Hacking the Truth

"The diamond necklace is missing!"

The shop assistant’s frantic, high-pitched scream stopped everyone in their tracks. The quiet elegance of the luxury boutique shattered as customers and staff froze, turning their heads toward the jewelry counter. The assistant stood behind the glass display, her face pale, thrusting her finger directly at Marcella.

Roland Mercer, the store manager, rushed over upon hearing the commotion. "What happened? The necklace was just placed on the counter. How could it go missing?"

"It was... it was the necklace that she wanted to try on just a moment ago!" the shop assistant stammered, keeping her shaking finger aimed at the teenager.

Before anyone else could speak, Greta Falk seized the perfect opportunity. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the polished marble floor. "How do you raise your kids, Mrs. Vance? Even if she liked the necklace, she should not have stolen it!"

The surrounding shop assistants shifted their suspicious gazes toward Marcella. Though there was no physical evidence proving she stole the jewelry, she stood out as the prime suspect. Sylvia had just loudly refused to buy the expensive piece for her, providing a clear motive in the eyes of the onlookers.

Greta crossed her arms, raising her voice to ensure everyone in the boutique could hear her. "She is doing something illegal at such a young age. Do you know how to educate your child, Mrs. Vance? Well, I suppose that is expected. After all, she is a convicted criminal who just returned from a juvenile detention center. She is a natural-born thief."

The shop assistants and Roland Mercer exchanged serious looks. The atmosphere grew heavy with accusation.

A few feet away, Dexter Blair observed the unfolding drama with curious eyes.

When Sylvia noticed the headmaster of Pinnacle Academy watching them, panic gripped her chest. She was desperate to preserve her family's dignity in front of the man who controlled the educational sphere of the city. Odette was enrolled in Pinnacle’s elite class. If Dexter believed the Vances raised common thieves, Odette’s pristine reputation would suffer. Without a second thought, Sylvia turned on her own daughter.

"Marcella, return the necklace right now!" Sylvia hissed, stepping forward with her hand raised, driven by a sudden urge to slap the girl across the face.

Dexter spoke up, his calm voice cutting through the tension. "You cannot accuse someone without evidence. There are security cameras in the shop. You can just check the surveillance footage."

Sylvia forced her hand down upon hearing Dexter's intervention. She inhaled a deep breath, trying her best to remain composed and show the headmaster she could handle family disputes rationally. Still, she glared at Marcella with pure venom.

"Admit your mistake now!" Sylvia demanded, her tone clipped and harsh. "You can still amend this if you return the necklace immediately. If the shop calls the police after checking the surveillance footage, I will not help you avoid a public arrest!"

Marcella stood her ground. Her face remained a mask of icy indifference. She met her mother's furious gaze without flinching. "I did not steal the necklace. I have no fear of them checking the security cameras."

Sylvia gritted her teeth. "Why are you so disobedient?"

Greta’s smile deepened, relishing the chaos. "It seems you are not going to admit your crime until it is too late! You are the only one in the shop who had the motive. Who else would steal the necklace apart from you?"

Greta felt a surge of triumph. She had made the right choice to go shopping today. Because of this incident, Dexter Blair would form a terrible impression of the Vance family. In the past, Odette had always outshone her own daughter, but this scandal would ensure that never happened again.

"Are you going to keep embarrassing yourself here?" Sylvia snapped at Marcella. She did not want the staff to check the cameras. She felt certain Marcella had stolen the jewelry. If the girl simply returned it now, they would suffer minor humiliation. If the staff checked the cameras and proved the theft, the police would step in. School started soon. Sylvia needed to bribe a private academy to accept Marcella in two days to protect her own social standing. No institution would accept a young girl with a criminal record caught stealing diamonds on tape.

The more Sylvia thought about her ruined plans, the angrier she felt.

Greta stepped closer, pretending to play the peacemaker. "Oh, Mrs. Vance. Do not be too angry. You just have to educate your child properly. Marcella was not evil from birth. If you used your free time to teach your daughter how to be a good person instead of attending social events all day, she would not turn out like this."

Sylvia pushed Greta’s hand away. "Do not interfere in this!"

Sylvia turned back to Marcella, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "If you admit your mistakes right now, I will pretend this never happened. But if you insist on behaving badly, I will wash my hands of you. The Vance family does not want a terrible daughter like you!"

Marcella’s expression remained unreadable. "Do you not understand English? I told you that I did not steal it."

Her calm defiance made Sylvia tremble with rage. "You are not going to admit it? Fine! Let us check the surveillance footage then!"

Roland Mercer sent a staff member to the back office. The showroom fell into a tense silence as everyone waited. A few minutes later, the staff member jogged back onto the floor, looking panicked.

"Mr. Mercer, the cameras stopped working. The hard drive in the security room suffered a sudden malfunction. We cannot check any footage from this morning."

Roland frowned, worry lines creasing his forehead. "Why did this happen? Are the technicians fixing it?"

"They are looking at it now, sir. But the hard drive is corrupted. Even if they fix the camera feed, the morning's footage is lost."

Greta let out a loud, mocking laugh. "So, there is no evidence now? How convenient! It looks like someone will get away with her crime."

"What do you mean by no evidence?" Marcella asked, turning her cold gaze toward Greta.

Ignoring her mother's furious demands to stop embarrassing them, Marcella reached into her pocket and pulled out her smartphone. It was an outdated, slow model she used before she entered the juvenile detention center. The screen was small, and the casing looked battered. To anyone else, the device was useless junk.

"Why did you take out your phone?" Sylvia roared, her patience snapping. "Have you not embarrassed yourself enough?"

Marcella ignored her mother. She held the old phone with both hands. Her thumbs flew across the cracked screen with precision. Despite the phone's slow processing speed, she bypassed the jewelry boutique’s local network security. Lines of code scrolled across the small display. She hacked into the store's mainframe, locating the damaged sectors of the security hard drive. The files were corrupted and fragmented, but repairing them took mere seconds for someone of her caliber. She isolated the broken data, rebuilt the corrupted video files, and restored the morning's surveillance feed. The entire process took her less than two minutes.

Marcella looked up from the screen. She walked over and handed the phone to a stunned Roland.

"What is this?" Roland asked, taking the device cautiously.

He stared at the screen. His jaw dropped. "Is this... isn't this the footage from our store's cameras?"

The staff, Sylvia, and Greta surrounded Roland, trying to get a look at the video. Greta stared at the others in shock. A sudden sense of dread washed over her. She refused to believe a delinquent teenager could pull deleted security footage out of thin air. After hesitating for a moment, she leaned in closer to watch the screen.

The video started playing from the exact moment Marcella and Sylvia walked into the boutique.

Roland held the phone steady, watching the playback with intense focus. The high-definition footage showed the shop assistant holding the diamond necklace. The assistant turned away to greet another customer and carelessly placed the expensive jewelry on the edge of the glass counter, right next to a narrow gap between two display cases.

A few seconds later, Greta Falk appeared in the frame. Another staff member was attending to her. Greta stepped backward without looking and bumped hard into the display counter. The sudden impact shook the glass. The diamond necklace slid across the smooth surface and dropped straight into the hidden crevice between the two heavy counters, getting stuck deep inside the gap.

The video ended.

Greta’s face drained of color. She stood frozen, embarrassed as the truth sank in.

Sylvia froze in shock, her face burning with humiliation. She had attacked her own daughter, threatened to abandon her, and made a massive scene in front of Dexter Blair. She realized her baseless accusations had made her look foolish. She needed to save her own image before the headmaster judged her any further.

"Move the heavy counters away!" Roland ordered his staff.

Two men rushed forward. They grabbed the edges of the thick glass displays and pulled them apart. There, wedged in the dark corner on the floor, sat the missing diamond necklace.

The shop assistant turned pale and bowed her head. "I am so sorry. I did not realize it fell..."

"Be careful next time!" Roland warned. He let out a long sigh of relief. He was thankful he had not accused Marcella of stealing the jewelry. If he had, the Vance family could have sued the boutique for framing a customer.

Greta, desperate to salvage her pride after being publicly humiliated, pointed a trembling finger at the phone. "How did she get the surveillance footage of the shop? That has to be fake! She faked it!"

Sylvia seized the chance to shift the blame onto Greta. "That is the real surveillance footage. The position fits the angle of the shop cameras perfectly. How could she fake video evidence in such a short time? You bumped into the counter and caused this mess, Greta."

While the two women bickered, Dexter Blair ignored them. He kept his eyes fixed on Marcella in awe. He approached the teenager, his expression filled with admiration. He was the only person in the shop who truly understood the magnitude of what she had just done. Roland had clearly stated the hard drive was corrupted and the footage was lost. Marcella did not just download a video. She hacked into a secure commercial network, found the system bug, repaired the corrupted data, and retrieved the lost files using an outdated smartphone in under two minutes.

Dexter knew the tech industry well. He knew less than ten elite hackers in all of Dunwick who possessed that level of genius intelligence.

"You are brilliant for such a young girl," Dexter exclaimed, stopping in front of her. "How did you find the surveillance footage in such a short period? Have you learned how to hack before this?"

Marcella looked at the prestigious headmaster calmly, unfazed by his intense scrutiny. "It was a trivial matter."

She did not offer any further explanation. Instead, she turned her sharp, intimidating gaze toward Greta. The wealthy woman shrank back, trembling slightly under the teenager's cold stare.

Marcella stepped forward. "Apologize to me now."
