A Bitter Encounter

Nora took the lightly scented handkerchief from Roman’s outstretched hand, wiping the fresh tears from her cheeks. She took a ragged breath, cutting through the heavy silence that lingered from her confession. "The past does not matter anymore, Roman. My regrets, the naive mistakes... none of it matters. My only priority is finding my kids."

A fierce internal resolution solidified in her chest. The very moment she located her children, she would leave Julian forever. He would never cast a shadow over their lives again.

Roman looked down at her frail, trembling frame. His expression softened as he offered a gentle reassurance. "You need strength first. Take care of your body now so you can protect them when the time comes."

His phone buzzed—a single letter 'Y' flashing on the screen. He silenced it. "I have matters to handle. But I’ve prepared everything you need for your freedom." He gestured to a sleek suitcase resting near the door. "Inside are fresh, expensive clothes, daily necessities, and a clean mobile phone. My contact information is already added. Just text me the second you need anything. There is also a loaded bank card inside; the PIN is your ID number."

"Roman," Nora pleaded, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Please. Bring me news about them."

"Expect good news from me as swiftly as possible," Roman promised solemnly before slipping out the door.

Left alone, Nora opened the suitcase. She ignored the luxurious fabrics and reached straight for the phone. For hours, she sat curled on the sterile hospital bed, her thumbs flying across the screen. She meticulously devoured five years of missed global and local news, tracing the rise of the Crawford Group, the movements of the Mercers, and the Kensington empire.

A deep, suffocating need for closure eventually pulled her from the device. She showered, dressed in the crisp clothes Roman provided, and stepped toward the heavy door. She needed to leave the ward to visit her late mother's grave.

She pulled the handle, only to find a stern female bodyguard in a dark suit blocking her path.

"Ms. Sterling, how can I assist you?"

"I need to leave," Nora stated firmly. "I am going to visit my mother's grave."

The guard did not budge, physically blocking the doorway. "I have strict, unyielding orders from Mr. Crawford. You are confined to this ward. Please step back inside."

The crushing realization hit Nora like a physical blow. She had not won any freedom. She had merely traded a concrete prison cell for a sterilized hospital one.

Furious and panicked, Nora slammed the door shut. Her hands shook as she pulled out the new phone and dialed a number permanently burned into her memory. He picked up on the second ring.

"Julian Crawford," Nora demanded, her voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "Are you locking me up like a common criminal?"

A low, sneering chuckle came through the speaker. His voice dripped with cruelty. "The law might have forgiven your crime, Nora, but your actions remain utterly unpardonable to me."

The sheer psychological weight of his merciless words crashed down on her already depleted body. The room spun. A suffocating darkness swallowed the edges of her vision. The phone slipped from her numb fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud. Her knees buckled.

"Ms. Sterling!" a muffled voice cried out from the hallway.

The door swung open, but Nora was already falling. She fainted dead away, crashing onto the cold linoleum floor.

The transition back to consciousness was a hazy, feverish sequence. A deeply worried doctor hovered above her, hooking an IV drip to the back of her bruised hand. Nora drifted in and out of a severe delirium, the heat of the fever burning through her veins. She clung to the fragile, frayed thread of life for one reason alone: the children she had never met.

Through the blurring edges of her fever dream, the harsh hospital lights softened. Her vision focused on a small figure standing near her bedside. It was a thin, sickly boy. He wore pajamas covered in green dinosaur prints and held a stuffed husky tight to his chest.

Nora’s breath hitched. She reached a weak, trembling hand through the haze, her fingers brushing the empty air near his sleeve. "Son?" she murmured, her voice raw and desperate. "Are you... my son?"

The boy blinked, tilting his head with a sweet, devastating innocence. "I'm not," he replied.

Despair instantly ravaged Nora’s pale face. The fever spiked, pulling her deeper into the delusion. She cried out in her delirium, tears spilling onto the pillow. "Julian! Julian Crawford, where did you hide them? Give them back to me! Give my babies back!"

Curious about the thrashing, distressed woman, the boy stepped back and slipped out the door. But the quiet only lasted a moment. He returned quickly, approaching the edge of the bed. Demonstrating unexpected tenderness, he peeled the backing off a cooling patch and pressed it gently to Nora’s burning forehead. He then unwrapped a sweet milk candy and carefully slipped it into her dry mouth.

The sudden burst of sugar spread across her tongue, slowly clearing the thick fog clouding her mind. Nora’s breathing leveled out. As her vision sharpened, she stared at the boy. The absolute clarity of his facial features hit her. The strong brow, the shape of the jaw—he resembled Julian closely.

Surprised by the uncanny resemblance, Nora swallowed hard. "What is your name?"

The boy smiled brightly. "I'm Leo Crawford."

A deep, starved maternal instinct hijacked her lingering fever. Fueled by a desperate yearning to hold the flesh and blood she had been denied, Nora reached out, yearning to embrace the boy she wished were her own.

Before her fingers could even make physical contact, the heavy ward door burst open. The scene violently shattered.

Daphne charged into the room in a calculated panic. She aggressively snatched Leo out of Nora's reach, pulling the boy tight against her chest.

Daphne weaponized her words immediately, loudly declaring for anyone listening in the hall. "Nora! I understand if you hate me. I understand if you resent me! But you have no right to hurt my son!"

A nanny rushed in behind her. Daphne swiftly handed the bewildered Leo off, ordering the woman to remove him from the room. As the door clicked shut, Daphne turned back to the bed. With sheer malice, she deliberately twisted the psychological knife deep into Nora’s broken heart.

Daphne leaned in and hissed, "Your kids are dead. Don't even think about stealing mine."

The extreme cruelty of the statement acted like a bucket of ice water, violently jolting Nora back to full reality. The sickening, revolting truth washed over her. She had almost warmly embraced the child of the very woman who destroyed her life.

Intense revulsion churned in Nora's stomach. Her gaze hardened into solid ice. She pushed herself up against the pillows, snapping back at the woman standing over her bed.

"Do you know why your son is so terribly sick, Daphne?" Nora asked rhetorically, her voice dropping into a lethal whisper. She delivered the verbal strike without hesitation. "His illness is direct karmic retribution for all of your evil deeds."

Enraged beyond reason by the curse placed on her child, Daphne lunged forward with a raised hand to physically strike the bedridden woman.

But Nora was quicker. She deftly dodged the clumsy blow. Thrusting her arm upward, Nora violently grabbed a fistful of Daphne’s styled hair and yanked her down. With her other hand, Nora delivered a massive, resounding slap across Daphne’s face that echoed sharply throughout the tense hospital room.
