The Alpha's Softness

Cressida

My brain stalled. The resemblance, once obscured by my sheer terror, now stared me right in the face. The same strong, sharp jawline. The same thick, dark curls. The same gold-amber eyes with those tiny, dangerous flecks of red buried deep in the irises.

"You're... his sister?" I choked out, my voice barely audible in the cool night air.

Sylvia chuckled, the rich sound vibrating through her broad chest. "Gamma Sylvia Thatcher, at your service, little wolf. And yes, Alpha Kaelen is my idiot younger brother."

Before I could even begin to process the weight of that information, a wave of heavy, crushing exhaustion hit me. The adrenaline that had kept me upright during my first shift suddenly evaporated, leaving my limbs feeling like lead weights. My head spun, the dark trees of the territory blurring into a dizzying smear. My knees buckled beneath me.

I braced for the hard impact of the dirt, but it never came. Sylvia caught me easily, scooping me up into her arms as if I weighed nothing at all.

"Whoa there," she said, her voice dropping into a gentle, sisterly tone. "I've got you. Your first shift takes a massive toll on the body. You need to rest."

I wiggled weakly, trying to protest, but my muscles refused to cooperate. "I can walk," I mumbled, though my head was already lolling against her shoulder.

"Sure you can, sweetheart," Sylvia said with a warm laugh, tightening her grip just enough to keep me secure without hurting me. She began walking toward the looming stone facade of the packhouse. "Just let me carry you. Consider it a perk of having a giant Gamma for a sister-in-law."

Despite the comfort of her hold, anxiety crept back into my chest. "He... he looks at me like he wants to tear me apart," I said, thinking of Kaelen's burning gaze.

"Oh, calm down, worrywart," Sylvia teased gently. "You make the exact same face Carden makes when I mess with him. Kaelen isn't glaring because he's angry. He's just intense. When I first got my mate, I was the same way. It's a protector instinct. I promise you, Kaelen wants you more than anything in this world. The stories you've heard about his brutality might have some truth to them, but he has never once harmed a member of this pack without a damn good reason."

I wanted to believe her, but the fear was a thick, heavy knot in my throat. Where was I even supposed to go? My parents wouldn't take me back, not after I shifted and revealed my bond to the Alpha. No one in the territory would dare hide me from Kaelen. I was trapped, bound to a man who terrified me.

We neared the heavy oak doors of the packhouse when the air suddenly turned ice-cold.

A massive, dark shadow stepped out from the tree line, cutting off our path. It was Varkos, Kaelen’s giant wolf. His fur was black as midnight, his shoulders easily reaching Sylvia’s chest. His eyes burned with a menacing, bloody crimson.

A low, rumbling growl vibrated through the ground, shaking the very bones in my chest. My heart rate skyrocketed, terror flooding my system all over again.

"Gamma. Sylvia. Thatcher. Unhand what is mine," Varkos growled, the Alpha command vibrating through the air, demanding submission.

I braced myself, expecting Sylvia to drop me and bow. Instead, she stood her ground, her boots planting firmly into the dirt.

"No," she said flatly.

My jaw dropped. Was she insane? She was challenging a feral Alpha wolf.

"I will not repeat myself," Varkos snarled, taking a slow, heavy step forward. His claws dug into the earth, his massive chest expanding as he prepared to spring.

"Nor will I," Sylvia snapped back, her voice dripping with annoyance rather than fear. "Stand down, horny dog. Can’t you see she’s terrified of you?"

"Stand down!" Kaelen’s Alpha voice boomed, forcing Glimmer to whine inside my mind. "Return my mate to me now, or I will rip her from your arms."

"And if you do that, what then?" Sylvia challenged, her eyes narrowing as she glared down the massive beast. "Do you think you could live with yourself if you crushed her? Would you be happy holding her in your arms as a broken pile of bones and blood, little brother?" She spat the word 'little' with deliberate mockery.

Kaelen’s wolf hesitated, his ears twitching back. "That is besides the point," he rumbled, though his stance shifted slightly, his front paws moving back. "You know I would never hurt her. Put her down."

"Besides what point?" Sylvia snarled, raising her voice. "Look at her, Kaelen! Your possessive grip alone would break her ribs right now. You put so much pressure on her during her very first night. You expect a wolf barely stronger than an Omega not to cower when you act like a savage monster? You are being unrealistic. She needs time to process all of this."

She went silent, her eyes glowing faintly as she sent him a private mind-link. Whatever she said, it hit him hard.

Varkos let out a long, frustrated sigh. Slowly, the terrifying crimson bleed in his eyes began to fade, replaced by a warm, familiar amber. The feral tension left his massive frame as Kaelen took back control.

Shifting back to his human form in a blur of motion, Kaelen stood before us, wearing only a pair of dark sweatpants. He looked exhausted, his broad shoulders slightly slumped.

"Sylv... she’s my world," he murmured, his voice cracking with a raw vulnerability that caught me off guard. He took a slow step toward us, the heat radiating off his bare skin even from a few feet away. "Baby, please. Come back to bed with me."

I drew back, burying my face into Sylvia's shirt. Glimmer spoke in my mind, telling me he was calm now, begging me to listen, but the whiplash of his shifting moods was too much to handle. My heart was still hammering against my ribs.

Sylvia sighed, patting my back gently. "Then act like she's your world, Kaelen. She isn’t going to run into your arms if she thinks you’re going to snap her neck."

Kaelen looked at me, his amber eyes filled with a deep, aching regret. He ran a hand through his messy dark hair. "If my presence is too much... I can sleep in the guest room tonight. Just let me hold you until you're safe in bed."

I hesitated, then gave a tiny, timid nod.

Sylvia carefully transferred me into Kaelen's arms. I braced myself to freeze, but his touch was incredibly gentle. He held me securely, his chest warm and solid against my side. He didn't speak a word as he carried me through the quiet hallways of the packhouse and into his grand bedroom.

The sheets were tangled and tossed onto the floor, a clear sign that he had scrambled out of bed the second he realized I was gone. He laid me down on the mattress with immense care, tucking the blanket around my shoulders.

He lingered for a moment, leaning down to press a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead. Tiny, warm sparks spread from the spot, making my wolf happy.

"Goodnight, my small Luna," he said in a low tone, his voice heavy with melancholy.

He turned and walked out, pausing at the threshold to look back at me one last time before gently closing the door.

Left alone in the massive room, a strange sense of loneliness settled over me. A quiet guilt tugged at my heart. I hadn't given him a real chance. My entire life, I had been warned to stay away from the terrifying Alpha. He was the largest, most dangerous wolf in the territory, but with me, he was trying so hard to be gentle.

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, exhausted yawn. Glimmer curled up in my mind, finally quiet. Tomorrow, I promised myself, I would try to conquer this fear.

I woke up the next morning feeling sore and stiff. A low groan escaped my lips as I rolled onto my side. My muscles, unaccustomed to the demands of a first shift, protested every single movement. I lay there for a few minutes, staring at the high ceiling, before forcing myself to stand up and face the day.

I walked over to the bathroom and turned on the shower. The steam quickly filled the space, and as I stepped under the hot water, I felt the tension in my shoulders begin to slip away. I washed my hair and scrubbed my skin, letting the warmth soak deep into my aching bones.

Once I was clean and dry, I dressed in a pair of comfortable leggings and a simple t-shirt with a panda on the front. I found my spare glasses on the nightstand and slipped them on. While shifting was supposed to correct a wolf's vision, I was still slightly farsighted. I was a bit disappointed by that, but the world around me did seem much sharper. I could hear the faint chirping of birds outside, and my sense of smell was incredibly heightened.

As I opened the bedroom door, a rich, intoxicating scent drifted down the hallway. It was Kaelen's scent—a mixture of cedarwood, rain, and raw power. The smell immediately made Glimmer feel a surge of satisfaction, urging me to follow it.

I walked quietly down the carpeted corridor. I noticed the door to the guest room was slightly ajar. Peeking inside, I saw that Kaelen wasn't in bed. The sheets were messy, thrown across the mattress in disarray.

Then, my eyes landed on something resting on the edge of the bed.

A multi-tailed punishment whip lay coiled on the gray sheets. My heart stopped in my chest, and a wave of terror washed over me. I stared at the dark leather, my mind racing with thoughts of his legendary temper.

Before I could turn and run, the bathroom door swung open.

Kaelen stepped out, shirtless and clad in dark pants and heavy boots. His broad chest and abdomen were covered in a patchwork of ancient, jagged scars. He was muscular, the definition of his torso showing the sheer physical power he possessed. He reached down, picked up the whip, and casually clipped it to a leather holster on his belt.

He caught me spying on him.

Instead of getting angry, a rich, throaty laugh rumbled from his chest.

"Oh, I see we have a peeper," he teased, his amber eyes flashing with amusement.

Panic seized me, and I bolted down the hallway toward my room. I reached the door and scrambled to lock him out, but Kaelen was too fast. He caught me, lifting me off my feet before I could even turn the lock.

"I think you need to be punished," he said playfully.

Before I could protest, his lips met mine in a soft, melting kiss. All the lingering terror from yesterday evaporated in an instant. His touch sent a warm wave of heat straight down my spine, and for the first time, Glimmer and I reached a state of perfect harmony. I truly felt like his Luna.

He pulled back, a wicked grin on his face as he easily read my shocked thoughts.

"The whip is for work," he said in a low voice, leaning close to my ear. "The other one is in the closet."

My face flushed a deep crimson, and a heated rush of arousal ran down my back. Before I could say anything, he let out another laugh and walked away, leaving me a flustered mess.

By noon, I finally gathered enough courage to follow his lingering scent downstairs.

The packhouse was quiet, though a few warriors bowed respectfully as I passed. At the bottom of the stairs, Kaelen was waiting. He wore a simple dark shirt that clung to his muscular frame, and his amber eyes glinted with warmth the moment he saw me.

"Do you want to come along, my little Luna?" he asked.

I nodded, stepping forward. He reached out and held my small hand securely in his massive, scarred one. The contrast between his dangerous reputation and his gentle touch was striking.

We walked down the steep hill toward the bustling pack village. The fresh air was bracing, and the walk was peaceful. As we approached a familiar, cozy shop at the bottom of the hill, Kaelen looked down at me.

"Do you like coffee?" he asked.

"I love coffee!" I said, my voice bright with excitement. "I’ve been going to Eli’s since I was a pup."

It felt good to talk about something normal, but a tiny, nagging worry still lingered in the back of my mind. What if his legendary temper flared in public? What if someone angered him?

Kaelen stopped walking. He turned to face me, his grip on my hand tightening slightly.

"It won't happen," he said, his voice deep and solemn.

I blinked, realizing he had heard my inner thoughts through our bond.

"I would die before I allow myself to hurt you, my Luna," Kaelen stated, each word dripping with unwavering conviction. "Please understand this. You are safe with me. Always."

The sincerity in his gaze hit me like a physical wave. The last remnants of my hesitation crumbled away, replaced by a solid, comforting warmth. He wasn't just a monster to be feared; he was my protector.

I took a deep breath, offering him a soft smile. Taking a step forward, I confidently reached for the handle of the cafe door, ready to begin my very first official date with the fearsome Alpha.
