Unmasking the Assistant

Clara hobbled out of the sterile hospital doors, every step sending a jolt of sharp pain through her battered legs. The night air was biting and cold, but it did nothing to cool the simmering rage boiling beneath her skin. In her right hand, she clutched the heavy gold card Dominic had thrown at her. Its smooth, metallic edges dug into her palm, burning a metaphorical hole in her pocket. It felt like a physical anchor, a disgusting reminder of his suffocating hypocrisy and the three agonizing years she had wasted on him.

Spotting a ragged beggar sitting on the dimly lit street corner, she altered her path. The unkempt man was huddled against the chill, his dirty clothes offering little protection against the wind. A rusted tin cup sat empty between his worn-out shoes. Clara walked over, pausing just a few feet away. Without a single ounce of hesitation, she tossed the precious gold card directly into his dirty lap. The heavy plastic clattered loudly against the pavement before settling onto his frayed trousers.

The beggar jumped, startled by the sudden movement. He picked up the shimmering card, his grime-covered fingers trembling as he stared at the premium bank logo in sheer disbelief. He looked up at Clara, his mouth hanging open, expecting her to snatch it back and laugh at him.

Clara turned her back to the harsh hospital lights and told him flatly, “There’s no password or withdrawal limit to this card. Take as much money as you like!”

She stood rooted to the spot, watching as the man scrambled eagerly to his feet. He shoved the card into his jacket, abandoning his tin cup, and rushed frantically down the block toward the glowing neon sign of the nearest ATM. Seeing his desperate sprint, Clara exhaled a long, deep breath. The suffocating, heavy anger lodged tight in her chest finally began to dissipate, replaced by a fleeting sense of victory.

*You wanted to act like a grand, generous gentleman, right, Thorne?* she thought bitterly to herself, a cold smile touching her lips. *I’ll let you act to your heart’s content!*

In a drastically better mood, she hailed a passing cab and directed the driver to take her home, finally allowing her exhausted body to sink into the worn leather backseat.

However, the satisfaction of her petty revenge was short-lived. The very next morning brought a fresh, relentless wave of agony. Her bruised muscles had stiffened significantly overnight, making every small movement a monumental battle. She sat on the edge of her mattress, staring at her bandaged limbs, and picked up her phone to formally request a day of medical leave.

Tristan answered on the second ring. Instead of offering a standard ounce of professional sympathy for her accident, his harsh, deeply sarcastic voice bit viciously through the line, vibrating against her ear.

“Clara Vance, just because I graciously let you off early yesterday, do you honestly think you can get away from slacking off?” he demanded, the irritation in his tone palpable. “I don’t care if you have to crawl on your hands and knees to bring yourself to work! You get your ass into this office right now!”

The line went dead with a sharp click. Clara lowered the phone, swallowing her massive frustration at her wildly moody boss. He was impossible to please, a walking contradiction who demanded absolute perfection from his staff. Taking a steadying breath to brace herself against the throbbing pain, she dragged her heavily battered body into some presentable office clothes and began the torturous commute to work.

The Vanguard office was a bustling hub of morning activity. Phones rang constantly, and junior executives rushed down the sleek, modern corridors. Clara ignored the curious stares of her coworkers as she slowly pushed open the heavy frosted glass door to the president's private suite.

Tristan was lounging casually in his plush leather executive chair, spinning a silver pen between his fingers. He paused, momentarily stunned to see her genuinely limping through the doorway, wrapped in stark white medical bandages. For a split second, a flicker of surprise crossed his handsome features before his usual arrogant scowl returned.

“Are you truly hurt, or did you meticulously wrap yourself up in these bandages just to fool me?” he demanded bossily, his tone steeped in deep skepticism. He leaned forward, resting his elbows on the polished mahogany desk. “Come over here right now and let me check!”

With her head bowed in practiced, absolute respect, Clara shuffled forward slowly. Every step shot a dull ache up her leg, but she maintained her silent, submissive posture. As soon as she was within arm's reach, Tristan aggressively grabbed her slim arm. He ignored her quiet gasp and took it upon himself to undo the pristine bandages, his long fingers swift and impatient.

As the white gauze fell away, the harsh, raw scratches and purpling bruises marring her pale skin were laid bare under the bright fluorescent office lights. The ugly purple and yellow marks were a stark contrast against her fair complexion. He stared at the battered flesh, finally believing her story. He dropped her wrist, muttering loudly about her acting like a chaotic, loose cannon since she had returned to the city.

“I didn’t want this to happen either,” she murmured defensively, rubbing her exposed wrist. Her gaze remained fixed firmly on the polished floor tiles, refusing to meet his probing stare.

Standing so intimately close to her, Tristan suddenly caught the pleasant, subtle scent radiating from her skin. It was light, resembling a mix of fresh jasmine and clean rain, a sharp contrast to the heavy, overpowering perfumes the other corporate women wore. For the first time since she had been hired, he truly noticed the fine details of the woman standing before him. His eyes drifted down to her long, delicate white fingers resting by her side, and then traced the elegant, graceful slope of her neck exposed by her lowered head.

He had never once spared a second glance at the nerdy, heavily bookish assistant that Caleb Brooks had forcefully shoved upon him. She always wore those hideous, thick-rimmed glasses and shapeless suits that hid her figure. But now, studying the delicate line of her collarbone, a sudden, inexplicable intrigue firmly took hold of his senses.

It infuriated him to his core. He was Tristan Hayes. Women threw themselves at his feet daily, hanging onto his every word with desperate, clinging adoration. Yet this unassuming woman, from the very first day she walked into Vanguard, had never once looked at him with anything other than cold, distant professionalism.

“Lift your head!” he ordered suddenly, his tone shifting into a mean, authoritative growl that echoed in the quiet office.

Clara did not flinch. She kept her chin tucked down and replied in a soft, meek voice, “President Hayes, please tell me exactly what you would like me to do!”

That passive defiance made Tristan snap. He lost his notoriously short temper. Reaching out, he roughly grabbed her chin with his large, warm hand. His grip was tight, unyielding as he forcefully tilted her face up, demanding she meet his gaze.

Instead of the dull, forgettable assistant he fully expected to sneer at, he was instantly struck by a pair of remarkably gorgeous, breathtakingly shining eyes. They were deep, expressive, and swirling with a quiet, resilient strength that knocked the breath right out of his lungs.

Without a single second of rational thought, Tristan yanked the thick, hideous glasses directly from her face. The heavy frames clattered loudly onto his desk.

Stripped of her disguise, her true appearance was finally laid bare. Her flawless, delicate skin glowed warmly in the natural light pouring from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Her stunningly well-defined features—the straight slope of her nose, the soft, inviting curve of her lips—captivated him on the spot. The ugly glasses had been hiding an absolute masterpiece right under his nose.

“Screw you, Caleb Brooks! You’re going to get a massive earful from me about hiding this,” Tristan cursed under his breath, utterly mesmerized by the captivating woman trapped in his grip.

Deeply confused by his sudden, intense anger and fighting the sharp pain in her bruised jaw from his tight grip, Clara frowned. His strong fingers were digging into her delicate skin. She spoke firmly, breaking the heavy tension in the room. “President Hayes, can you please let go of me?”

Tristan’s dark gaze dropped from her shining eyes down to her soft lips. A dark, predatory smirk played on the corners of his mouth. “You want me to let go? Sure, no problem,” he replied, his voice dropping to a low, husky register. “But you have to promise me something first. Let me kiss you first!”

With those shockingly bold words, he aggressively leaned in to claim her lips.
