Buried Truths Surface
A fierce anger flickered in Gideon’s eyes, burning through the numb detachment he had worn just moments ago. He watched the harsh, unforgiving comments scroll past the screen, each message validating the indifferent drivers and vilifying a bleeding child.
"She never owed me that rescue," Gideon declared, his voice hardening as he turned away from the projection to face the room. "I was her older brother. Protecting her should have been my inherent duty, not the other way around." The profound realization caught in his throat, thick and choking, refusing to let him speak further.
Startled by this sudden display of empathy, Ronan intervened. He slammed his hand against the console, leaning into Gideon’s space with an aggressive scowl. "Don't let a few minutes of footage manipulate you. Remember the immense pain she inflicted upon us. Think about what she did to you, to me, and to Bianca. Our sister is in a coma because of her."
Gideon let out a heavy, rattling sigh. The firm resolve that had just fortified his posture wavered under the intense pressure of their shared trauma. "You're right," he muttered, running a hand over his face. "But still... I will seek a reduced sentence for her. Maybe years in a cell might change her into someone better."
On the immersive screen, the relentless memory stream plunged the audience deeper into the nightmare. The looming shadow of the kidnapper swallowed Cordelia’s small, trembling frame. He slowed his pace, savoring his power over the exhausted four-year-old lying broken on the rough asphalt.
"Still hoping for a rescue?" he sneered.
Tears carved clean lines through the dirt and blood on Cordelia's cheeks. She dragged her scraped knees beneath her. "Please," she begged, her tiny voice cracking under the strain. "Take me if you have to. Just leave my brother alone."
The man responded with a cruel, mocking laugh. "Keep dreaming, brat."
He lunged forward. His large, calloused hand clamped tight around her fragile neck. He hoisted her up, lifting the four-year-old high off the ground by her throat. Cordelia’s legs kicked out in panic. Her hands clawed uselessly at his thick, unyielding wrist as her airway crushed shut. Her face flushed a deep purple. Suffocating and desperate, she snapped her jaw open and sank her small teeth deep into the meat of his forearm, biting down with every ounce of strength she had left.
The man roared in agony. He yanked his arm back, dropping her instantly.
The visual feed cut to black with a vicious jolt. The sudden shift stripped the viewers of their sight, plunging the studio into abrupt, terrifying blindness. They gasped, left dependent on the audio feed as the sound of Cordelia tumbling backward over the edge of a steep embankment filled the room. Rocks scraped against flesh. Brush snapped and tore. Then came a heavy, sickening thud, followed by wet, shallow breathing.
Through the suffocating darkness, Cordelia’s enhanced hearing reached out. It picked up the crunch of heavy boots pacing far above her broken body.
"Dammit... a fall from this height... she's done for. Better make a call." The kidnapper’s voice filtered through the audio, laced with genuine panic.
A phone’s dial tone rang out, piercing the pitch-black void with terrifying clarity.
Cynical viewers flooded the chat, eager to tear down the narrative.
[How does she hear a phone call from the bottom of a cliff?]
[The producers are doctoring this footage to make her a sympathetic victim!]
[Fake audio. No one hears that well.]
Declan quieted the restless studio with a sharp exhale. "No," he murmured, his voice carrying a strange, hollow weight that drew every eye toward him. "It isn't fake. Her hearing was exceptional." He stared at the blank, dark screen, recalling a ghost from their past. "She once heard a neighbor quarreling from blocks away. She told me she could hear a baby crying. I called the police. They found an abused infant half a mile from our house."
He drew a measured breath. He clenched his fists, knuckles turning white as bitter remembrance flooded his veins. She had a gift. She used it to save those strangers, to save Gideon. Yet, he remembered how she later weaponized that exact gift to destroy him and Bianca, using her sharp ears to twist their lives into a living hell.
A sharp, physical kick to his shin snapped Declan back to his hatred. Ronan glared at him, hissing through his teeth. "Don't go soft. Her little tumble down a hill is nothing compared to Bianca lying comatose in a hospital bed."
Declan’s features contorted into a cold mask. "I know," he stated firmly. "My pity has limits, and it stops at her."
Suddenly, a shrill, furious woman’s voice cut through the dark audio feed. She was screaming through the kidnapper's phone. "What are you doing? The target is still at the party!"
The man on the cliff cursed under his breath.
"You grabbed Gideon and his sister instead? At Gideon's birthday celebration? Are you trying to ruin everything?" The woman berated him, her voice rising in pitch with every word.
The chat froze in collective horror. The realization swept through the text.
[Wait. Who was the real target?]
[Ronan wasn't born yet. Gideon was already taken. It was Declan.]
[Declan was the intended victim!]
A massive flood of supportive messages poured in for Declan, landing like physical blows against his chest. His carefully maintained certainties about his sister began to crumble. He forced back the agonizing realization that a four-year-old girl had suffered in his exact place. 'It wasn't a trade,' he told himself, his chest heaving as he desperately chalked it up to her bad luck.
Up on the cliff, the kidnapper grumbles his excuses into the receiver. "Blame the kid. She overheard us plotting near the catering vans. Luckily, I spotted that gaudy feather clip in her hair, or she would have slipped away in the dark. Planned to knock her out and grab the other boy, but her brother complicated things."
The woman scoffed. "Any Mercer heir will do. Where are they?"
"The boy escaped," the kidnapper reported reluctantly. "The girl rolled down an embankment. I shined my light down there... I only found blood on the rocks. I think she's dead."
The chat exploded in horror over her severe blood loss.
[Blood on the rocks? How much did she lose?]
[That feather clip! Why was she wearing that?]
Ronan scoffed, folding his arms. "What awful taste. She wore that tacky clip to steal attention at Gideon's party. Her own vanity got him captured."
The viewers piled onto the sentiment, ripping into the four-year-old's supposed need for attention. They blamed her for everything, letting the toxic hate fester and multiply across the screen.
Declan, however, sat frozen in his chair. His throat went desert-dry. The memory unearthed a devastating, buried detail he had locked away for a decade. The hatred scrolling past his eyes nauseated him. Unable to remain silent amidst the vile accusations, he opened his mouth. His voice emerged like rustling paper, brittle and tearing at the edges.
"She didn't choose it," he confessed to the world, the words scraping his throat raw. "That hair clip... I deliberately put it on her."
The studio fell dead silent.
He had forced it into her hair, knowing she despised fuzzy textures. It was a petty, malicious punishment because she had ignored him to follow Gideon around all day. The piercing thought that she had worn his cruel joke without a single complaint, and that his spiteful action was the only reason the kidnapper spotted her in the dark, sliced through Declan's heavy defenses like a razor-sharp blade.
