The EverMate Ball

**Rosalie**

As my heels leave the final step of the grand staircase, the suffocating tension in the foyer presses against my chest, feeling like a physical weight in the air. The atmosphere is heavy, thick with unsaid fears and looming goodbyes. My father steps forward to meet me at the bottom of the stairs. His usually composed and authoritative demeanor lies fractured, stripped away by the terrifying reality of tonight. His eyes gleam, glossy with unshed tears, as his gaze sweeps over me.

"You look beautiful, button," he whispers brokenly, his voice cracking on the final syllable. He leans in, pressing a desperate, lingering kiss to the crown of my head. I close my eyes and lean into his embrace, breathing in the familiar, comforting scent of his old spice cologne, trying to anchor myself to this fleeting moment of safety.

Before I can pull back, my mother steps forward and pulls me into a crushing, breathless hug. Her hands tremble against my back, gripping the fabric of my dress as if she is afraid I will vanish into thin air.

"Remember to mind your manners," she rambles nervously, her breath hot against my ear as she bombards me with last-minute reminders. "Keep your head down, sweetheart. Don't speak unless spoken to, and follow every single supernatural rule to the letter. You will be home in the morning. Just follow the rules." She repeats the phrases like a prayer, desperately trying to convince herself that I will survive this night intact. I force a tight-lipped smile and nod, my throat too tight to offer any verbal reassurance.

After the heartbreaking farewells, my parents reluctantly step back. The transition happens swiftly. I am officially handed over to my formal escorts for the evening: the high-ranking Lord Vander and his wife, Lady Evelina.

"You look lovely, Rosalie," Lady Evelina coos, offering a gentle, reassuring smile as she takes my hand.

"Not nearly as lovely as you, your Ladyship," I reply, dipping my chin in a respectful nod. Under normal circumstances, she is just Evelina, a dear family friend who hangs out with my mother and sister. Tonight, however, she is my shield, and the old-fashioned laws dictate formal respect.

Lord Vander clears his throat, his gaze softening as he looks at his wife. "Yes, she is most definitely the loveliest," he murmurs, pure admiration shining in his eyes. Then, his expression hardens back into a mask of political duty. "We should get going, Rosalie. Tonight is a big night. I hear King Cassian is going to make an appearance." He gestures toward the heavy front doors, ushering me away from my family. I look over my shoulder one last time to see my parents hugging each other, waving me a silent, fearful goodnight.

Stepping outside into the cool night air, my breath hitches in my throat. Pure shock roots my feet to the pavement. Waiting in our driveway is a sleek, black and silver hover carriage, a state-of-the-art TR model that mimics the sharp, aggressive angles of ancient Lamborghinis. But the luxury vehicle is not what paralyzes me.

Surrounding the carriage is an elite, heavily armed security detail consisting of twelve massive demon guards. They form a terrifying perimeter, their seven-foot-tall frames dwarfing the four armored Range Hovers flanking our transport. They wear tailored black suits that strain against their hulking, bodybuilder muscles, their unnatural purple eyes scanning the dark street with lethal intent. Razor-sharp talons rest near concealed weapons, looking sharp enough to slice through solid bone. This is a heavy military presence, a strike team ready for war, not a simple escort for a teenage girl.

Lord Vander ushers me into the plush interior of the carriage. I sink into the leather seat, my heart thudding against my ribs as the heavy doors seal shut.

"Your Excellency?" I ask quietly, my voice trembling slightly.

He hums in response, his attention fixed on his glowing HoloPhone. The device, embedded as a microchip beneath his skin, projects a crisp, holographic screen into the air above his wrist. The technological advancement of this new society remains staggering, especially with magic flowing freely back in the world.

"Why so much security?" I ask cautiously, twisting my fingers into the red satin fabric of my gown. "I have never seen you or her Ladyship travel with more than four guards. There are twelve armed demons out there."

Lord Vander swipes away a line of glowing text and meets my gaze. His expression is tight. "Actually, the extra security is for you, dear. By special order of The Oracle. It seems no expense was spared to ensure your safe arrival tonight."

The revelation drops like a lead weight in the center of the carriage. My stomach churns with profound unease. A cold sweat breaks out along the back of my neck. The Oracle is the most powerful seer in the universe, an ancient being who guides the fates of kings and empires. I cannot fathom why a deity of that magnitude would care about the safety of an insignificant human girl. What is so important about me that requires twelve demons to ensure I make it to a party? The questions spiral in my mind, feeding the terrifying anxiety clawing at my insides.

The journey across the city is a rapid blur of towering office buildings and dense forest canopies. The hover carriage glides silently toward the side of a distant mountain where the crumbling ruins of the ancient 'Hollywood' sign rest in the shadows. Built into the jagged rock face is a massive teleportation tunnel, funneled by nature's raw magic to transport objects anywhere in the world. Traveling to our destination in the Middle East via traditional hovercraft would take ten grueling hours. The tunnel cuts that journey down to nine minutes.

As we approach the gaping mouth of the cavern, the carriage slows. Through the front windshield, a swirling vortex of vibrant blue and orange lights dances in the darkness, twisting like aquatic currents in a boundless ocean. Glowing sparks burst and ripple across the magical canvas, mesmerizing and terrifying all at once.

The moment our carriage breaches the portal, the world shifts. Time outside the vehicle seems to accelerate into a blinding spin of chaotic colors, while inside the cabin, everything slows down. An anti-gravity sensation takes hold, making my stomach float. The vibrant, psychedelic colors from the magical tunnel bounce off our skin, casting eerie, shifting shadows over Lord Vander's stoic face and highlighting the robust, elegant features of Lady Evelina. I sit frozen in the back seat, captivated by the raw display of elemental power, until the luxurious swirls of color abruptly snap out of existence.

A blinding white light floods the cabin. I blink rapidly, my eyes adjusting to the sudden change. We have emerged into the breathtaking desert oasis of Zarithia, the lands once known centuries ago as Saudi Arabia. Miles of pristine white sand stretch out in every direction, reflecting the silver glow of the full moon.

The carriage speeds along a paved path that cuts through the dunes. Slowly, the barren desert transforms. Towering glass and concrete structures pierce the night sky, rising hundreds of feet into the air like an industrial mountain range. The arid sand gives way to a lush, thriving paradise.

Looming before us is the awe-inspiring Solaris Castle, the sovereign domain of King Gideon. It is an architectural marvel of the ancient world, echoing the grandeur of the old Roman Empire with a supernatural twist. Massive white columns, easily fifty feet tall, line a sweeping wrap-around porch. Colossal windows gleam against the pristine white walls.

But it is the gardens that truly steal the breath from my lungs. Breathtaking, bioluminescent tropical flora surrounds the estate. Endless rows of exotic flowers and towering trees glow in vibrant, neon hues against the dark sky, illuminating sculpted stone fountains that cascade crystal-clear water. It looks like a living, breathing painting, a thriving agricultural greenhouse born from the resurgence of magic on Earth.

Our motorcade comes to a smooth halt before a set of massive, imposing golden gates. Intricate carvings decorate the metal, depicting the hierarchy of the supernatural world. At the center of the gates, towering above the rest, are the intimidating royal Dragon Crests, wreathed in sculpted flames. The gold sparkles under the moonlight, almost appearing to writhe and shift as the gates slowly swing inward, granting us access to the royal grounds.

Stepping out of the carriage, Lady Evelina takes my arm and guides me up a plush, royal purple carpet. We pass through towering, open gold doors and step into the grand foyer. My feet glide across the pristine gold and black tiles. Every inch of the Solaris Castle screams unimaginable wealth and power.

We check in with an official attendant before being ushered into the grand ballroom. The sheer scale of the room is staggering, easily the size of a massive sports stadium. It is draped entirely in rich gold, royal purple, and deep black silks. The walls and ceilings are swathed in luxurious satin, while enormous golden chandeliers cast a warm, opulent glow over the thousands of attendees. Tables covered in dark cloths are adorned with towering golden floral centerpieces, draped in strings of real diamonds and pearls.

The vast space is dominated by a raised platform at the far end. Elevated above the sprawling crowd sit eight colossal thrones. They are intricately designed and explicitly crafted to house the great Dragon Kings, their imposing size serving as a constant reminder of who rules this world. Smaller, gilded thrones flank the sides, reserved for the leaders of the different supernatural races.

The room is packed with terrifying supernatural elites. Lord Vander and Lady Evelina immediately merge into the crowd, mingling with a group of older, formidable beings. I spot imposing werewolves and elegant, predatory vampires whose eyes flash crimson. Powerful warlocks bearing neon glowing marks across their faces stand near ethereal fae with luminescent blue eyes and shimmering wings. Dwarfs, centaurs, and human servants dressed in formal tuxedos weave through the masses, carrying silver trays filled with colorful drinks in crystal flutes.

I shrink back into the shadows, doing everything in my power to remain invisible. I keep my gaze respectfully glued to the polished floor, nervously playing with the rich satin fabric of my red gown. The scent of endless feasts and exotic cuisines drifts from the sprawling buffet tables lining the walls. My stomach emits a quiet, painful rumble. The anxiety-induced two-day fast I endured leading up to this ball is finally catching up with me, making me feel faint and dizzy, but I refuse to move toward the food. I just want to blend into the scenery and survive the night.

Suddenly, the low, steady murmurs of the thousands of attendees are abruptly silenced. A heavy ceremonial staff strikes the marble floor with a deafening *BANG! BANG! BANG!*

The sound echoes through the massive chamber, demanding absolute submission. The crowd parts instantly, leaving a wide, clear path down the center of the ballroom.

An announcer's voice booms across the room, magnified by magic. "Presenting His Royal Majesty, King Cassian, First Supreme Lord of the Silverreach lands."

The towering double doors swing open. King Cassian strides into the room, and the air leaves my lungs. He is a breathtakingly towering man, possessing a physique that looks as though it was meticulously sculpted from heaven's own fires. He easily stands six foot seven, his broad shoulders and sharp, defined cheekbones radiating lethal perfection. His short, dirty blonde hair is impeccably styled. A brilliant golden sash gleams against his tailored, sharp black garments, crossing from his right shoulder to his left hip.

His mere presence commands the space, radiating an aura that screams undeniable power. A polite, devastatingly handsome smile graces his lips, his teeth flashing white under the chandelier light. He steps forward, raising a glass filled with amber liquid, and offers a silent toast to the bowing crowd. Every creature in the room, including myself, lowers their head in reverence.

Then, in the blink of an eye, he vanishes. A blur of supernatural speed erases him from the spot, leaving empty air behind.

The display of raw, unfiltered power makes my heart race frantically against my ribs. A wave of exhaustion and sheer panic washes over me. I decide I have had enough. I turn slightly, preparing to quietly ask Evelina to be excused to the restroom so I can catch my breath in private.

Before the words can leave my mouth, a sudden, intoxicating, mouthwatering scent crashes into my senses, consuming my mind in a tidal wave of sensation. The rich, heavy aroma of warm vanilla and sweet strawberries floods my lungs. My mouth waters instantly. It is a scent so deep and alluring that it anchors my feet to the marble floor.

I glance over my shoulder to find the source and freeze in sheer terror.

King Cassian has materialized nearby. He is making a direct, purposeful path straight toward our small group.

My heart hammers against my ribs like a trapped bird beating its wings against a cage. Panic grips my throat. I quickly try to shrink down, attempting to hide my petite frame behind Evelina's taller, robust figure. I squeeze my eyes tightly shut, praying to any listening god that he walks past us. My knees tremble so hard they threaten to give out beneath the heavy fabric of my gown. A fresh blush of heat floods my cheeks as my stomach rumbles again, betraying my terror and hunger.

But the footsteps stop.

A pair of perfectly polished, expensive leather shoes step directly into my downcast line of sight. Before I can react, Evelina smoothly slips away from my desperate grasp, abandoning me to the apex predator standing before me.

"Hello, little one," a deep, sultry, earth-shattering baritone voice booms directly above me. The sheer vibration of his tone sends my stomach into a wildly fluttering frenzy, vibrating through the soles of my feet. Soft snickers ripple through the surrounding crowd. "Look at me, little one. We do not bite. Much."

Taking a sharp, trembling breath, I slowly, hesitantly raise my chin. My gaze travels up a mountain of a man, moving past the golden sash and broad chest, until I finally meet his intensely beautiful brown eyes.

The moment our gazes lock, a terrifying and mesmerizing phenomenon occurs. His brown irises instantly shift, flaring into a brilliant, sparkling, inhuman gold. I am far too entranced, too paralyzed by the raw, primal energy radiating from him, to brace myself for the single, earth-shattering word that will irrevocably alter the course of my entire life.

"MATE."
