The False Death

Declan Lancaster stood in the stoic silence of the evening, the cold biting at the sharp lines of his face. His jaw remained locked, a mask of suppressed emotion, as his eyes cut downward to the swaddled newborn baby that had just been delivered into his arms. The infant fussed, shifting in the thick blankets, yet Declan offered no comfort. He lifted his gaze to the courier standing before him.

"Where’s the child's mother?" he asked through gritted teeth.

The courier dipped his head, offering a slight, respectful bow. His voice carried a rehearsed, somber tone. "My apologies, sir. The child's mother has died in the hospital from dystocia."

Declan’s broad shoulders tensed. He stared at the man, the silence stretching taut across the porch. "Dead?"

To verify the grim claim, the courier reached into his pocket, retrieved his phone, and presented a digital memorial portrait. Declan's dark eyes locked onto the glowing image. It displayed Chloe. Her face was bloated. Her skin held the deathly, ghost-like pallor of a corpse. Her swollen eyes stared blankly into the camera lens in a gruesome, unsettling post-mortem display.

If there was any microscopic trace of lingering sympathy or guilt residing within Declan’s chest, it vanished the second he processed the sight. He exhibited no shock. He offered no mourning. Instead, he maintained a cold, pragmatic composure.

"Tell me the exact location where she is buried," he demanded, his voice devoid of a single tremor.

"Number 674 in Pine's Hollow Cemetery," the courier answered.

Declan did not wait for a profound emotional processing of her death to wash over him. He did not ask for details of her final moments. He simply clutched the newborn child tightly against his chest, hurriedly turned his back on the messenger, and retreated inside his imposing residence. The heavy oak doors clicked shut, locking the winter air out.

Unbeknownst to Declan, a brown sedan sat discreetly parked in the shadows just down the street. Chloe sat behind the steering wheel. Her knuckles gripped the leather rim so hard they turned white. She watched the entire exchange unfold through the windshield. Her heart sank into a bottomless pit of despair as she witnessed his chilling indifference to the explicit news of her death.

He had not shed a tear. His stride had not faltered.

The harsh reality crashed down upon her, heavy and suffocating. Two entire lifetimes of her passionate, unwavering love, her endless sacrifice, and her fierce devotion had failed to penetrate his impenetrable, icy heart. The man felt nothing for her.

As she stared at the empty porch where he had just stood, her long-held yearning for him finally fizzled out forever. The romantic illusions she had clung to dissolved into ash, leaving behind a cold, hollow emptiness. In the wake of her shattered love, only the primal instinct to survive remained. She had to stay strong. She put the car in gear and drove away from the estate.

Five years later.

The capital city airport buzzed with chaotic energy. Announcements echoed over the loudspeakers, blending with the clatter of luggage wheels against polished floors. Chloe navigated the bustling, densely populated corridors with urgent strides. She remained heavily concealed beneath a meticulously crafted disguise. A dark baseball cap sat pulled low over her brow. A black facial mask covered the lower half of her face. Giant, face-obscuring sunglasses shielded her eyes.

Trailing closely behind her were two breathtakingly beautiful five-year-old twins. The boy, Benjamin, rode a sleek scooter. He wore a red jersey with embroidered wings on the shoulders, paired with dark slacks and pristine sneakers. Beside him walked Colette, dressed in a frilly pink princess dress, her dark hair tied into neat pigtails.

The twins possessed an inherent, radiant charm. They drew immediate, unwanted attention from the massive crowds. Passersby slowed their pace, offering warm smiles and pointing at the adorable duo.

Instead of ignoring them, the twins gleefully introduced themselves.

"I'm Benjamin!" Benji announced proudly.

"And I'm Colette!" Lettie chimed in, waving at an admiring woman.

Unable to maintain her cool under the rising anxiety, Chloe whipped around. Her suitcase skidded to a halt. She marched back and sharply reprimanded them.

"Benji! Lettie!" she scolded, her voice muffled but stern. "What have I told you about the terrifying reality of human traffickers? Why would you so freely distribute your real names to absolute strangers?"

The twins stopped. Benji pouted his lips, his bright eyes staring up at her heavy outfit.

"Mommy, why do you wrap yourself up like that?" he questioned innocently. "You look so suspicious. Are you a bad guy?"

Chloe felt a sharp pang of guilt strike her chest. She knew she was taking a massive, life-threatening risk by returning to this city. Her only motivation was her mother's critically deteriorating health. The old woman wished to see her daughter and grandchildren one last time.

Chloe was hyper-aware of the danger lurking here. If Declan were to ever discover that she had faked her own death and successfully hoodwinked him, his wounded pride would demand retribution. He would literally kill her.

Acting on pure survival instinct, Chloe dug into her tote bag and pulled out two smaller pairs of sunglasses. "Put these on. Now," she ordered, swift and desperate. She needed to hide their highly recognizable eyes—eyes that mirrored their father's perfectly.

The twins sighed in unison and slid the dark frames over their faces.

"At least Mommy thinks it's cool," Benji mumbled, adjusting the bridge of his glasses.

Chloe exhaled a shaky breath. They linked hands and marched toward the airport exit.

Suddenly, the atmosphere near the automatic glass doors shifted. The crowd seemed to part. A familiar, tall, and exceptionally slender figure strode toward the entrance.

Chloe's breath hitched. Her heart leaped straight into her throat.

It was Declan.

Panic seized her veins. She frantically pulled the twins behind a structural pillar, using the approaching man as a real-time cautionary tale for her children. Pointing subtly toward him, she whispered, "Especially men who look like dogs in suits and ties... Take a look at that man walking over there. Though he looks chic and elegant, he might be a cruel man. Most likely a human trafficker."

As she desperately attempted to maneuver her children out of his direct path, Declan’s gaze swept across the terminal. He looked straight in her direction.

Chloe froze in her tracks. Her blood turned to ice.

To her absolute shock, a warm, genuine smile spread across his usually stoic face. Her mind instantly went awhirl. Naive, buried fantasies clawed their way to the surface of her thoughts. Did he recognize her? Had five long years of separation miraculously made him realize what he had lost?

That fragile illusion shattered into a million pieces a second later.

"Declan!" A gentle, melodic female voice called out from just behind Chloe's shoulder.

Declan brushed past Chloe, his broad shoulder nearly grazing hers. His relaxed expression hardened into a distinct hint of annoyance at the weirdly dressed woman physically blocking the walkway. He stepped around her without a second glance, heading straight toward a gorgeous, elegant woman standing a few feet away.

He stopped in front of the fragile beauty, smiling with sincere affection. He reached out and gently took her heavy luggage from her hands. It was a display of tender, considerate care that Chloe had never once been privileged to see during their entire marriage.

Observing this, little Colette tugged on Chloe's coat. She cooed innocently, "Mommy, that man looks like a good person. He helped that lady."

Chloe’s heart hardened instantly, turning to stone. "What do you know? You can’t judge a book by its cover," she murmured bitterly, hastily pulling her kids away from the painful scene.

She dragged the twins toward the exit doors, unable to stop herself from taking one final, lingering look over her shoulder. She watched Declan's unprecedented gentleness directed toward the delicate woman.

"Scumbag," Chloe growled under her breath.

She pushed through the glass doors into the bustling drop-off zone. She found herself utterly incapable of fathoming why a man of his supposed intellect would prefer a high-maintenance bimbo over a multifaceted, highly capable wife and fiercely protective mother like herself. That woman looked like porcelain, ready to shatter at the slightest touch. Chloe, on the other hand, could handle anything life threw at her.
