When he leaves, I lean back in my chair and stare at the ceiling for a second, breathing through the tightness in my chest. I picture Savannah at the nurses’ station, hands moving automatically, face calm while her mind runs wild. I picture her touching her stomach in the supply room when nobody’s looking. I picture her forcing down nausea and pretending it’s coffee.
I hate not being there.
