A Twin's Rescue

Standing near the reception desk of the hospital's expansive, brightly lit lobby, a stylish little boy wearing a dark black mask caught the on-duty receptionist nurse's eye. He sported a crisp white T-shirt featuring a bold armor graphic across his chest, paired with sleek black track pants. The monochrome look of his outfit made him seem like a miniature fashion model, or perhaps a little prince stepping right out of a comic book. Thoroughly charmed by his impeccable fashion sense and adorable demeanor, the nurse leaned over the smooth marble counter.

"Who are you looking for in such a large building, little one?" she asked, her voice gentle and accommodating.

The boy paused. He remembered his mother's strict, repeated warnings about speaking to strangers. He needed a cover story, something believable that would get him past the front desk without raising alarms. Lying smoothly, he threw in a slight stammer for added effect. "I'm looking for my—my daddy!"

As he spoke, the nurse observed his big, perfectly round eyes peeking out from just above the rim of his dark mask. She froze, awestruck by a sudden realization. The unique shape and intense, striking color of his eyes were an exact, unmistakable match to those of the famously cold Mr. Lancaster. Declan Lancaster was a man who commanded fear and respect in equal measure, known for his trademark serious scowl. Most people would not dare approach him. This little guy standing before her was the direct opposite—soft, cuddly, and emanating a warm energy that could melt snow.

Assuming without a shadow of a doubt that this irresistibly soft boy must be Mr. Lancaster's secretive son, she broke into a wide, eager smile.

"Oh, I see! You must be looking for Mr. Lancaster," she said quickly, pointing toward the bank of silver elevators. "His executive office is right up on the ninth floor."

"Thank you," the boy chirped.

"Shall I take you up there myself?" the nurse offered, already stepping out from behind her workstation.

The boy shook his head, politely but firmly declining her offer of a personal escort. Having an adult tail him would strictly ruin his covert rescue plan. He spun on his heels and hopped onto the nearest elevator just as the metal doors parted. The moment the doors slid shut, cutting off the nurse's fond gaze, his eyes glued themselves to the blinking digital tracker on his blue smartwatch.

The elevator chimed, announcing his arrival on the ninth floor. He stepped out and quietly followed the digital signal down the plush carpeted hallway. The blinking dot on his wrist led him straight to a heavy mahogany door. A brass plaque mounted on the wood read "President's Lounge."

He reached for the brass handle but noticed the high-tech copper fingerprint lock securing the mechanism. He possessed no sophisticated hacking tools for physical hardware. With no better plan in mind, he simply raised his hand and pressed his little index finger firm against the glowing glass scanner.

A sharp beep echoed in the quiet hall. Miraculously, the machine flashed green. The heavy door clicked open.

The little guy blinked in surprise but did not waste another second. Rushing inside, his gaze swept the luxurious room and locked onto his target.

Chloe sat huddled on the hardwood floor beneath a massive oak desk. Her wrists were bound tight to a heavy table leg with an azure silk tie. Her clothes were a ruined, tangled mess, and her pale legs were marked with fresh bruises. Her shoulders shook hard with suppressed tears.

"Mommy!" he yelled, dropping his sleek scooter to the floor and dashing across the room toward her.

Chloe's head snapped up. Her bloodshot eyes widened as she took in the sight of her baby, Benji, running toward her. She was utterly stunned. Her tear-filled gaze darted from his masked face back to the complex copper door mechanism.

How did he get in? The realization hit her instantly, confirming a wild hunch she had harbored. Her baby Benji really did possess the exact same biometric fingerprint as his twin brother, Lachlan!

Benji scrambled to her side, his small hands working fast to tackle the tight knots of the azure silk tie binding her wrists. Once her hands were free, Chloe scooped him into a crushing hug, her breath hitching in her chest.

Benji pulled back and aggressively tore off his black mask. His incredibly handsome face scrunched up with pure, unadulterated anger.

"Mommy, who's the jerk who bullied you? I'll kill him," he declared fiercely, his tiny fists balling at his sides.

To prove his point, the five-year-old stepped back and executed a remarkably nimble, perfect roundhouse kick into the empty air. The martial arts move was flawless, a technique he had honed from years of intensive, competitive Taekwondo training. Chloe had initially signed him up to strengthen his frail body, but his coach soon raved about his natural talent. Two years later, Benji's bookshelves were crammed with gleaming trophies. He had even started challenging older groups, performing exceptionally well.

Intensely aware of the looming danger of Declan returning to the lounge, Chloe grabbed his small arm and quickly hushed him.

"We need to leave, right now," she urged, pushing herself up from the hardwood floor. "But we have to delete the hospital's central surveillance footage first. The bad guys cannot discover your face on those tapes."

"That's easy. Leave that to me," Benji replied with pristine confidence.

He marched straight over to the heavy oak desk and climbed onto the large leather chair. Waking the desktop computer, his tiny fingers began to fly across the keyboard. Lines of code reflected in his dark eyes as he navigated the system bypasses. Within minutes, the entire building's backend surveillance network was wiped clean.

Meanwhile, far across the city, the ultra-exclusive City South villas stood as a beacon of luxury, blending into the distant horizon. The microdistrict boasted a record-low percentage of the city's population; only the richest and most powerful people could afford to live in this paradise. A massive Lincoln drifted purposefully into a private underground garage. The tires screeched against the smooth concrete as Declan slid the heavy vehicle perfectly into the parking spot.

Declan killed the engine, stepped out of the car, and hurried inside the grand house. He expected to return to an empty, quiet place, ready to cook a quick meal for his son. Instead, the moment he unlocked the front door, he was greeted by the rich, mouth-watering aroma of sweet and sour pork ribs wafting from the spacious kitchen.

He paused in the foyer, frowning in confusion.

"Declan? When did you get back?" Penelope called out, carrying a steaming platter of ribs toward the dining area. His mother was right behind her, happily setting the long wooden table with porcelain plates.

Declan's gaze shifted toward the sprawling living room rug. His father sat proudly on the floor beside Declan's son, Lachlan. The boy was absorbed in happily building a massive, towering Lego robot. The complex plastic structure was already taller than the child himself.

Declan walked into the room, irritation prickling at his skin. He had dropped everything at the office and abandoned his interrogation just for this.

"If Grandpa and Grandma are here, why did you need daddy to come back?" Declan asked casually, though a sharp edge lined his words.

Ignoring him, Lachlan picked up another plastic brick and snapped it onto the robot's shoulder. Click.

"Say something!" Declan snapped, his patience running thin.

Lachlan did not bother to look up. His small hands continued their precise work, fitting the blocks together. "You chose to come back by yourself," he replied coolly.

Deeply frustrated, Declan took a step closer, trying to reason with the boy. "I abandoned my work and rushed all the way home because I genuinely thought you had no lunch to eat. If you had just told me Grandpa and Grandma were here, I wouldn't have needed to rush."

Lachlan grabbed two bright red blocks. He forcefully slammed the final pieces into the Lego robot's face, forming the eyes.

He stood up and finally met Declan's gaze.

"The doctors said I have autism. Why are you expecting me to say that much? Idiot!" Lachlan retorted with razor-sharp precision.

Before Declan could formulate a response, Lachlan stepped forward, physically shoving his father aside. The small boy marched past him and headed straight for the grand staircase, walking alone.

Declan's temper flared. "Why are you talking so much now?" he yelled furiously up the stairs after him.

Lachlan paused on the landing. He snapped over his shoulder, "I guess I've outdone myself!"

He continued his march upstairs, disappearing from sight.

Declan's handsome face darkened. A tense silence fell over the massive living room, save for the clinking of dishes in the adjacent kitchen.

From the sofa, Grandpa Lancaster let out a dry, sarcastic laugh. "Like father like son," he remarked.

Furious at being mocked by his own child and now his father, the remnants of Declan's restraint snapped. He clenched his fists, his knuckles turning white. He took a heavy step toward the center of the rug, his eyes locked on the painstakingly built Lego robot. He raised his foot, ready to physically smash the towering plastic structure to pieces.

"Don't do it."

Grandpa hastily jumped up from the floor and intervened, grabbing Declan's arm in a vice grip.

Declan glared at the older man. "Let go."

"I said don't do it," Grandpa warned, his voice grave. He pointed a steady finger at the tall, blocky figure standing on the rug. "This is Lachlan's mommy. If you touch his mommy, your son said that he'll do the same to yours."

Declan stopped dead in his tracks. His raised foot hovered in the air before slowly lowering back down to the carpet.

He stared at the robot. The words echoed in his head. *This is Lachlan's mommy.*

He swallowed the bitter frustration welling in his throat and stepped back. It had always been exactly this way. The entire household would invariably suffer whenever Lachlan threw a massive fit over Declan's heavy-handed actions. The chaos was inevitable, and it always ended up with Grandma shedding painful tears for the emotional distress of her dear, broken grandson.
