerous growl into a furious, booming shout that rattles the pans on the nearby racks. The raw power in his tone forces me to take a half-step back. He looks down at me with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"Saved by you? A slave?" He gestures sharply to the little girl in his arms. "She’s covered in bruises and filth and… and tear stains!"

I clamp my jaw shut and stare stubbornly at the cracked stone floor. I brace my aching body, tightening my muscles for the inevitable physical blows. It makes perfect sense. This is a complete misunderstanding, but it is entirely typical of an Alpha. They always arrive after the real tormentors have fled, take one look at the scene, and lay the blame squarely on the lowest ranking victim in the room. I am a branded criminal in his eyes. He thinks I am the monster who caused his child's pain.

I squeeze my eyes shut and wait for the strike. A few more bruises are a small price to pay. I saved her. That is what matters.

Seconds tick by. The kitchen is dead silent, save for the dripping of the heavy faucets. The heavy, bone-crushing strike never comes.

Surprised by the stillness, I cautiously open my eyes and peek upward through my lashes.

The little girl is squirming. She is anxiously tugging at the imposing Alpha's expensive suit sleeve. She reaches up with her small, dirty hands and physically turns his angry, shadowed face toward hers. She shakes her head vigorously, her dark hair flying around her face. Then, she points a small finger frantically down at me. She babbles a series of urgent, wordless noises, trying with all her might to defend me.

The Alpha's hard features soften just a fraction as he looks at his daughter. "What is it?" he asks, though his tone remains tight and strained.

The girl huffs, frustrated by his lack of understanding. She points at me again, then taps her own chest, shaking her head side to side to say I wasn't the bad guy.

But the Alpha's patience is clearly spent. The panic of losing her, combined with the sight of a branded slave in the filthy underbelly of the packhouse, has pushed him to his absolute limit. He lets out a long, weary sigh, squeezing his daughter securely against his chest. He buries his face in her hair for a split second, grounding himself in the fact that she is safe.

Then, he turns his dark eyes back to me.

The brief softness vanishes. He looks down his nose at me with a lethal, chilling intent. The sheer force of his glare pins me to the floor.

"Don’t even think about hurting my daughter," he warns.

His voice plunges into a freezing, terrifying chill. It isn't a shout anymore; it is a quiet, steady promise of violence that makes my blood run cold.

"Or I’ll tear you to pieces."

He doesn't wait for my response. He delivers one final, piercing glare that strips away whatever dignity I have left, before turning sharply on his heel. He walks away into the darkness of the corridor, carrying the little girl with him, his heavy footsteps echoing long after he disappears from sight.
