Blood and Betrayal
The world slowly bled back into focus through the chaotic blur of the speeding Range Rover. The rhythmic thump of the tires against the asphalt hammered in time with the sharp, agonizing pulse in Elena’s skull. She stirred painfully awake. Her lungs burned. Every shallow intake of breath felt like drawing crushed glass down her windpipe.
She blinked against the shifting shadows of the moving car, finding herself cradled tightly in Declan’s strong arms. His broad chest provided a solid wall against her cheek. For a fractured second, the physical warmth of her husband’s embrace tricked her mind into feeling safe.
Then his deep voice shattered the illusion.
"You just had to pass out right in front of me and Cole so we'd panic and fuss over you—was that what you wanted?" Declan demanded. His tone was a punishing strike in the confined space.
Instead of displaying any genuine concern for the severe allergic reaction that had just stopped her breath and dropped her to the dining room floor, he stared down at her with cold, unyielding accusations. He stubbornly believed she had deliberately endangered her own life. In his eyes, this was nothing more than a desperate, pathetic stunt to emotionally manipulate him and their young son. His deep voice heavily laced an underlying, panicked concern with sharp, biting disdain.
Summoning the last dregs of her strength, Elena placed her palms against his tailored shirt. She physically pulled herself out of his embrace, sliding her aching body across the leather seats. She deliberately created a physical distance in the backseat to perfectly match the glacial ice expanding in her heart. She leaned her head against the cool window, fighting the tightness in her chest, and offered him a weak, incredibly bitter smile.
"Playing the victim?" she whispered, her voice a raw rasp. "Declan, are you pretending not to know I'm deathly allergic to floral scents, or did you just genuinely forget?"
From the front passenger seat, Camilla quickly pivoted to play the innocent, terrified peacemaker. She leaned over the center console, her large eyes brimming with perfectly timed fake tears. She nervously reached back, her manicured fingers clutching a bottle of chilled water.
"El, please don't be angry," Camilla pleaded softly, her voice trembling like a frightened doe. "Have some water. We're almost at the hospital."
Elena stared at the delicate hand holding the plastic bottle. It was the exact same hand that had splashed that heavy, toxic floral perfume onto her skin this morning. Refusing to tolerate the proximity of her attacker, Elena struck the woman's hand away without a microsecond of hesitation.
*Smack.*
The loud, sharp slap of skin against skin echoed violently in the car. The heavy water bottle tumbled to the floor mats.
Camilla let out a muffled gasp of shock. She instantly pulled her hand back, cradling it against her chest as if she had just been shoved into a blazing fire. She bit her lower lip, letting a single tear fall down her cheek.
But it was young Colton’s immediate reaction that truly shattered whatever was left of Elena’s maternal heart.
"Mom, why are you always so mean to Cami? I really don't like you anymore!" Colton shrieked furiously from the back corner of the seat. His small face was twisted in pure, unadulterated anger.
He aggressively scrambled away from his mother to cling to Camilla's seat. He reached out with his tiny hands, grabbing Camilla's wrist. Then, he leaned in and blew gently on her slightly reddened hand.
"Shoo shoo, Mommy's magic breath will make the ouchie go away," Colton murmured softly. He was rapidly repeating the exact same soothing, gentle words Elena had always used to miraculously comfort him whenever he scraped his knees or bumped his head.
Elena stopped breathing. Watching the tiny boy she deeply loved and almost died for eagerly comfort the exact woman who had just orchestrated her physical collapse felt like a sick, cruel joke. Her own son was giving away their special, sacred bond to a manipulative secretary. A phantom blade twisted ruthlessly deep inside Elena's chest, hollowing her out.
Above the boy's head, Camilla expertly shot Elena a fleeting, incredibly smug, and triumphant look through the rearview mirror. It was a silent victory lap. She owned the husband. She owned the son.
Declan’s expression darkened into a thunderous scowl. The tense lines of his jaw hardened as he glared at his wife. "Elena, apologize to Camilla immediately."
Stunned by the sheer absurdity of the demand, Elena let out a dry, rasping laugh. It scraped against her swollen throat. "You want me, the literal victim who couldn't breathe, to apologize to her? She's the one who triggered my allergic reaction."
Declan completely and utterly dismissed her valid defense. His eyes were flat, cold stones. "I have clearly been far too forgiving of your erratic, jealous behavior lately. Stop shifting the blame for your own childish tantrums."
Before Elena could force out another breath to defend herself, a sudden, horrifyingly sharp cramp violently gripped her lower belly. It felt like a hot iron twisting through her insides. It was a terrifying physical reminder of the fragile, secret life she carried inside her. The baby.
Elena doubled over slightly. She pressed her pale lips tightly together to hold back a whimper of pure agony. Her hand instinctively moved to shield her stomach. She swallowed the rest of her angry words, choosing to protect her baby over winning an argument with a man who had already sentenced her to guilt.
The sleek SUV finally screeched to a halt at the emergency entrance of the hospital. The tires squealed against the pavement. Before Declan even shifted into park, Elena forced the door open. She clutched her stomach defensively, using the door frame to haul herself out.
She paused for a fraction of a second, turning her head to deliver a chilling, dead-eyed glare to Camilla through the open window. It was a silent warning telling the woman to carefully watch her step.
But only seconds after her feet hit the hard pavement outside the car, her adrenaline vanished. A massive wave of dark dizziness hit her brain. The world tilted violently. Her vision tunneled into a suffocating blackness, and Elena’s legs buckled.
Panic finally, completely pierced Declan’s cold, composed facade. His stoic mask shattered into a million pieces. He lunged forward out of the vehicle, his arms shooting out. He barely caught her trembling, incredibly pale body before her head cracked against the concrete.
"Help! I need a doctor! Now!" he shouted desperately. The raw fear in his voice echoed across the quiet hospital entrance, completely stripped of his usual arrogant composure. He scooped her up effortlessly, rushing her frantically through the sliding emergency room doors.
Inside the blindingly bright trauma room, the chaotic sounds of shouting nurses and rattling medical carts drowned out the silence. The harsh fluorescent lights forced Elena to squeeze her eyes shut as they transferred her onto the cold operating table.
The attending doctor quickly ripped open a plastic package. He prepared a heavy dose of urgent steroid treatment to immediately prevent fatal respiratory failure. "Pushing epinephrine and heavy corticosteroids now," the doctor ordered loudly, stepping toward the IV line hooked to her arm.
Elena forced her heavy eyelids open. Panic surged through her veins, overriding the physical pain. The drugs. They could trigger a miscarriage. She weakly reached out, her trembling fingers wrapping tightly around the doctor's wrist to stop him from injecting the syringe.
"Doctor..." she pleaded desperately. Every syllable was a brutal battle against her closing throat. "I'm pregnant. I can't take any meds."
The doctor froze, his eyes widening in alarm. He looked down at the syringe, then back at her pale face. "Ma'am, you are experiencing severe anaphylactic shock. If we don't administer this treatment right away, your nerves will fail and you will suffocate."
"No," she wheezed, fighting with everything she had against the heavy, suffocating pull of unconsciousness dragging her down. "Just treat me with whatever's absolutely safe for the baby."
The doctor shook his head rapidly. "I cannot do that. Hospital protocol dictates we must stabilize the mother first. Your oxygen levels are dropping fast."
Elena's grip on his wrist tightened with a sudden, unnatural strength. She dug her nails into his skin. "And one more thing," she gasped, her gaze locking onto the doctor's terrified eyes. "You cannot tell my husband I'm pregnant."
"Ma'am, this is highly irregular. If something goes wrong, the hospital will be held liable—"
"I am the heiress of the Sinclair Group," Elena choked out, using her hidden, absolute authority.
The sheer weight of that name dropped the room's temperature. The doctor stiffened, his jaw dropping slightly. She leveraged her true identity to completely override the doctor's standard hospital protocol. She was the sole inheritor of the city's largest medical conglomerate. Her word was absolute law in this building.
"I assume full legal responsibility. Protect my baby," she commanded, her voice dropping to a fierce, undeniable whisper.
The doctor swallowed hard, exchanging a nervous glance with the head nurse before slowly nodding his head. He discarded the heavy steroid syringe and yelled for a safer alternative.
Having secured her child's safety, the last thread holding Elena awake snapped. She finally allowed herself to slip completely into the dark, silent void on the cold operating table.
Outside the ER, the atmosphere was thick and suffocating. Declan paced the linoleum floor. He was completely oblivious to his wife's true identity, and entirely oblivious to the high-stakes negotiation that had just taken place on the other side of the wall.
He stopped pacing and stared obsessively at the glowing red light above the double doors. He tightly clenched his large fists at his sides. The knuckles turned stark white under the fluorescent hallway lights. He desperately tried to convince his racing mind that everything was fine.
*It's just a simple, manageable allergy. She passed out from panic, not from real danger. She's overreacting. She will be perfectly fine.*
The rationalizations played on a loop in his head, but his heart hammered violently against his ribs. He couldn't shake the image of her lifeless, pale face falling toward the concrete.
Declan let out a slow, shaky breath to calm his frayed nerves. He ran a hand through his hair, then aimlessly tugged at the hem of his tailored dress shirt.
The fabric didn't feel right.
Instead of smooth cotton, his fingers met a strange, sticky dampness against his skin. The thick, wet texture sent an involuntary shiver down his spine.
He slowly lowered his gaze. He looked down at his right hand.
His eyes instantly widened in absolute, paralyzing horror.
Bright red blood heavily stained his fingertips. It coated the intricate creases of his palm, thick and fresh. He looked further down, his breath catching painfully in his throat. A massive, dark crimson stain bloomed across the pristine fabric of his expensive shirt, right where he had supported Elena's lower back and hips when he carried her out of the car.
Blood.
Elena's blood.
The sterile smell of the hospital corridor suddenly vanished, entirely replaced by the metallic scent of copper radiating from his own hands.
