Welcome to the Cage
Kallie Siobhan Faye's POV
The heavy, suffocating silence inside the sleek sports car felt like a physical weight pressing down on my chest, threatening to crush my ribs. Following my forced, reluctant nod of submission to his violent threat, the immediate danger of his wrath seemed to pass, but a new, much more dangerous reality crashed over me. The adrenaline that had spiked in my veins began to settle, leaving behind a stark, hyper-awareness of my physical predicament. I realized I was still awkwardly, intimately straddling him. I was sitting right on his muscular lap, my thighs parted over his, the heat of his massive body burning straight through the thin fabric of my clothes. The position was painfully exposing. The rigid, unforgiving planes of his hard chest pressed flush against my breasts with every deep breath he took.
My heart hammered a frantic, terrified rhythm against my ribcage, the sound so loud I was certain he could hear it. I needed to get away from him. I planted my hands flat against the rock-hard muscles of his chest, bracing myself to shove off his lap and retreat to the safety of the passenger seat. But the moment I tensed my muscles to pull away, he shifted his tactics in the blink of an eye. He dropped his hand from the steering wheel. His thick, heavily veined arm snaked around my waist like a steel vice. The thick muscles in his forearm flexed and bulged as he violently tightened his grip, clamping down and locking me flush against his torso. There was zero room for escape. He held me captive against his body, forcing me to feel every inch of him.
"Let me go," I gritted out, glaring at his handsome, infuriating face.
He ignored my warning. A dark, predatory smirk curled the corners of his mouth. He leaned in, closing the microscopic distance between us. "I like our current position," he whispered seductively, his voice dropping an octave into a vibrating, gravelly rumble that sent a jolt straight to my core.
Before I could turn my face away, he dipped his head toward the crook of my neck. His warm, damp breath fanned over my exposed skin, making the fine hairs on my nape stand on end. Then, his mouth moved lower. His lips brushed the sensitive, pulsing skin of my collarbone. He parted his lips, letting his hot tongue drag across the bone. The physical sensation was a raw shock to my nervous system. A traitorous, highly unwanted shiver cascaded down my spine. The contact felt dangerously superb. The deep, primal siren call of our mate bond roared to life, attempting to override my logical hatred for him. The friction of our bodies felt intoxicating to my inner wolf. Through the layers of our clothing, I could feel the thick, hard bulge of his erection pressing firmly against the juncture of my thighs, a stark, undeniable reminder of the carnal instinct driving his actions. He was using the sheer biological gravity of our bond to enforce his dominance, manipulating my body's natural arousal to keep me compliant and trapped on his lap.
"Really, Siobhan? You let yourself be seduced by him right now?"
The sharp, mocking voice of my inner wolf, Ravena, echoed in my head like a bucket of ice water. Her disgust abruptly jolted me out of the bond's intoxicating haze and dragged me kicking and screaming back to harsh reality. The humiliation hit me like a freight train. My face burned with a fiery mix of shame and rage. I shoved my hands hard against his broad shoulders, using all my leverage and weight to break his hold. I forcefully pushed him away, scrambling clumsily off his lap and throwing myself back into the passenger seat. I pressed my spine flush against the car door, putting maximum distance between us.
"Don't ever do that again!" I snapped bitterly, my chest heaving as I wiped my collarbone with the back of my hand.
He didn't look bothered in the slightest. He merely adjusted the lapels of his designer jacket, rolling his broad shoulders to settle the fabric. A cocky, infuriating smirk played on his lips as he watched my chest rise and fall. He reached out, shifted the car back into drive, and the powerful engine roared back to life, propelling us forward up the steep, winding road.
I turned my head away, staring blankly out the tinted window to avoid looking at his smug face. I was rather certain that we would never get along. We had vastly different life perspectives, and his sheer arrogance was far too much for me to manage. Just looking at him irritated my very soul. Why did this monster have to be my mate? Was the Moon Goddess sitting up in the stars, making a cruel joke out of my tragic life?
Within minutes, the dense forest cleared, and we pulled up to the massive, wrought-iron gates of his hilltop palace. My breath hitched in my throat. This was the exact, horrific place where he had publicly humiliated and rejected me five long years ago. The memories rushed back like a tidal wave of ash and bile. The mocking laughter of his pack, the cold indifference in his eyes as he cast me aside because he thought I was nothing more than a fragile, useless mortal. The sentries standing guard recognized the Alpha King's vehicle immediately and scrambled to pull the heavy gates open. We rolled onto the sprawling estate.
The car jerked to a halt in front of the grand entrance. I didn't wait for him. I shoved my door open and stepped out, my combat boots crunching loudly on the white gravel. I tilted my head back, looking up at the towering, opulent structure that screamed of his immense wealth and tyrannical power. Making a silent, ironclad resolve, I promised myself I would not break. I needed to deeply investigate why a man who fiercely, vocally despised humans suddenly wanted me back in his inner sanctum. There was a hidden motive, a dark secret lurking behind this sudden reclamation, and I was going to uncover it.
"Do I need to drag you inside, or will you come by yourself?" he called out from the driver's side, his tone dripping with bipolar irritation.
"Coming," I murmured under my breath, falling into step a few paces behind him as we approached the grand double doors.
We walked into the cavernous main foyer. The floors were polished marble, reflecting the light from the massive crystal chandeliers hanging above. Maids and palace staff scurried out of our path, dipping their heads in deep, terrified bows as the King passed. However, their puzzled, wide-eyed expressions caught my attention. They stole quick, curious glances at me. They clearly had no idea who I was, which made sense given how hastily he had rejected me years ago without ever bothering to learn my true identity.
Before we could make it to the sweeping main staircase, a tall, stern-faced man stepped into our path, intercepting us. He walked with the heavy, precise strides of a warrior accustomed to giving orders. Judging by the sheer density of his aura and his commanding posture, I quickly deduced he was his Royal Beta.
"King," the man greeted, bowing his head in respect. Then, his sharp eyes locked onto me. He stopped in his tracks. His nose twitched slightly, taking in my scent.
"A human?" he murmured.
I kept my face perfectly blank, though a dark surge of amusement bubbled in my chest. A human. Their incredibly poor werewolf senses were laughable. They completely missed the massive, terrifying tribrid aura boiling just beneath my skin. The unmatched, volatile blood of a wolf, a vampire, and a witch coursed through my veins, masked only by my own potent magic. Let them think I was fragile. Let them underestimate me. It gave me the ultimate tactical advantage.
"Why?" the Beta asked his King, looking genuinely perplexed by the glaring contradiction standing in their royal foyer. "I thought you hated humans?"
Kaelen physically stiffened. He hated being questioned, especially by his subordinates regarding his glaring hypocrisy. I waited, eager to hear how the great Alpha King would explain this away to his second-in-command.
"Certainly, but this is a new case," Kaelen replied, his tone dripping with obvious distaste.
A new case. I bit the inside of my cheek to keep from rolling my eyes at his pathetic excuse.
"Who is she exactly to you?" Vaughn pressed, his curiosity overriding his caution.
My mate hesitated. The heavy silence stretched for a long, agonizing moment. His jaw tightened, a muscle feathering in his cheek as he considered whether to speak or keep his secrets. He looked like the words physically pained him to say. Finally, he answered the entirely unexpected.
"My mate."
Vaughn's jaw practically hit the marble floor. His eyes widened in absolute, unfiltered disbelief. He stared at me, then back at Kaelen, his mind struggling to process the revelation. "What? Your mate is a human? Is that why you rejected her?"
The Beta was digging too deep, too fast. Before he could string together another probing question about the past, my mate swiftly and aggressively cut him off.
"Don't ask me any more questions," he barked, using his harsh, vibrating Alpha tone to enforce the command. "We will talk about it later. Back to work, Vaughn."
Vaughn snapped his mouth shut. The brutal command left no room for argument or discussion. He gave a stiff nod, cast one last bewildered look in my direction, and retreated toward the administrative wing to resume his duties.
Kaelen didn't check to see if I was following. He just started walking again, his long legs eating up the distance. I hurried to keep up, our tense march continuing through the vast, opulently decorated hallways of the ground floor. We passed heavy velvet curtains, golden fixtures, and priceless art mounted on the walls.
Up ahead, lingering by a set of massive arched windows, stood a cluster of young, stunningly beautiful women. They wore scantily clad outfits—silk robes that barely covered their thighs and low-cut tops designed to display maximum cleavage. The air around them was thick with a cloying, overly perfumed scent that made my nose wrinkle in disgust. As Kaelen approached, the women immediately dipped into deep, reverent bows.
"Your Majesty," they chimed in unison.
He strode past them without so much as a glance, treating them like living furniture. But the moment his eyes looked away, the women straightened up and turned their collective attention to me. Their expressions morphed from fake reverence to murderous, scalding glares of pure judgment. They raked their eyes over my practical clothes, their manicured nails digging deep into their palms. Analyzing their possessive body language and the faint, lingering scent of his arousal masked beneath their cheap perfume, I easily deduced exactly who these painted dolls were. His kept mistresses.
"Who are you?" one of them sneered. She stepped forward, blocking my path, her eyes narrowed into hostile, venomous slits.
I stopped. I opened my mouth to deliver a cutting retort, ready to verbally put this insignificant wolf in her place. But before a single syllable could leave my lips, Kaelen’s voice echoed down the hall.
"Come on, human, don't waste my time."
The words hit the hallway like a physical slap. The mistresses gasped collectively at his incredibly degrading tone toward me. Then, vicious, triumphant smirks spread across their painted faces. They looked at me like I was dirt scraped from the bottom of their expensive heels.
I bit the inside of my cheek until I tasted the sharp tang of copper. The disrespect burned my throat. The urge to unleash my magic, to show them exactly what this pathetic "human" could do, flared hot in my chest. But I shoved the primal instinct down. I needed to thoroughly play the role of the weak, defenseless mortal for now. Let them gossip. Let them think whatever they wanted. As a tribrid with lethal power, my physical safety from a few territorial mistresses was hardly a concern. I dropped my gaze, feigning meekness, and rushed past them to catch up to him.
He led me up a grand, sweeping staircase covered in a thick red runner. We reached the third floor, a quieter, much more secluded wing of the massive palace. The thick carpets absorbed the sound of our footsteps. He came to an abrupt halt outside a set of heavy wooden double doors.
Because I was walking behind him, lost in my own strategic thoughts, my forehead nearly slammed right into his broad back due to his unexpected stop. I caught my balance just in time.
"Watch out, clumsy girl," he insulted, his voice dripping with condescension.
He slowly turned around to face me. His features contorted into a cruel, arrogant smirk. "Before we go to your new and future room, I just wanted to clarify something."
"And that is?" I asked, keeping my voice remarkably steady.
He leaned down slightly, making sure his imposing height cast a dark shadow over me. "Even if you're my mate, you don't have any rights here, understood?"
The sheer audacity of his statement sparked a defiant fire in my blood. A prisoner. He thought he was bringing me here to be a voiceless prisoner in his gilded cage. He thought he owned me. I lifted my chin, holding his dark gaze without a single flinch. I knew full well in my soul that I belonged to absolutely no one.
"No," I answered firmly.
His thick brows furrowed deeply in instant anger. The casual cruelty in his eyes sharpened into dominant fury. He closed the distance between us, stepping directly into my personal space. The air around him grew heavy, charged with the crushing weight of his Alpha aura.
"Good," he hissed, his chest heaving as he loomed over me. "You should obey what I say to you, and if you dare to defy me... I will fucking punish you."
He demanded my complete verbal submission. He stood there, unmoving, letting his suffocating aura press heavily against my lungs. The pressure was a physical force trying to bend my will. He was waiting. Refusing to back down, refusing to break eye contact, I calculated the risk. If I fought him now, here in the hallway, I would blow my cover and expose my magic. I needed to solidify my helpless facade. I needed to bide my time and plot from within the enemy's stronghold.
I forced the rebellion down my throat. Through tightly gritted teeth, I yielded a dry, reluctant, "Yes."
His rigid posture finally relaxed in sick satisfaction. He had won this tiny, meaningless battle.
He grabbed the brass handles and shoved the heavy wooden doors open, leading me inside. The bedroom was massive. It was incredibly spacious and comfortable, featuring a huge four-poster bed, lush velvet furnishings, and a large balcony overlooking the estate grounds.
"This will be your room from now on," he stated casually, gesturing vaguely at the opulent space. "My own master suite is located right next door." He pointed to a side wall connecting the two spaces. "But I am not allowing you to come over without my explicit permission."
As if I would ever willingly set foot in his room. "That would be perfectly fine," I replied in a deadpan tone.
"I'm not asking for your opinion—"
Suddenly, mid-sentence, he fell completely silent. His body went rigid, standing frozen in the middle of the plush carpet. His pupils dilated rapidly, and his dark eyes flashed a brilliant, glowing gold. The universal sign of a mind-link. Someone in the pack was urgently reaching out to him.
The golden hue faded after a few tense seconds. He blinked, his expression hardening back into an unreadable mask.
"I need to go now," he abruptly announced. "I'll send some maids to help you later."
Without giving me a second glance, he pivoted on his heel. He strode swiftly out of the room. The heavy wooden door snapped shut behind him with a resounding thud before I could even formulate a single response.
