The rain hadn’t stopped since that night. It came and went in waves, like the world didn’t know what to do with itself. I sat by the window in the living room, watching it slide down the glass, listening to the sound it made against the roof. The house had been quiet for days, too quiet.

My father said quiet was good, that it meant things were finally settling. But I couldn’t agree.
