The Takeout Burn

Vera tightened her grip around the thin hospital blanket. The sheer malice radiating from the younger woman standing over her bed left her horrified to her core. Sloane’s cruel revelation about Desmond demanding a divorce echoed off the sterile walls, shattering the delicate illusion of peace Vera had desperately clung to. A harsh, rattling cough tore through Vera’s throat, shaking her frail frame until her bones ached. She reached a trembling, bony hand toward the smirking intruder.

"Leave her alone, Sloane," Vera pleaded, her voice breaking into a fragile, desperate wheeze. "Spare my Tessa… I beg you…"

Sloane sneered, taking a deliberate step closer. Venomous hatred flashed in her eyes, erasing any trace of the sickly, dizzy woman Desmond had coddled just moments prior. "Never!" Her high-pitched voice cut through the heavy air like a jagged blade. "Stop making excuses! She never should have married Desmond!"

"Sloane… No one had a choice," Vera gasped, clutching her chest as another wave of pain hit her. "I tried to fight back against your grandmama, but…"

"Enough!" Sloane spat, leaning over the bed with a triumphant glare. "Desmond could have married anyone else, but not her! Your daughter is just as despicable and shameless as you are!"

The barrage of poisonous words hit Vera like physical blows. Her fragile body gave out under the weight of the stress. A deep, wet rattle erupted from her chest, and she coughed up a massive amount of dark blood. The crimson fluid splattered across the stark white sheets and coated her own pale hands. Vera swayed, losing whatever little strength remained in her limbs, and collapsed from her hospital bed onto the cold tile floor with a sickening thud.

At that exact moment, the ward door swung open. Tessa stepped inside, holding heavy plastic bags filled with the piping-hot anniversary takeout she had rushed to buy. Her gaze swept the room and landed on the horrifying scene of her mother crumpled on the floor, choking on her own blood. Her eyes turned bloodshot in an instant. She dropped the food. The heavy containers hit the floor with a loud crash, bursting open and spilling steaming hot soup, meat, and dark sauce across the tiles. The smell of sterile alcohol clashed violently with the rich, savory aroma of the ruined dinner.

"Sloane Mercer! What are you doing?!" Tessa screamed, her voice tearing at the seams.

Hearing her beloved daughter’s voice, Vera wept openly. Her heart broke all over again, consumed by the agonizing secret that Desmond had so cruelly demanded a divorce while Tessa suffered in silence.

"Tessa… My poor girl…" Vera sobbed, thick blood staining her teeth. "Why didn't you tell me?"

"It’s okay," Tessa cried hysterically. She dropped to her knees, heedless of the steaming mess soaking into her clothes, and desperately wiped the thick, warm blood from Vera’s pale mouth with her bare hands. "As long as you don't leave me, I'll be okay."

Sloane watched them with cold, calculated precision. The spilled takeout was still steaming heavily, sending tendrils of intense heat into the chilly hospital air. An incredibly ruthless, psychotic ploy formed in her mind. She dropped her arrogant smirk and executed her plan without a second of hesitation.

Sloane intentionally threw herself forcefully to the floor. She aimed her body toward the mess Tessa had just dropped, deliberately crashing her forehead directly into the puddle of spilled, piping-hot takeout food. The searing liquid scalded her skin upon impact, turning her flesh an angry red.

A piercing, ear-splitting scream ripped from Sloane’s throat. She writhed on the floor in fake, exaggerated agony, clutching the edges of her face while making sure not to touch the actual burn. "Desmond! Desmond, save me! It burns!" she screamed at the top of her lungs.

Shocked by the sheer, unhinged malice of the self-inflicted burn, Vera's eyes widened in terror. The shock triggered another fierce spasm in her chest, and she coughed up another mouthful of blood, painting Tessa’s hands crimson.

"Mom, hold on!" Tessa sobbed, desperate to lift her heavy, unconscious mother off the floor. She hooked her arms under Vera’s armpits, straining her muscles, praying that the rapidly approaching footsteps thundering down the hall would offer help.

Desmond rushed through the doorway. Tessa looked up, desperation swimming in her tear-filled eyes, expecting him to help her lift her dying mother. Instead, she was forced to watch in agonizing slow motion as Desmond ignored his mother-in-law dying on the floor. His gaze locked onto the screaming Sloane. He dropped to one knee, frantic, and gathered the shrieking woman into his arms, inspecting the blisters forming on her forehead.

"Desmond, it hurts so much!" Sloane wailed, burying her face into his chest.

He looked up, his face twisted in rage. "Tessa, you've gone mad!" he growled viciously at his wife.

Without another glance at Vera, Desmond turned his back and carried Sloane out of the room. His cruel words felt like a jagged knife twisting deep into Tessa’s bleeding heart.

Just as despair threatened to swallow Tessa whole, a pair of strong, capable arms swept into her line of sight. Dr. Nolan Pierce stepped into the chaotic ward. He didn't waste time asking questions. He carefully lifted Vera’s limp body from the cold floor and placed her back onto the bed, expertly arranging pillows to support her head and clear her airway.

Vera let out heavy, agonizing coughs, each one rattling her frail frame. Nolan checked her vitals, then turned and met Tessa’s sorrowful, tear-filled eyes. The sheer grief on her face made his chest tighten, but duty demanded immediate action.

"Go to the nurse’s station and get a nurse. Quickly!" he barked, springing into action and reaching for the oxygen mask.

Tessa scrambled to her feet. She dashed out of the room, running madly down the long hospital corridor. As she neared the station, she collided with a furious Desmond. He was standing by the reception desk, still holding a sobbing Sloane.

"Her face is burnt!" Desmond roared at the terrified staff, his voice echoing down the hall. "Summon elite plastic surgeons immediately to save her face! If the treatment is delayed, I'll sue the hospital!"

Tessa gritted her teeth, ignoring the stinging pain in her shoulder from the collision. She grabbed the nearest nurse. "Doctor Pierce needs the head nurse in my mom’s ward right now! She’s hemorrhaging!"

Recognizing the urgency in Nolan’s name, the nurse nodded sharply and sprinted off to gather the emergency cart. With help secured, Tessa pivoted, ready to sprint back to her mother.

"Tessa, come over and apologize!" Desmond’s unprecedented, booming roar stopped her dead in her tracks. He had never yelled at her with such raw, unbridled fury in all the years they had known each other.

Tessa turned slowly to face his blazing, angry glare. The submissive, gentle wife persona she had maintained for three years vanished into thin air. She forcefully tightened her bloody hands into fists, the metallic scent of her mother’s blood clinging to her skin.

"Mr. Carlisle, your childhood friend deserves everything that happened to her, even if her face is permanently scarred!" she shot back. Her voice shook with raw, unrestrained hatred.

Desmond’s jaw clenched, his eyes narrowing in disgust. "Tessa! Show some heart!"

She ignored his loud demands for basic human decency. She stepped forward, her gaze locking directly onto the weeping Sloane, who was peeking out from Desmond’s embrace with a triumphant glint hidden beneath her tears.

"If you have time to yell at me, Mr. Carlisle, you should spend this time taking her to see a doctor!" Tessa spat the words out like venom. She didn't wait for his response. Tears streamed relentlessly down her face as she turned her back on her husband and his manipulating childhood sweetheart. She rushed back down the hall toward her mother’s ward.

Upon arrival, the scene inside the room was frantic. The head nurse and several assistants had already wheeled in a patient transfer trolley and an array of medical equipment. Nolan stood by the bed, his expression grim and focused. When he saw Tessa, he immediately pointed to the door.

"Stay outside," he ordered firmly, prioritizing the medical team's space to work and save Vera’s life.

Tessa nodded numbly and retreated. Trapped in the cold, unforgiving corridor, she slumped against the stark white wall. The heavy wooden door could not muffle the horrifying, wet sounds of coughing and vomiting from inside. The frantic, high-pitched beeping of heart monitors echoed relentlessly in her mind.

She broke down. Sliding down the wall, she sank to the sterile floor. The sheer terror of facing a life without her mother’s love consumed her mind. She hunkered down, bringing her knees to her chest. She trembled, shaking from head to toe, and tightly covered her ears with her hands to block out the agonizing noise of death.

Minutes dragged into what felt like an eternity. Batches of panicked doctors and large medical machines rushed in and out of the room. The constant flurry of activity only heightened her dread. She pressed her hands harder over her ears, her teeth sinking into her own bottom lip to stifle her sobs. She bit down so hard that the skin broke, but she didn't feel the physical pain.

Finally, the heavy door clicked open, and the frantic pace settled into an ominous silence. Nolan emerged from the ward. He scanned the hallway and found her shivering pathetically by the wall, curled into a tight ball like an ostrich hiding its head in the sand. She was biting her own lips so hard that they were bleeding, thin red streaks tracing down her chin.

His chest ached at the sight of her devastating vulnerability. He walked over and squatted down to her level. Reaching out, he gently, warmly held her shaking shoulders.

"It’s alright now," Nolan said, his voice a steady, calming rumble in the quiet corridor. "Let’s take a look at your mother."

Tessa slowly raised her head. Her red, deeply tear-filled eyes met his gaze. The despair in her expression was raw and unfiltered, a silent plea for hope.

Nolan frowned slightly at the sight of her self-inflicted injury. The fresh blood smeared across her pale skin stood out in stark contrast to her pallor. Slowly, he drew a crisp white handkerchief from the pocket of his doctor’s coat. He leaned in, closing the distance between them, and carefully, tenderly wiped the fresh blood from her bruised lips.

"Everything’s alright," he murmured softly, his thumb brushing against the fine cotton fabric. "Don’t worry."
