The damp chill of the deep woods swallowed Maeve the moment she stepped past the tree line. Shadows draped over the underbrush, thick and humid, smelling of wet decaying wood and fresh moss. The system had not lied about the environment changing. Placing her Shelter had acted like a catalyst. The forest thrummed with a vibrant, newly awakened ecosystem, a stark contrast to the barren quiet she had first encountered.

Her boots sank into the moist soil, slick from a recent, unrecorded rain. She kept her heavy wooden pickaxe ready, marking her path with the knotted grass just as she had planned.

Soon, a cluster of grayish-white caps caught her eye. They nestled near the roots of a towering pine tree, blending into the gloom. Maeve knelt, pulling a thick, waxy broadleaf from a nearby fern to use as a physical barrier. She wrapped the rough leaf around the stem and pulled. The instant the root tore free from the soil, the exposed flesh oxidized, blooming into a vivid blue-green hue that crept across the cap like ink on wet paper.

[Jade Fungus: Native to the Jade Sea. Thick, delicious flesh. Companion species to the pine. Favorite of the Snowcrest. Highly poisonous.]

She remembered a college research trip to Yurania. Her senior had shown her a nearly identical species. To neutralize the lethal toxins, the fungus demanded extreme, sustained heat, usually deep-fried in copious amounts of oil. A single mistake during the cooking procedure meant a grueling death. Right now, she lacked fire, oil, and the necessary culinary setup to even attempt it.

Still, the memory of their rich flavor made her mouth water. She harvested seven distinct caps, using the broadleaves to shield her skin before safely tucking them away.

She brought up her map, dropping a digital pin at her coordinates. The blue line of her trail stretched back to Haven.

Moving deeper into the foliage, she spotted a massive mushroom growing directly out of a rotting, moss-covered log. It looked bizarre, like a giant, creamy-yellow orange complete with a little stem.

[Plumpcap: Native to The Falcon Federation. Delicious taste with distinctive flavor. Can be eaten raw.]

Maeve peeled off her rough gloves. She snapped off a tiny fragment of the oval cap and popped it into her mouth. Her eyes widened. It felt like a standard button mushroom on her fingers, but the moment it hit her tongue, it melted into a soft texture resembling yogurt jelly. She smacked her lips, analyzing the flavor profile. It tasted identical to mild soy sauce.

It was a perfect, much-needed savory seasoning. She harvested them all. Lacking a container, she braided sturdy grass stems and threaded fifteen of the plump caps together, stringing the makeshift necklace over her head. The gentle sway of the mushrooms against her collarbone was a comforting reminder of her growing food supply.

Pressing further into the dense woods, the foliage grew tighter. A sprawling shrub blocked her path, its branches sagging under the immense weight of deep purple, ripe berries. They looked like a hybrid of blueberries and raspberries, plump and bursting with juice. The sweet, tart scent of bruised fruit hung heavy in the air.

Picking them one by one would drain her precious daylight. Maeve swapped her pickaxe for the crude wooden shovel. Her muscles still ached from the grueling lumberjacking earlier, but she ignored the burn. She drove the dull blade into the compacted dirt, digging a wide circle around the shrub to excavate the entire plant.

[Congratulations! Survivor obtained Deepberry Bush ×1]

[Deepberry Bush: Common berry shrub. Root system damaged by rough excavation. Transplant success rate reduced by 10%]

She mentally accepted the penalty. A ten percent drop still left a high chance of survival if she planted it near her pond. She crouched by the fresh crater. Broken, deep roots remained tangled in the soil. Shrubs were resilient. If she could harvest these remaining root systems, she could propagate more back at Haven. The sediment block her Shelter sat on lacked nutrients, but the shoreline would work perfectly.

She thrust the wooden blade back into the dirt to pry up the lingering roots.

*Thud.*

The shovel struck something solid in the dirt, sending a dull vibration up the wooden shaft.

Maeve paused, brushing away the loose soil with her gloved hands. The worn brass hinges and dark wood of a hidden Wooden Chest peeked out. She dragged it free, the wood damp and smelling of old earth. With a thought, she sent it to her digital inventory. The interface flashed, stacking it neatly with the previous chest she had pulled from the pond. A small '2' hovered in the corner of the slot.

She bundled the excavated Deepberry roots, gripping them tightly. Checking her mental timer, she calculated exactly ten minutes left before she strictly needed to turn back to secure her fishing time.

Just as she prepared to pivot and retrace her knotted grass markers, her sharp vision caught a distinctive silhouette swaying in the distance. Through the gaps in the shorter trees, curved tips of bamboo brushed against the canopy.

Maeve knew bamboo’s real-world survival value. Edible shoots, drinkable sap, hollow chambers for boiling water, sturdy poles for shelter construction, woven baskets, weapons—the applications were limitless. She willingly sacrificed her allocated fishing time, pushing her pace toward the grove.

Upon breaking through the final line of brush, she skidded to a halt. The grove wasn't green. The thick stalks rising from the earth were a bizarre, striking blue-purple hue. Jagged, black streaks scarred the surfaces, resembling frozen lightning strikes.

[Congratulations! Survivor discovered Galebloom Resource Node.]

[Galebloom: Lightning-altered bamboo that is far less flexible than normal. Cannot be used for crafting or as firewood. Absolutely not recommended for construction. An important alchemical ingredient.]

Maeve sighed, the disappointment bitter. She swapped her shovel for the wooden axe. Even if it was useless for building, an alchemical ingredient held potential value. She lined up the blade and swung. Instead of a dull thud, the impact produced a sharp, almost metallic crack. The Galebloom was incredibly brittle, sending a jarring shock up her wrists. With a calculated angle, she relentlessly chopped down stalk after stalk.

Ten minutes later, she gathered ten thick stalks. She winced as she checked her primary tool. The digital durability bar of the wooden axe had dropped a point. The bizarre flora was chewing through her gear just as fast as solid timber.

She eyed the remaining grove. About four-fifths of the patch still stood. Her axe could handle the wear.

Needing a quick energy boost, she pinched a small piece of the savory Plumpcap hanging from her neck and popped it into her mouth.

Before she could raise the axe again, a faint rustling sound shattered the heavy silence.

Maeve froze. Her grip clamped down like a vise on the heavy wooden handle. She snapped her gaze toward the noise and quickly toggled her map. Nothing. Only her blue dot and the static node of the Galebloom.

Then, a dense cluster of nearby bushes shook.

No warning growl. No posturing. A vicious blue-black blur shot straight out of the foliage, hurtling directly at her face.

Muscle memory took over. Relying entirely on her ingrained college sports reflexes, Maeve dropped her center of gravity into a low, grounded stance. She twisted her hips and swung the heavy wooden axe in a clean arc, mimicking a perfect baseball bat swing.

*Smack.*

The heavy wooden blade swatted the airborne creature mid-flight. The impact sent a numb tingle straight through her palms. The creature deflected with a sickening, wet splat, slamming into a nearby tree trunk.

A tiny, bright red dot flared to life on her digital map.

Maeve didn't celebrate the hit. Keeping a safe distance, she raised her axe in a defensive guard and carefully assessed the threat on the forest floor.

It was a snake. The creature was roughly two fingers thick, its blue-black scales glistening under the dappled light, ending in a sharp, triangular head. It wasn't dead. The serpent coiled tightly upon itself, hissing furiously as it thrashed in the dirt.

Unnatural sparks crackled along its dark scales, jumping and snapping in the humid air. The sharp scent of ozone flooded the small clearing. Maeve glanced at her axe blade. Faint, smoking lightning scorch marks were deeply embedded into the wood where she had struck it. The voltage was terrifyingly high.

The system interface flashed a hostile red.

[Stormscale Hatchling: Galebloom Resource Node companion monster. Talent skills: Venom, Constrict, Electrocution. Lives in groups.]

Maeve’s eyes locked onto the final three words. *Lives in groups.*

Her heart skipped a beat. Survival instincts screamed through her veins. She hurriedly shoved the wooden axe back into her digital pack, opting for flight over a futile fight against a swarm of electrocuting serpents.

She dug her boots into the soil, preparing to sprint back down her marked trail.

Then, the ground vibrated.

A drastically louder, far more terrifying sound echoed through the trembling forest canopy. It wasn't a hiss. It was a deep, guttural rumble that shook the leaves from the branches. Trees groaned under a massive, shifting weight.

Blaring, massive system warnings flooded her holographic vision, painting the damp woods in a flashing crimson light.

[Warning! Survivor encountered Galebloom Resource Node Guardian Boss Stormscale Python.]

[Current Survivor attributes too low.]

The red text layered over her sight, frantic and damning.

Before Maeve could even pivot her feet to turn and run, a shadow eclipsed the dappled sunlight. She looked up.

She saw something that froze her in place. Hovering directly over her, blotting out the canopy above, was a massive, wide-open reptilian mouth. Fangs the size of her forearms gleamed in the dim light, dripping thickly with bright green saliva that hissed as it hit the forest floor.
