The dinner table felt too large at night.

Not physically, Vincenzo’s long oak table always did that, but emotionally. Like there was a hollow space stretching between us that no amount of candles or warm food could fill. Rocco sat between us, happily demolishing his pasta, blissfully unaware of the quiet tension humming beneath the surface.

I tried to focus on him, on the way he slu
