Dragon Lord

Xavien plunged his heated body into the tepid waters of the bathhouse pool. The coolness of the water washed over his skin, but it did absolutely nothing to douse the fire raging in his blood. He scrubbed a wet, heavy hand hard down his face, dragging his fingers over his jaw. He dunked his head completely under the surface, letting the quiet isolation of the empty stone chamber surround him. He thanked the Six Gods for this small grace. He needed the silence. He needed to lock his mind down.

The carriage ride back to the aerie had been pure, unadulterated torture. His cock had turned into rigid steel the second he walked behind her, watching the natural, mesmerizing sway of her sweetly curved backside as she climbed into the small, confined space of the carriage. The heavy, throbbing erection had not faded for a single mile of the long journey. He had been so dangerously close to tearing her crimson dress off and taking her right there on the leather seats. To stop himself from doing something utterly foolish and destroying his own plans, he had resorted to lulling her into a forced unconsciousness. But even with her asleep, he lacked the willpower to pull away. He had spent the rest of the agonizing ride running his fingers through her soft hair, breathing in the sweet, maddening scent of her skin.

What the hell was wrong with him?

He had seen countless women. Many possessed beauty that easily rivaled hers. He had fucked his fair share of them, too. Yet he had never come so tenuously close to losing his iron control over a simple bedroom slave. The mere thought of her sitting in that barracks room was doing things to his body he could not afford. She was a tool. A purchased asset acquired to serve a dangerous, much greater purpose. He should not want her. He could not want her. He had locked her away in an unused room with a guard specifically to shatter this unnatural spell. He just needed this short break from her presence to get his head straight.

Footsteps echoed sharply against the stone tiles. The fleeting peace shattered. Raevis and Lorik strolled into the bathhouse chambers, walking straight from the training courtyard. Sweat coated their bare, heavily muscled chests, gleaming in the torchlight. They wore the satisfied, exhausted expressions of men who had just finished a brutal sparring session.

Raevis stretched his arms over his head. "She was looking right at me. How could any woman miss this stunning physique?" he bragged, his loud voice bouncing off the high stone walls. The blond warrior stepped to the edge of the pool opposite Xavien and dove in.

Lorik followed at a slower, more deliberate pace. The intricate dark tattoos shifted across his tanned skin as his muscles flexed. He gave Xavien a short nod. "Flamecleaver." Lorik lowered himself into the water with a quiet sigh.

Raevis surfaced, pushing wet blond hair out of his eyes. He flashed a cocky smirk at Xavien. "Ah, perfect timing. A third party to settle our debate. Tell me, Xavien. If you were a woman, which of us would be the first to catch your eye?" Raevis stood up waist-deep in the water. He struck a deliberate pose, flexing the carved muscles of his stomach and back. "Me, or this mottled fellow?"

Xavien suppressed a groan. Raevis possessed zero sense of propriety, an absurd trait for the man commanding the aerie's fighting forces. Lorik at least had the decency to look slightly embarrassed by his friend's antics. Xavien raised a skeptical brow, but the silent judgment only made Raevis flex harder.

"It is a moot point," Lorik said casually, leaning back against the smooth stone edge of the pool. "Rusk led her quite studiously away before she had a chance to properly admire either of us."

"I am never a moot point," Raevis countered. He dropped the pose and leaned against the wall, a malicious gleam lighting up his eyes. "Maybe she didn't crush on either of us because she was distracted. Didn't you see Rusk?" Raevis let the question hang in the humid air. He knew exactly what he was doing.

Xavien's jaw tightened. "See what?"

"His thick arm," Raevis taunted, his grin widening to show his teeth. "I saw him wrap it right around her bare shoulder. Intimately. He guided her right out of the courtyard and down the long corridor toward a secluded room." Raevis let out a low whistle. "She seemed to enjoy it, too. Can't say I blame him. I wish I could feel her silky skin."

Xavien froze. The tepid water around him suddenly felt like ice. Rusk was the guard he had personally assigned to watch Venyra's door. He put the man there to keep her isolated, to ensure she didn't wander the fortress tempting the other Lords. He certainly did not assign Rusk to put his dirty hands on her flesh.

Deep within Xavien's chest, a terrifying force surged to life. His inner dragon roared, violently awakened by the mental image of another man touching what belonged to him. The possessive fury was blinding. It stripped away his logic, his restraint, and his renowned composure in a single heartbeat.

Xavien surged upward. He stormed out of the pool, water cascading off his heavily muscled frame in heavy sheets. His amber eyes burned with a lethal, glowing rage.

Lorik sensed the dangerous shift instantly. He rushed forward, scrambling out of the water to intercept him. Lorik grabbed Xavien's thick bicep. "Stop," Lorik urged, his voice dropping low and urgent. "She is just a bedroom slave, Xavien. A purchase from the claiming house. A tool. She has an incredibly important use. Do not forget the mission."

Xavien ignored his friend completely. He ripped his arm out of Lorik's grip. He strode toward the changing area, grabbing his black pants and his weapons. His mind was locked onto a single, bloody goal. He did not care about politics. He did not care about the mission. He was going to retrieve the woman, and someone was going to bleed for their lasciviousness.

Meanwhile, Venyra remained blissfully unaware of the storm brewing in the bathhouse. She kept her head lowered, her eyes fixed firmly on the heavy boots of the guard walking ahead of her. Her mind raced as she followed Rusk through the grand, echoing corridors of the fortress. The architecture here was massive. Everything felt scaled for giants.

She frowned, realizing a strange detail about her surroundings. She had not seen a single woman since leaving the claiming house. Where did the aerie hide them all? This place was overflowing with hyper-masculine energy. Surely these men had mothers, sisters, or servants. Yet the stone halls were completely devoid of any feminine presence.

Rusk led her away from the lattice walkways and into a wider, more ornate corridor. The floor patterns resembled the area where she had been confined earlier, but grander. Only four heavy wooden doors spaced far apart lined this section of the hall.

The tawny-haired guard stopped in front of the last door on the right. It wasn’t locked. It wasn’t even closed. The dark timber swung inward, revealing a beautifully decorated room awash in soft light. Two wooden benches covered in plush blue cushions faced each other, centered over a richly detailed woven rug. Vibrant paintings of exotic birds hung on the stone walls, interspersed with lush potted plants. A delicious, warm scent wafted through the open doorway. It smelled like fresh baking and melting cheese.

Venyra hesitated. Who had summoned her? The guard had mentioned a name earlier, but it certainly wasn't Flamecleaver.

"Bring her in, Rusk," a soft, decidedly feminine voice called out from inside.

Rusk grunted. He motioned for Venyra to step inside. She walked past his broad frame, half-expecting him to scowl at taking orders from a woman. But he remained stiff and unreadable, vastly different from the brief, intense moment they shared on the stairs.

A woman stepped through one of the stone arches. Venyra stared, caught off guard. The stranger was perhaps ten years older than her, but the age did nothing to diminish her stunning beauty. She possessed warm, tanned skin and a set of startling, vivid green eyes. Chestnut curls were pulled back neatly from her face, making those bright eyes her most striking feature. She wore a simple violet gown. The neckline dipped low enough to showcase the swell of her breasts, but the cut remained practical. The skirt stopped sensibly at her calves, unlike Venyra's own crimson silk dress that dragged uselessly across the floor.

The woman carried a tray laden with dark, fresh bread in one hand, and a platter of rich cheeses and two cups of drink in the other. She smiled genuinely, the tension dropping from her shoulders in a visible wave of relief. She set her burdens on the stone table between the benches.

"Come in," the woman urged warmly. She turned her attention to the doorway. "Rusk, take a seat in the sitting room. You are dismissed for now."

The guard offered another low grunt and pulled the heavy door shut behind him, leaving the two women alone.

"I am Myrena," the woman said, taking a seat on the blue cushions.

"Venyra." She nodded slowly, keeping her guard up. Why was this woman here? Myrena must belong to Flamecleaver or one of the other Lords. She possessed the undeniable beauty of a sex slave, yet her practical clothes and confident demeanor suggested a higher status. Was she a wife? A favored concubine? Usually, captive slaves were ignored or tolerated, not invited to share a meal.

"It is always exciting when a new woman arrives," Myrena said, gesturing for Venyra to sit. "If you haven't noticed, there is a staggering abundance of men in this fortress. It makes one feel safe and secure, naturally, but the constant male energy gets quite tiring. I am so glad you are here."

Venyra sat on the edge of the opposite bench. "You are the first female I have seen since I arrived. Where are the rest of them?"

Myrena paused, her green eyes studying Venyra with a mix of curiosity and warmth. "You will find your way around soon enough. Please do not take offense to this, but I am utterly shocked it was Xavien who brought you back here. You must have done something truly impressive to catch his eye. He is normally so reticent. Eternally serious."

"Xavien?" Venyra asked.

Myrena frowned, pausing halfway to picking up her cup. "Have I heard wrong? The gossip spreading through the halls is that Lord Xavien Flamecleaver brought a woman back to the aerie. We all assumed he quickly hid you away to keep you for himself."

Venyra blinked. Xavien. She struggled to associate the harsh, imposing title of Flamecleaver with a normal given name. Suddenly, Myrena’s friendly demeanor made perfect sense. Myrena had no idea about the claiming house. She had no idea Venyra was a captive bedroom slave bought with coin. Myrena assumed Venyra was Lord Xavien’s willing, chosen consort.

Venyra shifted on the plush cushion. Her mind calculated the angles. If this woman believed she was here willingly, this was a vital opportunity. She needed critical information about the fortress layout and the best escape routes heading toward the Meridian Kingdom. She just had to play along.

"I did arrive with Lord Flamecleaver," Venyra said, offering a soft, agreeable smile. She let the misunderstanding stand.

Myrena sighed happily, taking a sip from her cup. "He is mysterious and dark, that one. I will admit, I wasn't sure his dragon could even mate. It always frightened me. I honestly thought his beast might eat anyone who tried."

Venyra’s smile faltered. Her brow furrowed in deep confusion. *His dragon?* She knew the Lords used the giant beasts in warfare. She assumed they trained and commanded them, much like a hunter controls a hound or a falcon.

"Eat his mate?" Venyra asked cautiously. "But... they just control the dragons, right?"

Myrena lowered her cup. Her warm smile faded into an expression of earnest, wide-eyed truth. She looked at Venyra as if she had just asked if the sky was blue. "They do not control them, sweetheart. They *are* dragons."

The words hit Venyra like a physical blow. "I'm not sure I understand."

"The men here are Shifters," Myrena explained gently. "It is two distinct bodies. One human, and one monstrous beast. But they share a single soul and a single mind. When you look at Lord Xavien, you are looking at the dragon."

Venyra’s breath caught in her throat. Her brain scrambled to process the staggering, terrifying revelation. The men with wings in the courtyard. Flamecleaver’s glowing amber eyes. The raw, predatory power radiating from his skin. They weren't just riders. They were monsters.

Before her mind could even begin to accept the horrific truth, a massive, explosive force slammed against the heavy wooden door.

The impact shook the stone walls. The thick timber groaned in agony. With a deafening crack, the door burst inward, the wood splintering off its iron hinges. It crashed onto the woven rug.

Xavien Flamecleaver stood in the ruined doorway. His bare chest heaved with ragged breaths. His amber eyes burned with absolute, unchecked fury. He scanned the room, his gaze locking onto Venyra.

His booming voice echoed through the space, vibrating with the rage of the beast inside him.

"Where. Is. She?"
