Calla's Pull
POV: Calla
"Calla, right? Would you care to dance?"
I stared up at the chiseled jaw and striking features of Alpha Kaelen. My mind went blank. The noisy chatter of the ballroom faded into a dull buzz. I looked at his square jaw, the sandy blonde hair falling loose from his tie, and the rugged, unyielding set of his shoulders. I numbly nodded, murmuring a quiet agreement before my brain could process the request. He reached out, his large hand enveloping mine, and guided me toward the center of the polished dance floor.
Inside my head, my inner wolf, Rhea, snapped to high alert. She paced back and forth, restless and confused. We were both bewildered by this sudden invitation. Why was a high-ranking Alpha from another territory asking me to dance? More concerning was the magnetic pull I felt toward him. A fierce physical attraction hummed beneath my skin, shocking and inappropriate for a mated female. I kept my gaze trained on his collarbone, terrified that looking directly into his eyes would make me lose my train of thought.
We moved to the rhythm of the music. The silence stretched between us, thick with unspoken questions.
"I see you are part of Alpha Torin's Iron Wolf Pack," Kaelen said, his voice a smooth, deep rumble that vibrated over the music. "What brought you there?"
My emotional walls slammed into place. This was safe territory. A predictable question with a predictable answer.
"My mate was born in the Iron Wolf Pack," I recited the rehearsed lines smoothly, keeping my voice level. "Alpha Torin is a respectable leader. He and my father started some business ventures, so we hope our packs will grow together."
I expected a polite nod. I thought that would satisfy his curiosity and maintain the professional distance between us. Instead, his strong arm slipped further around my waist. Without warning, he pulled my petite frame flush against his hard chest. The heat of his muscular body seeped right through the thin silk of my formal dress.
My breath hitched. My heart slammed against my ribs at a frantic, terrifying speed. Wild panic flooded my veins. This kind of reaction did not belong to a safely mated she-wolf. The sacred mate bond was supposed to shield you from outside pulls, yet I felt dangerously intoxicated by the sheer power radiating from his inner wolf. The proximity was overwhelming. The scent of him clouded my judgment.
I shoved my hands against his solid chest, breaking his iron grip. "I'm sorry," I mumbled, taking a hasty step back and refusing to meet his gaze. "I just... I need to check on the kitchen staff. Thank you for the dance, Alpha Kaelen."
I didn't wait for his response. I practically fled the dance floor, pushing past the other dancing couples, desperate to clear my spinning head.
My pulse hammered in my ears as I hurried back to my family's table. I forced myself to take a deep, stabilizing breath, smoothing down the front of my dress and pasting on a calm, collected expression. I could not afford to draw attention to my erratic behavior. But the moment I reached my chair and sat down, the atmosphere in the room shifted. A heavy, crackling energy filled the air, thick with anticipation.
My younger sister, Nia, bolted up from her seat. The sudden movement knocked her chair backward. Her eyes were locked on the grand doorway of the ballroom, wide with awe. I followed her gaze. A tall, raven-haired Alpha stood there. His aqua eyes scanned the room until they locked onto Nia. He projected an aura of quiet confidence and raw power. The invisible tether snapping into place between them was unmistakable. He was her fated mate.
Sabine leaned forward, her face lighting up with recognition and joy. "Go to him, Nia," our mother urged softly, gesturing toward the door. "Bring him over. Introduce him to the family."
Nia didn't need to be told twice. She rushed across the room, oblivious to the crowd parting for her. The Alpha met her halfway, unable to resist the primal draw. He pulled her into his arms, burying his face in her neck to inhale her scent. Within moments, she led him back to our table, her face flushed with infectious joy.
"This is Alpha Leif of the Pine Country Pack," Nia introduced him proudly, her fingers firmly intertwined with his.
Alpha Leif offered a deep, respectful nod to my father. "Alpha Garret. It is an honor to finally meet you. I know we had a meeting scheduled for tomorrow to discuss investments, but it seems fate had other plans for tonight."
The happiness of their brand-new mating bond radiated through the space, touching everyone at the table. Sabine beamed, tears of joy welling in her eyes as she suggested they head out to the dance floor to celebrate. Nia and Leif excused themselves, looking at each other as if they were the only two people existing in the world.
I sat at the table and watched them glide across the floor. I was happy for my sister. She deserved this fairytale romance and a strong, loving mate. But seeing that untainted love sent my own dark thoughts spiraling. The stark contrast between Nia's joyful beginning and my own tragic reality with Vane hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. A wave of crushing depression washed over me. The emotional whiplash was too much to bear. I couldn't sit there and pretend to smile anymore. I needed to escape before the facade shattered.
I slipped away from the table, ducking out of the bustling ballroom and retreating down the quiet, empty hallways toward my isolated bedroom.
The silence of my room offered a temporary reprieve from the suffocating joy of the party. I dropped onto the edge of the mattress and dug my phone out of my small clutch bag. I needed to check in. I needed to know what mood Vane was in before I called him. The screen illuminated the dim room, revealing several missed calls and a new text message from my mate.
A freezing chill slid down my spine. The words blurred for a second before snapping into sharp, cruel focus.
"I hope you are enjoying your time. It's the last time you will see your family."
The phone slipped from my trembling fingers, bouncing silently onto the carpet. Terror gripped my throat, choking off my air. The threat was explicit. He was going to isolate me forever. I clamped a hand over my mouth, breaking down into heavy tears. My chest heaved as I sobbed, the invisible chains of my reality dragging me under the surface.
Inside my mind, Rhea whined in distress. *Cal, please!* she pleaded urgently. *Pick up the phone. Run downstairs right now. Show the text to Garret and Sabine. Let them help us! Our family has the power to stop him! They won't let him take us away!*
I shook my head, my shoulders shaking with fresh sobs. I was paralyzed by a sickening mixture of shame and fear. I couldn't drag my parents into my nightmare. If my father found out what Vane was doing to me, a brutal war would break out between the Iron Wolf Pack and ours. Blood would spill because of my weakness. I couldn't let my family suffer for my mistakes.
I wiped my wet cheeks, gasping for breath. I just needed to run. I needed to physically escape this suffocating room and the terrifying future looming over my head.
I scrambled to my feet, my shaking hands reaching for the zipper of my dress. I stripped off the formal gown, letting the expensive fabric pool at my feet. I threw on a pair of old sweatpants and a loose t-shirt. I shoved my feet into my sneakers and bolted out the door. I raced through the quiet corridors of the packhouse, desperate for the open air. I hit the tree line at a full sprint. I tore off the clothes I had just put on, tossing them behind a large oak tree. I embraced the shift, letting bone break and reform. I gave Rhea control, welcoming the wild, untamed instincts of the wolf to drown out my pathetic human despair.
Rhea's massive paws tore into the damp earth, propelling us forward. We moved swiftly through the dark, dense woods. She navigated on instinct, dodging thick tree trunks and leaping over fallen logs with effortless grace. The cool night wind whipped through our fur, offering a fleeting sense of freedom from the cage waiting for me back at the Iron Wolf Pack.
We ran hard and fast until the dense trees finally parted, revealing our hidden, sacred sanctuary. It was a secluded mountain clearing, untouched by the rest of the pack, filled with blooming night-flowers and wild herbs. The moonlight bathed the clearing in a soft, silver glow.
Rhea slowed her frantic pace, circling the perimeter before relinquishing control back to me. I shifted back into my naked human form. The transformation drained whatever adrenaline I had left in my system. I collapsed, falling to my knees among the crushed plants. The fragrant scent of lavender and wild mint rose into the air, mingling with the salt of my bitter tears.
"I think he's going to lock me up for good this time," I wept bitterly to the empty mountain air. My voice cracked, raw and hollow. "I don't think I'll ever see this place again. I'm never coming back."
I wrapped my arms around my shivering, naked body. I was bone-tired from the constant, invisible fighting I endured every single day. No one knew the extent of Vane's cruelty. No one saw the bruises fading beneath my long sleeves or the emotional cages he kept me in. I was so exhausted from pretending everything was fine.
Suddenly, the wind shifted direction.
A distinct, faint trace of sharp eucalyptus and cool mint swept through the clearing.
My crying halted instantly. The tears dried on my cheeks. The fine hair on my arms stood on end. My skin prickled with the heavy, undeniable sensation of being watched. Someone was out there, lurking in the shadows of the tree line.
My eyes flashed with golden lightning as I scrambled to my feet, scanning the dark perimeter. I flared my nostrils, drawing in deep breaths of the night air, attempting to track the scent. But before I could pinpoint the exact location, the heavy presence vanished into the night. The scent of eucalyptus faded, leaving only a lingering trace of mint that quickly dissipated on the breeze.
Rhea paced anxiously in my mind. We were both paranoid. *Was it Kaelen?* she asked, her tone laced with suspicion. *Did he follow us into the dark? Why would he be out here?*
I didn't have an answer. The uncertainty made my heart race for an entirely different reason. I was exposed, vulnerable, and naked in the middle of the woods. I needed to get back to the safety of the packhouse before I was missed at the party.
Desperate to regain my composure, I shifted back into Rhea. She sprinted through the forest, retracing our steps toward the packhouse territory at breakneck speed.
We reached the edge of the woods where I had left my clothes. I shifted back to my human form, quickly pulling the sweatpants and t-shirt over my shivering body. I smoothed down the fabric, taking a few deep, steadying breaths to calm my racing heart. I ran my fingers through my tangled hair, trying to look like I had just gone for a casual night jog.
I stepped onto the back patio, expecting it to be dark and deserted. Instead, I found my father, Alpha Garret, waiting for me in the darkened doorway.
I froze in my tracks. He stood casually against the wooden frame, holding a steaming mug in his hand. The dim patio lights cast long shadows over his face. He took a slow sip of his tea, his sharp eyes pinning me in place.
"How was your late-night run?" he asked, his voice deceptively calm.
"Good," I replied, forcing a lightness into my tone I didn't feel. "I just needed some air. The ballroom was getting a little stuffy."
My father didn't smile. He didn't offer a warm, fatherly response. He set his mug down on a nearby side table. Then, he did something unprecedented. Without a single word of warning, Garret deliberately projected the heavy, suffocating weight of his Alpha aura directly onto me.
My knees buckled under the sheer force of it. The air grew impossibly thick, pressing down on my shoulders like a physical weight. It was a forceful, domineering display of power. He explicitly reserved this suffocating command only for when his children were in serious trouble. He wasn't acting as my loving father right now; he was acting as my Alpha.
Compelling me with his unyielding authority, he locked eyes with me and commanded, "Tomorrow morning after breakfast, I need to see you in my office."
"Yes, Alpha," I replied quickly. My voice trembled under the crushing pressure. I was bewildered by his formal tone and the sheer intensity of his sudden command.
He didn't offer a single word of explanation. He turned on his heel and walked away, disappearing into the shadows of the packhouse corridors.
The heavy aura dissipated with his departure, leaving me gasping for breath. My mind immediately began racing a million miles an hour. Did he know? Did he see the text message on my phone? Did someone tell him about Vane? The terrifying apprehension of an unavoidable confrontation clawed at my chest. The secret I had guarded for so long felt like it was unraveling right in front of me.
Seeking a desperate refuge from the chaotic emotional spiral, I hurried up the back stairs and retreated to my bathroom. I turned the water dial to the hottest setting, stripping off my clothes and stepping into the shower stall. I let the scalding hot water wash over me, trying to scrub away the dirt from the forest floor and the dried tears on my cheeks. I scrubbed my skin until it was raw and red, trying to erase the lingering phantom scent of eucalyptus and mint, trying to wash away the paralyzing fear of tomorrow's meeting.
Finally, I turned off the water. I dried off with a towel and crawled into my bed. I pulled the heavy blankets up to my chin, seeking comfort in the dark. My heart still hammered with fear. I stared blindly at the ceiling. I forced myself to focus on the outside world, listening to the gentle lullaby of the wind rustling through the dense woods. I needed rest. Tomorrow was going to change everything. I allowed the steady sounds of nature to finally pull me down into an exhausted, dreamless sleep.
