The Scent of Mate
Kaelen
Everything in the mortal world deeply irritated me this morning. The bright sunlight filtering through my bedroom window, the obnoxious singing of the birds, and the faint, irritating giggles of unmated females vying for my attention down in the packhouse all grated against my nerves. They existed in their own oblivious, sickening happiness, completely ignorant of the war raging beneath my skin. Varkos, my inner wolf, paced relentlessly in the dark corners of my mind, his claws tearing at my sanity.
Two hundred agonizing, blood-soaked years. That was how long Varkos and I had been ruthlessly cursed to walk this earth without a destined mate. Two centuries of wandering as a hollowed-out king, missing the other half of our twisted puzzle. This unending, eternal loneliness did not make me pitiful; it made us unconsolably bloodthirsty. It fueled my constant, roaring rage and forged me into a wrathful but fiercely protective Alpha who ruled his lands with an unforgiving iron fist.
I knew exactly why the Moon Goddess had cursed me to suffer the fate of eternal loneliness while everyone around me found joy. It was the heavy, eternal price I paid for a single night of blasphemy long ago. During a Harvest Moon—the one sacred night where wolves were most likely to meet their fated mates—I had explicitly and violently rejected her sacred laws. I stood before my pack, spat on the concept of destiny, and allowed Varkos to indulge in unparalleled slaughter instead.
For that supreme arrogance, I was punished. To be an Alpha with no Luna was sheer torture. Every day I protected this pack with my immense might, and every night I returned to a cold, empty bed. No pups. No soft words. Over the decades, the Grand Council of Alphas had repeatedly intervened, crowding my office with their meddling faces. They constantly advised me to just take an unmated female or marry a formally mated widow if I desperately needed an experienced Luna to stabilize my volatile temper.
*Never,* Varkos had shaken my very bones with a monstrous growl back then, nearly taking over to hunt down the true mate we were told we would never receive. I would rather rot than mark a substitute. If the Goddess had made a female specifically for me, what would happen to her if she finally found me, only to discover I had settled for another?
I shoved the agonizing thoughts aside and got out of bed, the floorboards groaning under my massive weight. I pulled a hoodie over my shirtless torso and slipped on a pair of loose shorts. I did not bother with underwear; I fully expected to shift today, and there was no point in ruining extra clothing when my bones inevitably shattered and reformed into my beast.
Before leaving my room, I opened my heavy oak closet and unholstered my punishment whip. It was not a tool for pleasure. It was thick, braided leather interwoven with silver, designed to keep prisoners in line and slice through supernatural healing. I clipped the custom holster to my belt, the familiar, heavy weight grounding my violent temper. Something needed to die today, and I knew exactly who it was going to be.
My brutal duty called me to Zenith, our maximum-security supernatural prison. Twenty-one years ago, there was a devastating attack that eradicated the entire FrostMoon Pack. It was a brutal tragedy that had cost two hundred and eighty-three innocent wolf lives. Men, women, and pups were burned alive in their own homes. Alpha Horace had been viciously skinned. We knew human Headhunters—illegal vigilantes who hunted shifters for sport—were responsible. They were a plague on the tense, fragile treaty that had kept our kind hidden from the human masses since the wars of 1607. And today, thanks to our border patrols, we had a human female in custody who lived a mere twenty miles from the FrostMoon border.
I walked out the front doors of the packhouse, stripping off my hoodie and shorts right there on the porch. I stood completely naked in the morning air, fully prepared to shift and run to Zenith.
"Alpha, there’s been more reports of Rogues in the area," Beta Carden said, leaning against the porch railing. He took a slow sip of his black coffee, entirely unfazed by my nakedness. None of us cared; we were shifters, and our clothes did not transform with us.
"If they do not submit, kill them," I growled, my voice rough and rumbling with impending power. "If they have nothing to hide, they have nothing to fear."
Before he could offer another word, I let Varkos surge forward. My bones cracked, my muscles tearing and knitting together in a violent symphony of pain and power, melding my six-foot-seven human frame into a colossal, black-furred monster of destruction. I launched myself into the woods, running at full speed down the well-worn dirt path toward Zenith. The wind rushed against my fur, carrying the heavy scent of an impending storm. The weather report had predicted a massive downpour, and the heavy, electric charge in the air confirmed it. The Goddess always tuned us in with nature, even if she despised me.
Running through the territory as a massive beast always struck fear into the hearts of the pack members, but they had nothing to worry about. As long as they did their jobs and kept out of my way, I did not care. They were free to be nauseatingly happy while I suffocated in my silent rage for the wolves we had lost.
I broke through the tree line as the sun fully rose, the blinding light glaring off the low, unassuming perimeter fence of Zenith. It was the largest supernatural prison on this side of the continent, housing the worst scum alive. The fence did not need to be tall or manned with sniper rifles; it was guarded by my ruthless warriors, and its isolation in the deep southern woods of Kennessee made escape impossible.
I let out a deafening, earth-shaking growl to announce my arrival, ensuring every guard knew their Alpha was present. I reached the entrance, shifted seamlessly back into my human form, and pulled my clothes back on before stepping inside.
The air inside the facility was incredibly thick, saturated with the sterile stench of industrial cleaner and the sour, unmistakable odor of pure fear. I marched down the damp corridors, stopping at holding cells to force answers out of captured Rogues while I waited for the warden. I found a meek, low-ranking kid who had run all the way from West Kennesaw after his Rogue parents were slaughtered. I absorbed his story, verifying his truth, and moved on.
"Alpha Kaelen," my guard said, his voice dropping into deep submission as he approached. He kept his eyes locked on the floor, handing me a manila folder. "We have confirmed the female in cell 201 knows of FrostMoon Pack’s fate. Her driver’s license puts her right next to their border."
I snatched the file and stalked toward her cell. It had been freshly cleaned with new linen, a luxury she did not deserve. I unclipped my heavy punishment whip from my belt, letting the long leather tail uncoil and drag against the concrete floor.
"Talk," I commanded in my heavy, authoritative Alpha voice. I laced the word with thick supernatural power, utilizing a tone that would instantly bring any wolf to their knees, forcing them to bare their throat in absolute submission.
But the blonde woman locked inside was human, and the compulsion slid right off her. She sat on the edge of her cot, looking to be in her late thirties. Instead of cowering before my towering frame, she stared at me with deep brown eyes that held absolutely nothing but pure disgust for my kind.
She sneered defiantly, curling her lip. "Go fuck yourself."
*Whip that bitch,* Varkos roared in my mind, his dark, venomous urging vibrating against my skull.
I complied without a single hesitation. I swung my arm back and brought the heavy leather crashing down across her body. The whip cracked like thunder inside the small cell, instantly slicing through her clothes and tearing her skin open. She screamed, but the sound only fueled my insatiable bloodlust. For two straight hours, I whipped her relentlessly. The leather bit into her flesh over and over, painting the concrete walls in a violent spray of crimson. Most humans would have passed out or begged for mercy within the first ten minutes, but she remained a resilient, unbroken ball of spite. With every lash, she spat profanities, her prejudice acting as a shield against the agonizing pain.
She slumped against the wall, her clothes shredded and soaked in her own blood. She stared up at me, gasping for air.
"I wish I could have been there when they killed those fuckers," she seethed between desperate, wet gasps of pain.
I stopped. A cold, dead calm washed over my burning rage. The interrogation was over. She had sealed her fate.
"Well, you get a front row seat to see what we do to Headhunters," I replied coldly, my voice devoid of any mercy.
Without a second thought, I pulled off my hoodie, tossing it onto the blood-slicked floor. I unbuckled my belt and stripped off my shorts, standing completely naked in the center of the cell. I did not care about the guards watching from the corridor. I completely yielded control to Varkos.
My bones shattered, my spine elongating as my massive, merciless black wolf erupted from human flesh. I towered over her, my shadow blotting out the overhead light. Before she could even process the true horror of her situation, Varkos lunged. My jaws clamped down on her shoulder, immense pressure crushing her bones instantly. I planted my massive paws on her torso and ripped her arm violently from its socket. Blood erupted in a hot geyser, coating my muzzle. I did not stop. I let my towering wolf tear her apart limb from limb, snapping ribs and shredding flesh, executing her as a grim, bloody offering of closure for the surviving victims of the FrostMoon massacre.
Just as the slaughter concluded and I dropped her severed leg onto the concrete, a sound pierced the heavy silence of the prison.
It was a faint scream, filtering in through the high, barred windows. It was immediately followed by an unfamiliar, awkward, and challenging howl that echoed through the night air.
My blood-soaked ears swiveled. The sound was weak, yet it carried the unmistakable cadence of a territorial challenge. I instantly suspected that a brazen Rogue or an invading Omega scout from the pack that had bothered us yesterday had dared to breach my sovereign territory. In the ecstasy of their newfound power, some scentless, worthless wolf thought they could prance around the run trail like they owned the place.
The absolute, fucking nerve.
Consumed by seething hatred and intense territorial aggression, I bolted out of the open cell, my massive paws leaving bloody prints down the corridor. I burst through the front exit into the cool evening air, my 6'7 frame remaining in its monstrous wolf form. I bounded toward the run trail with incredible speed, the muscles in my hind legs propelling me forward in massive, ground-eating strides. I was determined to paint my borders with this foolish intruder's blood. Everyone who saw the aftermath would tremble and know that I was the undisputed ruler of these lands.
*Where are you, little pup?* I spat into the chilling air, a deep, rumbling snarl vibrating in my chest. My sharp teeth were fully bared, still dripping with the human’s blood, primed for a brutal kill. I roared my most deathly rumbles to declare my absolute authority, practically galloping through the underbrush.
I slowed my sprint to a measured, deadly trot as I approached the run trail. I could tell I was close. I stopped by a large, ancient cedar tree to aggressively track the path, burying my wet nose into the earth.
But the scent that suddenly hit my senses completely shattered my overwhelming rage.
I froze. The snarl died in my throat. My massive body went rigid, every muscle locking into place. I inhaled deeply, pulling the scent past my olfactory glands, trying to process the impossible information.
It was cedar. It was the rich, earthy scent of pines and ancient oak trees. But woven perfectly through that deep woodland musk was the intoxicating, delicate, flawless hint of cherry lemonade.
My mate.
A massive rush of sheer euphoria crashed over me, hitting with the force of a falling mountain. It was immediately followed by a deep, painful longing that gripped my lungs, paralyzing me in my tracks. Just a single sniff of her lingering scent was enough to complete my broken soul. It hit my brain like the purest drug, instantly flooding my mind with vivid, blinding visions of a peaceful future I had been entirely denied for centuries. I saw a house. I saw pups. I felt the unconditional compassion and love radiating from a Luna who would finally balance the monster within me. I finally understood why the Goddess had made me wait. If I had found her during my arrogant youth, I would have been a piece of shit. I would not have appreciated her. She was perfect, and her scent was a rush of euphoria that rewired my very existence.
I circled the cedar tree like an absolute idiot, looking up into the branches as if she might have climbed it.
Before I could regain my composure, Varkos violently seized control. My inner beast was totally overcome by an intense, possessive hunger that dwarfed my own. My body lost all rationality.
*You smell delectable, I could just eat you,* Varkos growled deeply in our shared consciousness, his voice vibrating with a dark, obsessive reverence. He licked our bloody muzzle in pure anticipation, the taste of the execution entirely forgotten. *She is absolutely perfect…* he chuckled to me. *mmmm…* he growled deeply, his massive chest rumbling. *I can taste you.*
We hungered for her touch, her face, her absolute presence. I fought Varkos for control, barely managing to pull us back from the brink of pure madness. I marked the strongest smelling spot by the tree so I could find it later, determining that I needed to track her path. I had already made up my mind. She was mine. Varkos wanted her, I wanted her, and I boiled with lethal rage at the mere idea of someone else finding her out here and convincing her to leave with them.
Just then, a sudden, booming crack of thunder shook the very foundation of the earth. The sky split open, and a heavy sheet of freezing rain dumped over the forest.
The torrential downpour snapped me out of my trance. The icy water plastered my thick black fur to my skin, but worse, it violently threatened to wash away her precious scent. I scrambled forward, throwing my nose to the ground, frantically trying to hold onto the delicate thread of cherry lemonade as the mud and water rapidly diluted it. I ran in one direction, realizing the scent was fading, and mentally screamed at my own stupidity before turning around.
I filtered out the smell of wet pine needles and ozone, desperately searching for her. I found the cherry lemonade again, but this time, a faint, distinct metallic odor kept it anchored to the wet soil.
Blood.
I stopped dead in my tracks. The scent of her fresh blood hit my tongue, sharp and unmistakable.
She was injured. The clumsy trail, the erratic path zigzagging away from the trail—she wasn't challenging me. She was desperately trying to lose me in the complex suburban labyrinth of the pack lands. She was hiding in the lower-ranked housing district, bleeding, terrified out of her mind.
A fierce, suffocating panic completely replaced my previous bloodlust. My heart hammered against my ribs with terrifying violence. The realization slammed into me with sickening force. The faint scream. The awkward howl. She had shifted clumsily, screaming in pain, and I had responded by projecting my most deathly, enraged Alpha roars directly at her. I had announced to the entire forest that I was going to tear her apart.
I had terrified my own mate.
I threw my heavy head back and let out a resounding, powerful howl, pouring every ounce of my desperation into the sound. I desperately tried to assure her I meant no harm, pleading with her to stop running.
I raced blindly into the freezing storm, my massive paws tearing up the muddy earth as I charged toward the distant lights of the housing district. The cruel irony of the night was glaringly, sickeningly obvious as I tore through the wet brambles. I had marched out here primed for a brutal execution, ready to mercilessly slaughter an enemy. And now, I found myself desperately tracking my mate’s fresh blood through a torrential downpour, utterly terrified for her fragile safety.
