The Emerald Token

Garrick laughed heartily, the deep sound filling the small, herb-scented cottage and chasing away the winter chill. He waved a calloused hand at Isolde's persistent curiosity. "Snowy days are for listening to the snow fall, sunny days for soaking up the sun," he chuckled, his weathered face softening with genuine affection. "And now I have you to teach—passing on my complex medical craft and lethal combat skills. That will keep my hands full enough." He leaned back on his stool, grinning broadly. "I am content to spend my remaining days in quiet peace. Let the foolish men of the city worry over life, death, and gold."

Isolde's heart swelled with a profound warmth she hadn't felt in two lifetimes. She looked at the gruff healer, the stark contrast between his simple kindness and the cold, transactional affection of the Lockhart family settling deep in her bones. She was done endlessly chasing their approval, done bleeding herself dry for people who would gladly toss her to the wolves. She met Garrick's eyes. "From this moment on, you are my only true family. I will take care of you."

Deeply touched by her earnest devotion, the old man reached out and gently patted her head. "There's a good girl."

As heavy dusk began to drape over the snow-covered city, Isolde gathered her bundled herbs. She pulled her plain cloak tight against the biting wind and headed toward the imposing iron gates of the Viceroy's estate. She remained unaware of the shadow trailing silently behind her; Garrick protectively tracked her through the darkening alleys to ensure her safe passage.

Arriving back at the grand estate in her simple, rough-spun attire, Isolde barely took a step past the towering stone pillars before a hostile welcoming committee blocked her path. Her supposedly devoted betrothed, Fabian, and her brother, Sylvan, stood waiting on the frost-covered steps.

"Where have you been, dressed in such plain, wretched clothing?" Sylvan snapped instantly. His face flushed with embarrassment as his eyes raked over her inappropriate attire. His panic was evident, and Isolde quickly saw why. Just a few paces away, Prince Cassian Wyndham sat composed and silent in an ornate wheelchair.

Fabian's eyes flashed with arrogant scorn. He stepped forward aggressively, his posture rigid. "You lack all sense of propriety! Bow and apologize to His Highness for your offensive appearance immediately!"

Isolde bit back a sharp, knowing smile. She saw right through their feigned concern for royal etiquette. Their boiling anger stemmed directly from her flawlessly eclipsing Cecily at the recognition feast earlier. She had deeply wounded their fragile male egos, and now they sought any excuse to tear her down. Choosing to ignore their petty vanity, Isolde stepped forward. She executed a perfect, graceful curtsy to the silent man in the chair. "Your Highness."

Sylvan frantically rushed forward, waving his hands in a clumsy attempt to intervene. "Your Highness, please forgive my sister's severe lack of manners. As her brother, I apologize on her behalf—"

Cassian effortlessly ignored Sylvan's existence. The prince's deep, penetrating gaze rested solely on Isolde. He leaned forward slightly, his voice holding a soft, unexpected warmth that startled both Fabian and Sylvan. The two men stood frozen, having always firmly believed the persistent rumors that the crippled prince shunned all women.

"Where were you this afternoon, Lady Isolde?" Cassian asked directly, his tone steady.

Clutching her wrapped bundle of medicinal herbs tightly to her chest, Isolde met his intense gaze. "A chill sent me out to fetch medicine for my ailments," she explained calmly. "It is an unusual surprise to accidentally cross paths with Your Highness twice in one single day."

Looking down at his dignified figure, chilling, horrific memories of her past life surfaced in her mind. She vividly remembered how the delicate, 'innocent' Cecily had secretly carried Fabian’s illegitimate child. The other woman had ruthlessly plotted to force Isolde into marrying the crippled, supposedly barren prince to secure her own future. That dark conspiracy ultimately culminated in a staged kidnapping. Her own flesh and blood, along with Fabian, had callously left her to bleed out and die in the freezing snow.

But looking at Cassian right now, breathing and real, clarity washed over her. His quiet grace far outshone Fabian's false, treacherous heart. A life bound to this enigmatic prince would have been infinitely better than one chained to her traitorous betrothed.

Cassian held her gaze, his expression unreadable but intense. He methodically studied every line of her face, mapping her features in the fading light. "Meeting twice in one day is no mere chance," he noted softly.

Without breaking eye contact, he deliberately drew a smooth, glowing green gemstone from his deep sleeve. With a casual flick of his wrist, he tossed it directly to her.

Startled by the sudden movement, Isolde fumbled but caught the stone. She immediately noticed its strange, comforting warmth seeping into her frozen palms. The magical heat chased away the biting evening chill, spreading a soothing energy up her arms.

"My thanks, Your Highness," she said softly, holding the priceless token close to her chest.

Without uttering another word to the stunned onlookers, Cassian smoothly turned his heavy wheelchair. The metal wheels scraped softly against the frost-covered stone as he glided silently away, vanishing into the encroaching shadows of the sprawling estate.

Isolde stood motionless, watching his retreating figure while her thoughts tangled with a strange, newfound hope. What did this mean?

"Why are you just standing there?" Fabian's sharp, irritated voice cut through her quiet reverie. Jealousy laced his harsh tone as he stepped aggressively into her space. "Go inside and change out of those filthy rags. You may be the viceroy's daughter, but you look like a beggar!"

He pointed a shaking finger at the warm green stone in her hands, his bruised pride twisting his handsome features into an ugly sneer. "Do you really think that random trinket makes you his treasured favorite?"

Isolde faced him, her brow faintly furrowed as she observed the toxic insecurity flashing in his eyes. He hated the idea of another powerful man favoring the woman he planned to discard.

He falters before scoffing again. 'It's a crumb for a stray. If he cares for anyone, it's Cecily—not you, you wretched thing.'
