The New Heiress

Beatrice stood frozen on the concrete, the breath trapped tight in her throat. The sheer terror radiating from Kaelen pinned her to the spot. Throughout their three years living under the same roof, she had only known him as a quiet, subservient shadow—a man who swallowed insults and kept his head down. The furious, towering predator standing over her battered son shattered that illusion into a million jagged pieces.

When the initial shock finally receded, the air rushed back into her lungs. Beatrice opened her mouth and unleashed a hysterical, ear-piercing shriek.

"Help! Somebody help us! He's murdering my son!"

Her frantic screams ripped through the plaza, acting like a blaring siren. The heavy thud of combat boots pounded against the pavement as the Aegis Group security team swarmed out from the building's entrance. A dozen men in uniform rushed the scene, their hands instinctively reaching for their belts.

Judd, the burly head guard, shoved his way through the ranks to assess the threat. He glanced at the groaning, bloodied mess on the ground, then locked eyes with Beatrice. Recognition flashed across his face. This was the company president's mother. A golden opportunity to secure his standing and kiss up to the Caldwell family had just landed right in his lap.

"Mrs. Caldwell!" Judd barked, puffing out his chest. "What's going on here?"

"Judd! Grab this animal!" Beatrice screeched, pointing a manicured finger at Kaelen. "Lock him up right now! Look what he did to my sweet boy! I want him punished!"

Judd turned a fierce glare on Kaelen. "You got a death wish, buddy? Causing trouble on Aegis turf?" He waved a meaty hand at his men. "What are you waiting for? Surround him! Beat him into submission!"

The guards closed in, drawing their black steel batons. They raised their weapons, eager to impress their boss's mother.

Before the first strike could land, the sharp, rhythmic click of high heels cut through the rising tension.

"And what exactly do you think you're doing?" a smooth, commanding voice rang out.

The aggressive crowd parted involuntarily. A stunning woman stepped forward, wearing an elegant, form-fitting silver dress that accentuated her curves. Her lips were painted a striking crimson, and her presence commanded the space. The security guards halted mid-stride, their eyes widening with unrestrained, lustful stares as they took her in.

She ignored the gawking men. Walking in a straight, unwavering line, she stopped directly in front of Kaelen.

"Who are you?" Kaelen asked. The raw fury in his eyes flickered, replaced by a guarded caution.

The woman offered a disarming smile. "Nice to meet you. I am Valeria Sinclair. Mr. Carmichael sent me here."

The mere mention of her name sent massive shockwaves through the security team. The threatening posture of the guards collapsed into panic as frantic whispers erupted among them.

"Valeria Sinclair? The Sinclair family?"

"That's the heiress... she's only twenty-two and owns half the city!"

Judd swallowed hard, the baton in his hand suddenly feeling like a death warrant. Everyone in the business world knew Valeria Sinclair. She had independently built a formidable business empire. Crossing her meant career suicide, or worse.

Unfazed by the surrounding panic, Valeria tilted her head toward Kaelen. "Please wait in my car, Mr. Vance. I will deal with this trash."

She raised a hand and snapped her fingers. The sound was sharp. Behind her, four towering bodyguards in immaculate dark suits stepped out of the shadows. They moved in perfect unison, drawing heavy, steel-core batons of their own. The terrifying, bloodthirsty aura rolling off these men screamed elite training. The Aegis guards took one look at the sheer menace radiating from the Sinclair detail and backed down in fear. Nobody dared to breathe, let alone swing a weapon.

The plaza fell silent. Kaelen did not acknowledge the standoff. He crouched down on the concrete. With steady, painstaking care, he reached out and gathered the glittering, shattered fragments of his mother's broken crystal necklace. He secured the pieces in his palm, stood up, and allowed Valeria to lead him away. The luxurious Bentley waiting at the curb swallowed them up and glided away into the city traffic.

The moment the silver car vanished from sight, Beatrice exploded.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" she screamed, turning her fury onto the security guards. She slapped Judd's arm. "Useless trash! I pay you to protect us! Why did you let them walk away?"

Judd rubbed his arm, lamenting his utter helplessness. "Mrs. Caldwell, be reasonable. That was Valeria Sinclair. There isn't a single person in this city who dares to offend her!"

"You don't dare offend her, but you're fine offending my daughter?!" Beatrice shrieked.

Before Judd could formulate an excuse, the glass doors of the Aegis Group building hissed open. Sienna and Vera stepped out, drawn by the lingering commotion.

Sienna's gaze swept the plaza and landed on Gideon. Her brother was a groaning, swollen mess on the pavement, his lips split and blood staining his designer shirt. Sienna's expression turned deadly icy.

"What happened here? Who did this?"

Beatrice spun around. The abrasive anger vanished from her face, replaced in a split second by tears. She threw herself toward Sienna, playing the ultimate innocent victim.

"Sienna! Thank god you're here!" Beatrice sobbed, gesturing wildly at Gideon's battered face. "It was that animal, Kaelen! We were just walking to the car. Kaelen dropped his ugly crystal necklace, and your sweet brother picked it up to kindly hand it back. But Kaelen went crazy! He falsely accused Gideon of trying to steal it and just started beating him without mercy! My poor boy was just trying to do the right thing!"

Sienna’s brow furrowed, a deep crease of skepticism forming between her eyes. She stared at the blood on the ground. After three years of marriage, she knew Kaelen’s temperament. He was exceptionally mild. He was the man who cooked her meals and swallowed every insult her family threw at him.

"Kaelen?" Sienna asked, her voice laced with doubt. "He doesn't just snap. What did you actually do to provoke him?"

Beatrice gasped, feigning absolute outrage at her own daughter's skepticism. "Are you calling your mother a liar?! Look at your brother!" She wheeled around and glared at the sycophantic head guard. "Tell her, Judd! You saw the whole thing!"

Judd, desperate to stay in the Caldwell family's good graces, eagerly nodded his head. "Yes, Ms. Caldwell! Your mother is telling the truth. That guy just lost his mind and assaulted your brother out of nowhere. We had to step in before he hurt your mother too."

Emboldened by the fabricated backing, Beatrice pointed a shaking finger toward the street. "He's a two-faced hypocrite, Sienna! You just divorced him, and he’s already parading around with some new whore who whisked him away in a fancy car! He planned this!"

The damning accusation echoed in Sienna's mind. Her frown deepened significantly. A dark seed of doubt firmly took root in her chest.

Was Kaelen truly capable of such cold cruelty? She wondered if he was so furious about the sudden divorce that he decided to exact his violent revenge through her vulnerable brother. It made a twisted sort of sense. If he was truly punishing her by brutalizing her family, she had to face a bitter reality. The man she had shared a home with for three years was a stranger, and she had misjudged him all along.
