Chapter 2 : Elena Vazquez

POV: Elena Vázquez.

My scream dies before it can escape my throat. A rough, calloused palm clamps over my mouth, cutting off my air and muffling my terror. I am jerked backward with terrifying force. My boots scrape against the asphalt as my spine collides with a wall of solid, unyielding muscle. Panic claws at my chest, wild and untamed. I thrash against the iron grip holding me captive, but my struggles are useless against his brute strength.

"Don't scream," a deep voice rumbles right against my ear. The sound is a paradox—chilling, yet carrying an odd, terrifying warmth that sinks deep into my bones and paralyzes my limbs.

I squeeze my eyes shut, my chest heaving against his restraining arm. Then, I feel it. The unmistakable, freezing circle of a metal gun barrel presses flush against the fragile skin at the base of my neck. My blood runs cold. The metallic scent of discharged gunpowder and rich, dark cologne invades my senses, cementing the reality of my nightmare.

"Good girl. I'm going to let go now, but if you make any sound..." The threat hangs in the biting night air. He does not need to finish the sentence. The promise of death is clear.

I give a frantic nod, my pulse hammering against the cold steel of the weapon resting on my skin.

His grip shifts. Strong hands clamp down on my upper arms, turning me around with ease. "Open your eyes," he orders.

I brace myself. I expect a monster. I expect a scarred, grotesque brute drenched in the blood I just saw spilled on the pavement minutes ago. I force my heavy eyelids open, preparing to face my executioner in the gloom of the alley.

My breath catches in my throat. The man standing over me is lethal, but he is devastatingly beautiful. Thick, dark hair falls in messy waves over his forehead. An unbuttoned, crisp black shirt exposes a tanned chest etched with intricate, creeping tattoos that spill outward and disappear into the fabric. Silver rings glint on the hand still gripping his weapon. But it is his eyes that trap me. They are a piercing, vivid green. Striking, mesmerizing, and dangerous.

Then, his intimidating mask slips. The killer blinks. A flash of genuine shock crosses his sharp features as his intense gaze locks onto my face. For a long, suffocating moment, neither of us moves. He looks stunned, as if he has seen a ghost wandering the dark streets of California.

"It's very disrespectful to eavesdrop," he murmurs. He steps closer, erasing the space between us. His hot breath fans across my trembling cheeks.

"I—I wasn't. Please, let me go," I stammer, the words tumbling out in a desperate, broken plea for my life.

A dark chuckle rumbles from deep within his chest. The sound is harsh, yet it reveals deep, striking dimples bracketing his mouth. Slowly, agonizingly, he lowers the gun, angling the barrel toward the asphalt, away from my neck.

He raises his free hand. A single index finger hooks under my chin, applying firm pressure, forcing my head up so I cannot look away from those intense green eyes.

"You shouldn't be out here alone," he warns.

His scanning gaze drops. I freeze as his eyes travel downward, pausing directly on my chest. My breath hitches before I realize what he is looking at. My neon diner name tag, pinned neatly to my uniform.

"Elena, huh?" he mutters. The way my name rolls off his tongue sounds like a claim, sending a fresh wave of shivers down my spine.

Then, he steps back. The sudden distance leaves me dizzy. He gives a brief, authoritative tilt of his head. A silent dismissal. I am free to go.

I do not waste a single second. I spin around and sprint. My boots pound the pavement in a frantic, uneven rhythm. I race through the freezing California night, navigating the maze of streets until the familiar, peeling exterior of my apartment building comes into view. I stumble up the concrete stairs, my hands shaking so badly I drop my keys twice before shoving them into the lock.

I throw myself inside and slam the door, twisting the deadbolt and sliding the metal chain into place. I slump against the scratched wood, sliding down until my knees hit the floor.

My heart thrashes against my ribs. The bone feels ready to splinter under the sheer force of my panic. I drag in ragged breaths, staring into the dark of my tiny living room. My legs are numb, and my throat burns from the icy air.

Did I really just survive that? Did I run away from a suffocating life of constant danger, leaving my family behind, only to be dragged back into the crosshairs of the criminal underworld in a freezing alley?

The phantom pressure of the gun barrel lingers on my neck. The killer's vivid green eyes flash in my mind, burning away the shadows of my room. The raw terror of the encounter rips away the fragile peace I built over the last twelve months. My sanctuary feels tainted. Suddenly, I am no longer on the floor of my cramped apartment. The smell of cheap paint and old carpet fades. I am pulled backward in time, sinking into the suffocating memory of the day my world shattered.

The air shifts, growing thick with the scent of aged leather, expensive cigars, and polished wood.

I step tentatively into my father's imposing study. The heavy mahogany door clicks shut behind me, sealing me inside a room that has always felt like a cage. Tomas Vázquez sits behind his massive desk. I feel a deep, unsettling knot twist in my stomach when he looks up from his paperwork.

He is smiling.

It is a rare, welcoming expression that looks wrong on his hardened, lined face. My father does not smile. He commands. He terrifies. His cartel business trips leave a trail of fear, and his presence demands obedience. This sudden warmth puts me on edge.

"Dad? You wanted to see me?" I ask, my voice small, my fingers playing nervously with the hem of my shirt. I have not seen him in a week, and his early return sparks a deep sense of dread.

"Yes. Have a seat," he gestures toward the heavy chair opposite his desk.

I perch on the edge of the leather cushion, waiting for the other shoe to drop. He does not offer a gentle transition. He does not sugarcoat the destruction of my future. He looks me in the eye and drops a bomb that stops my world from turning.

"I've arranged a marriage proposal for you," he states, his tone as casual as if he were discussing a routine supply shipment. "You'll be marrying the heir to the Del Carlo’s syndicate, Vittorio Del Carlo, come next month."

The words strike me like a physical blow. The breath leaves my lungs in a harsh rush. The room spins.

"What?" I gasp, my hands gripping the armrests to steady myself. "Dad! Everybody knows Vittorio Del Carlo is the most ruthless mafia boss! I've never even met him!"

Panic sets in. I am trembling. The Del Carlo name is bathed in blood. They are monsters among men, and Vittorio is the reigning king of their brutality.

"That is why he will be coming over for dinner this weekend. So you two can get acquainted," my father replies smoothly.

"Please, don't do this. I'm begging you. Don't make me do this," I plead, the first hot tear escaping and rolling down my cheek.

The warm, fake facade shatters instantly. His features twist into a cruel snarl.

"Shut the fuck up, Elena!" he barks. His cool brown eyes turn into blocks of ice. This is the calculating, ruthless crime boss I know. The father who views his children as disposable assets.

"You are going to marry Vittorio in return for this family's protection. Do you understand?"

Tears spill over my lashes, tracking down my cheeks in thick, unending streams. Betrayal slices deep into my chest. I am not his daughter; I am currency. A pawn to be traded to a monster to save his own skin.

"I can't," I choke out. I push myself up from the chair, a sudden, burning rebellion igniting in my blood. "I'm not going to marry a criminal!" I scream the words at him, pouring all my heartbreak and terror into the defiance.

The strike comes before I can blink.

His palm connects with my face in a vicious, ringing slap. The force snaps my head to the side. A sharp sting blooms across my cheek, quickly fading into a spreading, burning numbness. The metallic taste of blood coats my tongue. I stumble, my hand flying to my throbbing face.

Footsteps echo near the doorway. Through the blur of my tear-filled vision, I see my older brother, Ramon, step forward, his jaw tight. He moves to intervene, to shield me from our father's wrath.

Dad does not even look at him. He raises a stern hand, holding it in the air. The commanding gesture stops Ramon dead in his tracks. My protector, silenced by a single motion. Ramon lowers his head, stepping back into the shadows.

I turn my face back to the man who gave me life. I search his stone expression. I dig through the coldness in his dark eyes, desperate to find a single shred of paternal love, a hint of regret, or a flicker of warmth.

There is nothing. I find only bitter calculation and a blazing, unyielding hatred. He would sacrifice me without a second thought.

In that devastating, silent moment, the crying stops. The panic fades into a cold, hard certainty. I know exactly what I have to do.

I will not be sold to a ruthless killer I do not love. I will not become a prisoner in a golden cage, bound to Vittorio Del Carlo. Right then and there, standing in the shadows of my father's study with a stinging cheek and a broken heart, I make the choice. I am going to run away from home forever.
