A Fateful Collision

The morning commute to Callahan Corporation buzzed with city traffic outside the tinted windows of the spacious company car. Clara settled back against the plush leather seats, her briefcase resting near her feet. Today required her full focus. She planned to personally integrate her newly developed smart chip into the company's main product line. But right now, her attention remained fixed on the two small figures sitting beside her.

Declan sat tall, puffing out his chest with a deep sense of responsibility. "I will watch over her in the waiting room," he promised, his young voice carrying a stern edge. "I won't let anyone hurt Haze while you work, Mommy. You don't have to worry."

Clara smiled. Warmth blossomed in her chest at her son's fierce loyalty. She reached over, stroking his dark hair before shifting her gaze to her daughter. Hazel sat beside him, quiet and still, her pale skin looking as soft as spun sugar. Clara could not resist. She leaned forward and affectionately pinched her daughter’s squishy cheek.

"Mommy, stop!" Declan protested, quickly swatting at her hand. He scowled, playing the role of the protective older brother to perfection. "Why are you bullying Haze again?"

Clara laughed, a light, teasing sound that filled the quiet cabin. "I can't help it. Haze is just too cute. Look at her, she is impossible to resist."

The peaceful moment shattered in an instant.

Tires screeched against the asphalt. The car jerked to a jarring, sudden halt. The forceful momentum threw Clara and the children forward, their bodies slamming hard against the locking seatbelts. Clara gasped, instinctively throwing an arm out to shield the kids from the dashboard.

A loud, metallic crunch echoed from the front bumper.

The driver whipped around, his face pale and slick with sudden sweat. "I am so sorry, Miss Clara," he stammered, his hands trembling on the steering wheel. "I rear-ended the car ahead of us. I need to step out and handle this dispute. Please, stay inside."

He unbuckled his seatbelt and rushed out onto the busy road. Clara quickly turned her attention to the backseat, running her hands over Declan and Hazel to ensure neither sustained any injuries. They were safe. But just as Clara let out a breath of relief, the usually catatonic and unresponsive Hazel moved.

The little girl reached out, her small fingers wrapping around the heavy door handle. Before Clara could process the sudden movement, Hazel shoved the door open.

"Haze, no!" Clara reached out, her fingers brushing empty air.

The little girl slipped through the gap like a ghost, dropping down onto the dangerous, crowded road.

Panic seized Clara’s chest. She scrambled to unbuckle her seatbelt, her hands fumbling blindly with the latch.

Outside, a man emerged from the rammed luxury vehicle. He stepped onto the asphalt, radiating a dark, intimidating aura that immediately suffocated the surrounding air. Dressed in a sharp tailored suit, his lean, imposing figure towered over the Callahan family’s lowly driver. The poor driver shrank back, terrified. He recognized power when he saw it, and the man standing before him carried a presence far more commanding than even Arthur Callahan.

It was Kaelen Vance.

Today, his regular chauffeur had called in sick, forcing him to drive himself. The collision delayed his rigid schedule, souring his mood the moment the bumper crumpled. His sharp eyes narrowed, staring down at the trembling driver with pure ice.

Before Kaelen could voice his displeasure, a tiny figure charged across the pavement. Hazel slammed into his long leg, her small arms wrapping tightly around his tailored trousers.

Kaelen froze. A notorious, uncompromising neat freak, he despised physical contact with strangers. His handsome expression instantly darkened into a terrifying scowl. He stared down at the child clinging to his leg, his patience snapping.

"Let go," he commanded. His deep voice sliced through the noisy street like a frozen blade.

The driver’s heart nearly stopped. Terrified of offending the city's most powerful man, he lunged forward. "Miss Hazel, please let go!"

He grabbed the little girl's arm, desperate to pull her away. Hazel reacted with vicious speed. She whipped her head around and clamped her teeth down hard onto the driver's hand.

The driver yelped in pain, ripping his hand back. Bright red blood welled up from the deep bite marks, dripping onto the asphalt.

Kaelen’s scowl deepened. The child's unprovoked aggression caught him off guard. Annoyance flared hot in his chest. He reached down, his large hand firmly gripping the back of Hazel’s collar, intending to lift her and toss her aside.

He yanked her upward. As he did, her head tilted back, and their gazes met.

Hazel stared at him with wide, shiny eyes that resembled dark stars in a night sky. Her fluffy hair framed her pale face, making her look exactly like a frightened, pitiful kitten hanging from his grasp.

The ice in Kaelen's notoriously cold heart cracked. To his own surprise, a strange softness washed over him, washing away his disgust. He held her suspended in the air, staring into those familiar dark eyes.

"Who are you?" he asked, his deep voice losing its frozen edge.

The moment the words left his mouth, a foreign pang of regret hit him. He had scared her. Before he could even begin to process why he cared, a frantic figure rushed into his peripheral vision.

Clara lunged forward, desperately snatching Hazel out of his grip and pulling the little girl into a fierce, protective embrace.

The sudden loss of the child’s weight left Kaelen stunned. A bizarre emptiness hollowed out his chest, as if a tiny piece of his own heart had been abruptly ripped away along with the girl. He flexed his empty fingers, his dark eyes locking onto the woman standing before him.

Clara stood there panting, her arms wrapped tight around Hazel. "Sir, I apologize," she breathed out, keeping her daughter shielded against her chest. "I am so sorry on behalf of my daughter. Please do not take offense. She is still just a child."

Internally, Clara was baffled to her core. Her daughter treated strangers like the plague, shrinking away from any touch. Yet, Hazel had just willingly and aggressively clung to this terrifyingly imposing man. Clara looked up, her gaze tracing the sharp, cold features of his face and the overwhelming authority he exuded.

An electric spark of recognition jolted through her mind. Her eyes went wide as the pieces clicked into place.

"Are you... Kaelen Vance?" Clara blurted out.

Kaelen’s expression hardened, the momentary softness evaporating into utter disdain. He let out a cold, cynical sneer. He had dealt with countless opportunistic women trying to scheme their way into his life, but using a child as a calculated ploy to grab his attention was a new low.

"No," Kaelen replied flatly.

Without giving her another glance, he turned on his heel. He strode back to his slightly dented luxury car, pulled the door shut, and drove away, leaving nothing but exhaust in his wake.

Clara lowered her eyes, staring at the empty space on the asphalt where his car had just been. Her grip tightened around Hazel. Even after spending four long, arduous years away from Bay City, she knew with unwavering certainty that she had not misidentified him.

She was widely regarded as the city's most beautiful woman, while Kaelen Vance stood untouchable as its wealthiest, most powerful man. The internet used to constantly photoshop their pictures together, endlessly dubbing them the perfect upper-class couple.

Even though they had never actually met before today, she knew exactly who he was.
