The Hacker's Challenge

Dalton finished laying out his calculated psychological analysis. He stood tall by the polished desk, a proud and expectant smile stretching across his face. He waited for the praise, expecting a nod of approval for his brilliant deduction. Instead, Declan Lancaster leveled a bone-chilling glare at him. The triumphant look on Dalton’s face faltered. It crumbled into dust under the weight of that stare.

"OCD? Autism?" Declan repeated. His voice sounded unnervingly calm, but a dangerous, bubbling fury lurked just beneath the surface.

A cold sweat broke out across Dalton’s forehead, trickling down his temples. He bit his own tongue, realizing his severe blunder. He had just casually and openly insulted Master Lachlan. Yes, the boy was problematic, a literal terror to the staff. But he was still Mr. Lancaster’s beloved son. Only Declan possessed the right to criticize the child. Anyone else doing so was practically digging their own grave.

Without breaking eye contact, Declan leaned forward, steepling his long fingers together. "Dalton," he said smoothly. "You seem to understand Lachlan's condition perfectly. Why don't I pass the immense, soul-crushing responsibility of personally caring for him directly over to you?"

Dalton dropped his professional facade in an instant. His face drained of color, turning a sickly shade of pale. He practically begged for mercy. "Mr. Lancaster, please! I have an entire family to feed. Master Lachlan already forced eleven professional drivers to resign in a span of mere seventeen days. Three of them suffered a severe relapse of high blood pressure. Two developed coronary heart disease from the sheer frustration. Five became so mentally disoriented they couldn't remember their way back home. The last one even developed trauma-induced schizophrenia!"

Declan let out a soft scoff, projecting the image of an unbothered, protective father. "If those men suffered from underlying health conditions from the get-go, a high-stress occupation like driving is clearly unsuitable for them."

Dalton wiped the dripping sweat from his brow, his pulse racing from the humiliation. He tried to defend the heroic drivers. "Mr. Lancaster, the driving wasn't the dangerous part. Master Lachlan is just too ruthless."

"For example?" Declan prompted lightly. He always enjoyed hearing about his son's actions.

"Take Mr. Kirk for starters," Dalton recounted frantically, gesturing with his trembling hands. "He always had underlying blood pressure issues. One day, he praised Master Lachlan for his intelligence. Master Lachlan looked at the bald man and replied, 'Not as much as you! You’re a shining beacon of knowledge!' Mr. Kirk's blood pressure spiked on the spot. Then there's Mr. Barrett. He suffers from anxiety, which makes his eyelids twitch. Master Lachlan convinced the poor man he had a fatal muscular disorder. Mr. Barrett suffered a literal panic attack and required emergency hospitalization."

Declan furrowed his brow, remaining silent as he listened to this pathetic display. His son’s impossibly sharp tongue was a formidable weapon. Outwardly, he maintained his stern defense. Internally, deep beneath his calm exterior, he acknowledged the painful truth. Lachlan harbored a deep-seated hatred for strangers. The five-year-old had developed an unhealthy, obsessive psychological reliance purely on his father.

Something tugged at Declan's chest, a rare flicker of paternal concern. He needed to cure the boy's rigid, isolated mindset. Extreme exposure was the only viable method to break the walls Lachlan had built around himself.

Declan abruptly waved his hand, cutting off Dalton's rambling excuses. "Dalton, we’ll go with your plan."

Dalton blinked, stunned by the sudden command.

"Find a way to coerce Chloe to be Lachlan’s nanny," Declan declared, his tone leaving no room for argument.

Dalton swallowed hard. He offered a weak protest. "But she ran away. Trying to catch her now would be as hard as it was five years ago. She vanished into the city."

A dark, amused snort escaped Declan's lips. "Did she really?"

Dalton paused. Realization struck him like a physical blow. Chloe’s mother had just submitted a specific hospital application. That piece of paper meant Chloe was already inescapably trapped within Declan's corporate web. She could not run. Declan had figured everything out.

Miles away, securely hidden in the quiet, unassuming district of Prosper Town, Chloe stood over the bathroom sink. Cold water rushed from the faucet, swirling down the drain. She splashed her face, meticulously washing away the lingering traces of makeup. As the cosmetics dissolved, the physical signs of the abuse she suffered at the hospital emerged in the harsh bathroom light. Dark, blooming bruises mottled her pale skin, a stark reminder of the ordeal.

She stared at her reflection, steadying her ragged breathing. She reached for a set of loose-fitting, long-sleeved clothes and pulled them on carefully. She adjusted the collar, ensuring the brutal marks were hidden from sight. She could not let her children see this. She plastered on a bright, fake smile, practicing it once in the mirror before stepping out of the bathroom.

She headed straight toward the kitchen to prepare dinner, pulling fresh vegetables from the fridge. She intentionally left her two perceptive children alone in the adjacent study. She believed they were watching their favorite shows, unaware of the intense plotting occurring behind the closed door.

Inside the locked study, the atmosphere was thick with determination.

Baby Benji stood triumphantly before his sister, Lettie. He held his tiny fist out with a dramatic flourish. Slowly, he unfurled his fingers to reveal a heavy, expensive silver tie clip resting in his palm.

Lettie frowned, unimpressed by the shiny object. "Isn't this just a tie clip? A very expensive one, sure."

"This is no ordinary clip," Benji declared. His bright eyes glowed with a fierce, protective anger. "This was taken from the bad guy who kidnapped Mommy. This is our evidence. We can use it to find the criminal."

Lettie’s eyes widened with awe. "If we find him, can we avenge Mommy?"

"Of course," Benji vowed, puffing out his small chest. "I'm the man of the house now. I vow to exact revenge and protect you and Mommy at all costs."

Lettie leaned in to carefully examine the custom-engraved silver surface. She traced the embossed letters and slowly sounded the name aloud. "Dec-lan Lan-cas-ter."

Wasting no time, Benji dropped onto the floor in front of his computer. He rapidly booted up the machine and reduced their cartoon video player to a small window in the bottom corner of the screen. His small fingers flew across the keyboard, conducting a swift, efficient web search for the name.

Within seconds, the search engine populated the screen with articles. Benji clicked on a prominent corporate profile.

"I knew it," Benji muttered, his voice dropping into a serious register. "The jerk who hurt Mommy is the tyrannical president of Apex Global Hospital. Look at this net worth, Lettie. He's a massive tycoon."

He scrolled through the expansive wiki page, noting a distinct, curious lack of any personal photographs. The site featured plenty of hospital buildings and financial charts, but no face. "Too bad there’s no picture of him."

Lettie sagely nodded her head, her tone innocent yet firm. "Real-life villains obviously never post their pictures to avoid being caught."

Benji cracked his knuckles, a wicked smile spreading across his face. "Hmph. How dare he bully Mommy. It is time to give this arrogant tycoon a massive, humiliating taste of my fury."

Benji minimized the browser and opened a black terminal window. Rapidly typing lines of complex code, he assumed his notorious hacker alias: Master Benji. His tiny fingers danced over the keys with practiced ease. He targeted the impenetrable exterior firewall of Apex Global Hospital's main server network.

Line by line, he bypassed their security protocols. He tampered with the network security key, cracking the encryption and systematically breaching the mainframe. With a final, decisive keystroke, he crashed their elegant corporate homepage.

In its place, he forcefully uploaded a massive, taunting text message. The bold letters dominated the screen in stark white against a black background:

"Declan Lancaster, how dare you bully beautiful girls? Show your face so we can have a fair fight, man to man! If you can beat my challenge, good for you. Oh yeah, have I mentioned that I’m five years old..."

With his digital handiwork flawlessly finished, Benji casually shut off the computer monitor. The screen faded to black.

The two tiny adults unlocked the study door. They walked out and sat at the dining table to eat their dinner, acting as if nothing happened.

Almost immediately across the city, utter chaos erupted at the headquarters of Apex Global.

The IT department descended into a blazing panic. Sirens blared in the server room as error messages flooded every monitor. Technicians scrambled over each other, shouting frantic commands.

Sweating staff members physically sprinted down the marble hallways toward the executive office. They didn't bother knocking. They burst through the heavy double doors, gasping for breath as they faced a furious Declan.

"Mr. Lancaster, bad news!" the lead technician cried out, his voice cracking with terror. "Our entire network has been compromised by hackers!"
