Vespera left for the staff room barely five minutes after we finished lunch, waving her half-empty smoothie cup at me and muttering something about “that wicked test score mix-up.” I didn’t even get to tease her before she disappeared into the crowd.

Which left me standing alone with Kiernan again.

He shoved his hands into his pockets, looking at me like he was trying not to smile. “S
