The Countdown Begins

The heavy door clicked shut, leaving Nora isolated in the suffocating silence of the ward. Julian’s parting command for a comprehensive security check echoed in her ears. Her trembling legs finally gave way beneath her. She collapsed, her knees hitting the cold hospital floor. The adrenaline from her failed escape and the brutal confrontation drained from her veins, leaving a hollow, aching exhaustion.

Drawing shallow breaths, she dragged her bruised body off the tiles and crawled onto the sterile mattress. Rest was impossible. She reached for her phone, her fingers shaking as she typed 'acute leukemia' into the search bar. The harsh glow of the screen illuminated her pale face as she plunged into the deep, terrifying well of medical literature.

Each clinical description of failing organs and compromised immune systems felt like a knife twisting in her chest. She had to understand the enemy attacking her daughter's body. She braced her fragile frame against the pillows, murmuring silent prayers into the empty room. She just needed the results of her first test from the public hospital to clear tomorrow. Once they confirmed her preliminary match, she could undergo the detailed screening and safely donate her bone marrow to Stella. Memorizing survival rates and aftercare procedures, exhaustion eventually dragged her heavy eyelids shut.

Down the hall, the atmosphere in Leo’s luxurious private ward was thick with dark tension. Julian strode into the room, his expression a thunderous mask of anger.

Daphne hovered near the bed, helping Leo color with oil pastels. "Daddy," Leo greeted, his bright voice slicing through the gloom.

Julian ignored the greeting. He locked his hard gaze on Daphne. "Who allowed him to see her?"

Recognizing the lethal edge in his tone, Daphne swiftly stepped in front of the mattress, using her body to shield the suddenly stiffened, frightened boy. Tears welled in her reddened eyes. "Jules, don't blame Leo. He heard me talking to the nurses. You know how kind-hearted he is."

Julian sat on the edge of the bed, his voice dropping to a deceptive calm. "Leo, how did you know they were at Maplewood Welfare?"

Daphne sobbed, cutting in smoothly to fabricate an alibi. "I took him there for a charity event. After his diagnosis, I wanted to give back. He must have met the twins during one of those visits."

Oblivious to the dangerous undercurrents between the adults, Leo looked past Daphne’s arm. "Daddy, is that pretty lady really Hazel and Stella's mommy?"

Julian smoothed his son’s hair. "Yes."

Leo’s eyes, a mirror image of Julian’s, crinkled with innocent joy. "That's great! Hazel and Stella finally have their own mommy too."

Daphne’s heart sank like a stone. She stared at the beaming boy, a cold dread washing over her. This undeniable blood bond connecting the half-siblings terrified her. He had met Nora once, yet the affinity was instant. She needed to secure her legal position as Mrs. Crawford fast, before the ugly truth surfaced.

Forcing a sickeningly sweet smile, Daphne gently cupped the boy's cheek. "Leo, do you actually like the pretty lady who is donating to save you?"

"Yes!" Leo nodded vigorously. "But I love Mommy the most in the world."

Daphne pinched his cheek, a little too hard. "And here I thought I was raising an ungrateful brat," she muttered under her breath, the envious venom leaking out.

Julian caught the underlying malice. He shot her a freezing, sharp glare.

Panic spiked in Daphne's chest. She forced a bright laugh, frantically pointing at the messy paper on the tray to change the subject. "Leo, what are you drawing?"

Leo held up the crayon stick figures, his small finger pointing to each one in earnest explanation. "This is Daddy, this is Mommy, this is me, and this is my little sister..."

A thick drop of bright red blood splattered violently across the paper.

Before Leo could finish his sweet explanation, a second drop fell. Then a steady, horrifying stream. Blood poured profusely from his nose, painting his chin and the white sheets crimson. The flow was unstoppable.

Panic erupted in the room. Daphne shrieked. She slammed her hand onto the emergency medical bell.

The door flew open. A team of doctors rushed in, shoving the drawing tray aside. They loaded the hemorrhaging boy onto a transport gurney.

"Mr. Crawford, step back!" a nurse shouted.

They wheeled Leo out, rushing him to immediate, life-saving care, leaving a hysterically panicked Daphne behind.

Julian’s demeanor shifted into pure, lethal urgency. He left the crying woman behind and marched directly back toward Nora’s ward.

His boot hit the heavy door, kicking it wide open with a deafening crash.

"Who is it?" Nora gasped, startling awake.

Julian ignored her cries of anxiety and confusion. He stormed to the bed, clamped his large hand around her arm, and dragged her off the mattress.

"Julian, what are you doing? What happened?" she pleaded, her bare feet stumbling over the floor as he forced her out into the hallway.

He shoved her forcefully into the waiting hands of the medical staff. He barked an absolute command. "Run the mandatory second compatibility test on her right now. Schedule the extraction surgery the very second the results are validated."

He had planned to let her rest for a week. But watching his son critically deteriorate erased every shred of mercy. He would save Leo tonight, even if a premature extraction meant sacrificing Nora’s life in the process.

Recognizing the sheer futility of fighting him in this state, Nora went numb. Like a lifeless puppet, she allowed the doctors to guide her into the examination room. Needles pierced her skin. Vials of blood were drawn. She lay still on the cold tables through the agonizing, comprehensive exams.

"If the second test is a match, we operate immediately," a nurse told her softly. "You need to begin fasting now in preparation."

Nora bit her pale lip and gave a deadened nod of submission.

Outside the sterile emergency room doors, the exhausted lead doctor approached Julian. His scrubs were wrinkled, his expression delivering grim, terrifying news.

"Mr. Crawford, his condition has severely worsened in a matter of minutes," the doctor stated plainly. "Without an immediate, compatible bone marrow transplant, his internal organs will begin to fail. He will not survive the night."

Daphne clutched her chest. She looked at Julian in absolute despair and asked a calculated, terrifying question. "But Jules... what if they aren't compatible?"

Julian turned to her. His gaze was dark, icy, and devoid of any mercy. "There is no what if." His voice was a steel blade. "Her bone marrow will definitely be a match."

Daphne looked tearfully through the glass window at the chaos surrounding Leo. She knew internally that Julian was right. It was a guaranteed match because Nora was the boy's actual birth mother.

Yet, as she looked on, a dark glint of pure malice flickered in Daphne's eyes. She crossed her arms, masking her thoughts behind a sorrowful weep. She silently vowed she would never let Nora successfully save Leo and earn Julian's favor.

A twisted, horrifying hope bloomed in her chest. She maliciously anticipated the impending tragedy, eager to see the impossible choice Nora would face when both her biological son and her biological daughter required her life-saving bone marrow at the exact same time.
