A Marriage of Convenience
Camilla’s fingers gripped the glossy photo paper. Her knuckles turned stark white under the dim, warm lighting of the Japanese restaurant. The quiet rustle of the paper seemed deafening, drowning out the soft, ambient melodies drifting from the hidden speakers. Her chest tightened, restricting her breath until her lungs burned.
She stared at the images spread across the low wooden table. They were undeniable. Her boyfriend of four years, Donovan, and her elder sister, Vanessa. The two people she trusted most in this world stood on a sunlit hotel balcony, locked in an intimate, passionate kiss. Donovan’s hand rested low on Vanessa’s waist, pulling her flush against him, while Vanessa’s arms draped intimately around his neck.
Camilla searched the edges of the figures, looking for blurring, pixelation, any sign of digital alteration. She wanted to believe this was a cruel prank. Vanessa always supported her. Donovan loved her. This made no sense.
"Where did you get these?" Camilla asked. Her voice cracked, barely a whisper.
Across the table sat Maximus Sinclair. He was the formidable CEO of the Sinclair Empire, a notorious workaholic, and Donovan’s older brother. He rested his elbows on the table, his dark, piercing eyes tracking her every micro-expression with cold calculation. He did not offer a comforting smile or a sympathetic gaze.
"You can verify their authenticity yourself," Maximus said, his tone smooth and detached. "Check the timestamps and GPS coordinates written on the back of each print."
Taking a halting breath, Camilla flipped the top photograph over. Crisp black ink spelled out precise dates, hours, and the exact latitude and longitude of the location. She flipped the next one. More numbers, more undeniable proof.
"Mr. Sinclair," Camilla started, struggling to force the words past the lump in her throat. She looked up at the man she had only met once at a Christmas dinner two years ago. "This revelation is... it is too overwhelming to digest at once."
A microscopic curve tugged at the corner of Maximus’s lips. It was a faint suggestion of a smile, though it lacked any real warmth. "Having doubts despite the evidence is normal," he mused. "You are welcome to have the photos forensically examined. I assure you, they are real."
Desperate to understand his motive, she gathered the photos, slid them back into their brown envelope, and pushed them away. She tucked her shaking hands into her lap. "Then tell me what you want from me. Why are you showing me this?"
Maximus did not answer right away. Instead, he raised a single hand, signaling his secretary who stood silent and rigid a few paces behind him. The secretary stepped forward and placed a thick, professional folder onto the table in front of Camilla.
She opened the cover. Her eyes widened, scanning the bold, imposing text at the top of the first page: Marriage of Convenience.
Her heart slammed against her ribs. She looked from the paper to Maximus, trying to process the absurdity of the situation. "You want to marry me?"
"Read further," Maximus instructed.
Camilla forced her eyes down the page. She skimmed past the legal jargon, her gaze snagging on a specific clause near the bottom. It detailed a temporary, strictly business-oriented arrangement. A contract with an expiration date.
"Mr. Sinclair," she said, her voice finding a shred of defiance. "I am your younger brother's girlfriend."
"Cheating brother," Maximus corrected swiftly. He didn't blink.
Camilla clutched the edge of the table. She needed to cling to a sliver of hope, no matter how fragile. "I have not confirmed this betrayal with my own eyes yet. For all I know, this entire encounter is some elaborate corporate trap. A scheme."
Maximus didn't argue. He didn't raise his voice to defend his claim. He simply reached into his suit pocket and produced a sleek, black hotel key card. He slid it across the smooth wood until it stopped inches from her hand.
Camilla stared at the small piece of plastic. "What is this?"
The secretary stepped in to explain. "It takes time to forensically verify photographs, Miss Stratton. Mr. Sinclair prefers efficiency. He has arranged for you to confirm the matter with your own eyes. Flights and accommodations have already been finalized. You will be checking into the Ritz in Los Angeles, occupying the suite directly adjacent to where Mr. Donovan and Miss Vanessa are currently staying."
Camilla felt the blood drain from her face. Donovan was supposed to be at a business conference in LA. Vanessa had told her she was in Texas, wrapping up filming for her latest project. The pieces fell into place with sickening precision.
"Let us resume our negotiations once you have witnessed the truth yourself," Maximus said. He stood up, his towering frame casting a shadow over the table, and adjusted the cuffs of his immaculate suit.
He turned toward the exit.
"Why me?" Camilla blurted out. The question tore from her throat. Maximus Sinclair had access to wealth, power, and any eligible woman on the planet. "Out of everyone in the world, why choose me?"
Maximus paused. He turned his head, glancing back at her over his shoulder. His handsome face was devoid of warmth, a mask of pure calculation.
"Business," he said.
Then, he walked out of the restaurant, leaving her alone with the photos, the contract, and the black key card.
The need for closure was a physical ache, a desperate, agonizing pull that dragged Camilla through the motions of the next few hours. She boarded the first-class flight to Los Angeles in a daze, her mind replaying the image of her sister’s arms wrapped around Donovan’s neck on an endless, torturous loop.
It was the quiet, dead hours of the night when she finally arrived at Long Beach Airport. A private car, arranged by Maximus, waited at the curb to whisk her away. She sat in the back seat, watching the city lights blur past the tinted windows. She was a thousand miles from home, propelled by a morbid need to shatter her own heart. She had to know.
The Ritz was an imposing structure of luxury and silence. Camilla checked in under the reservation Maximus provided and rode the elevator up to her floor. The plush carpet muffled her footsteps as she walked down the long corridor, stopping in front of her assigned suite. Next door was the room. Their room.
She entered her lavish suite and dropped her small bag on the floor. The space was massive, decorated in rich tones and expensive fabrics, but it felt like a prison cell. She walked over to the edge of the king-size bed and sat down.
Pulling her phone from her pocket, she opened her messages. She typed out a simple text to Donovan.
Hey, how was your day at the conference?
She hit send.
The silence in the room grew heavy. She sat there, staring at the screen, watching the minutes tick by. Five minutes. Ten minutes. Twenty minutes.
When thirty agonizing minutes passed with no response, the last frayed thread of her denial snapped. She hardened her resolve. She pushed herself off the bed, her legs feeling like lead, and grabbed her phone. She opened the camera application, making sure the video recording was ready to go.
She picked up the sleek, black key card Maximus had given her.
Stepping out into the hushed hallway, she stood before the adjacent door. Her pulse hammered against her throat, a frantic, rhythmic thud. She raised her hand and swiped the black card against the electronic lock.
A small green light flashed. The mechanism clicked.
Camilla pushed the heavy door open and slipped inside, letting it shut softly behind her. The room was submerged in darkness, the curtains drawn tight against the city lights outside. The air was cool, carrying the faint, familiar scent of expensive cologne. Donovan's cologne.
She tapped the flashlight icon on her phone, casting a sharp beam of white light into the shadows.
The beam swept across the spacious living area. It landed on a pair of scattered suitcases near the sofa. One was Donovan’s familiar silver hard-shell case. The other was a designer leather duffel bag Camilla recognized instantly. She had bought it for Vanessa last Christmas.
Her breath hitched. She moved the light toward the open bathroom door. On the marble counter, she spotted matching toiletries, a makeup bag spilling open, and two toothbrushes resting in a glass. The intimate atmosphere of the space was undeniable. They were living here, together.
The crushing weight of reality settled over her, shattering whatever illusions she had left. There was no corporate trap. Maximus hadn't lied.
She forced herself to keep moving. She needed to see the luggage tags, needed something definitive before she lost her nerve. She stepped deeper into the suite, moving toward the luggage rack positioned near the edge of the bedroom area.
Just as she reached out to inspect the designer duffel bag, a sharp hiss sliced through the quiet room.
The electronic lock on the front door engaged.
Before Camilla could react, the heavy door swung open. A harsh, blinding wash of overhead lights flooded the entire suite, instantly chasing away the shadows and rendering her phone's flashlight useless.
Footsteps sounded in the entryway. Voices echoed in the hall.
Someone had just walked through the front door.
Camilla froze, the bright lights exposing her position near the luggage rack, leaving her trapped in the open with nowhere to run.
