Not a Princess in a Tower

POV: Calla

I snap awake in a sudden panic, my chest heaving as I suck in sharp, ragged breaths. My eyes dart around the dark, dusty confines of the loft, tracking every shadow for his towering frame. A heavy wave of comforting relief washes over my battered body when I realize I am alone in the room. Dawn is slowly approaching, casting a weak, gray light through the thick barred windows.

"Rhea?" I call out in my mind, searching for my inner wolf.

She stirs sluggishly, letting out a low groan through our mental link. We have no idea how many hours or days Vane kept us unconscious with his drugged tea. My memory is a hazy blur of forced swallows and creeping darkness.

Every slight movement I make sends a searing, localized fire shooting up my leg. The heavy silver cuff locked tightly around my ankle burns like battery acid, the cursed metal digging viciously into my bruised skin. Having spent years working intimately with various metals in my custom jewelry shop down on the first floor, both Rhea and I know exactly how excruciating prolonged exposure to raw silver can be to a werewolf's biology. It poisons the blood. It drains our unnatural strength, leaving us weak and painfully mortal.

I stumble out of the small bed, my bare feet hitting the cold floorboards. My legs shake as I limp my way toward the small attached kitchen area. My stomach twists into painful knots. I am desperate for any source of food to replenish my drained strength. I throw open the fridge door, expecting to find the leftovers from earlier in the week. Bare shelves stare back at me. I tear through all the overhead cabinets, ripping the doors back on their hinges. Nothing. Not a single crumb.

"Seriously, fucking asshole! Trying to make me solely dependent on him for survival," I snarl aloud.

I slam the empty cabinet door shut. The sharp bang rings through the quiet loft. The sheer audacity of his starvation tactic solidifies my resolve. He wants to break me down until I am begging him for a scrap of bread. I have to escape this prison. I have to get back to the safety of my father's Brierwood Pack, no matter the cost.

Thankfully, the controlling jerk hadn't thought to shut off the main plumbing line to the loft. "At least I have water," I mumble to myself. I twist the tap, filling a dusty glass from the sink. I chug it down, letting the cool liquid soothe my dry, cracked throat, drinking until my stomach feels full.

I slowly move toward the tiny attached bathroom. This loft had always served as my peaceful oasis when pulling all-nighters to complete massive custom jewelry orders. I built my life here. I never in my wildest nightmares imagined it would one day become my literal prison cell. I turn on the shower, letting the hot water run and fill the small space with thick steam.

I begin rummaging through my old dresser drawers, searching for clean work clothes. I find my heavy-duty gear—thick, unyielding denim jeans and stiff shirts explicitly designed to protect my skin from flying sparks and molten metal. I toss them onto the counter and step under the scalding hot water.

As I wash the dried blood from my split lip and bruised cheek, a bitter, dark laugh unexpectedly escapes my throat. I realize I feel exactly like a helpless princess locked away in a tall tower, waiting for a savior to rescue me.

But the profound sadness that gripped me the night before is gone. It washes down the drain with the pink-tinted water. In its place, I am angry. A deep, bubbling, homicidal rage that I have never experienced before consumes my soul. It burns hotter than the silver seared into my flesh.

Stepping out of the shower, I pull on my heavy denim armor. I know I desperately need a tactical plan. Vane will inevitably be back. His massive, fragile ego simply couldn't resist the urge to come upstairs and showcase his dominance over me. I have to figure out exactly how to incapacitate him, get past his massive frame, and out that heavy reinforced door.

Sitting at the small, wobbly kitchen table, I systematically discard my limited options. Seduce him to lower his guard? The mere thought of his hands touching me again makes me want to physically vomit. Trick him into letting me downstairs into my tool-filled workshop? He is psychotic, but he isn't quite that stupid. Escape through the windows? I glare at the heavy iron bars I had personally reinforced years ago to keep out potential thieves. They are impenetrable.

"Damn it, Calla! Think! You are so much smarter than him," I scold myself.

Frustrated, I slam my fist down onto the wooden table. The violent vibration causes my glass of water to tumble off the edge. It crashes onto the hardwood floor, shattering into dozens of sharp, jagged pieces.

Staring intently down at the glittering broken glass on the floorboards, a brilliant, violent idea strikes me.

I sprint back to my dresser, grab another heavy denim work shirt, and use sheer force to rip the thick sleeves right off the garment. The seams tear with a satisfying rip. I tightly tie off the bottom cuffs into thick knots. Grabbing a pair of metal snips from my jewelry kit, I meticulously make tiny, strategic cuts up the length of the fabric.

Then, I rush back to the kitchen, pulling every single heavy ceramic dish I have left from the lower cabinets. I wrap them tightly in the torn chest piece of the denim shirt. Carefully and methodically, I smash the bundle against the hard edge of the counter until the plates and bowls break into large, incredibly jagged pieces.

I unwrap the fabric and pour the heavy, razor-sharp fragments down the knotted denim sleeves. I tie off the tops securely, taking a moment to deeply admire my deadly, makeshift sleeve maces. The weight feels perfect. The sharp ceramic edges poke dangerously against the slits I cut into the thick fabric, turning them into lethal bludgeons.

I am done being controlled and manipulated. I have decided I am going to fight my way out of this hellhole even if it physically kills me in the process. Vane thought I would simply break and become a docile, submissive little slave to his whims. He thought wrong.

I remind myself that I am the proud daughter of two powerful Alphas and two fierce Lunas. My bloodline is forged in battle and survival. I tighten my grip on my weapons, my eyes dark with cold, calculated resolve. Let him come. I am fully ready for war.
