Exile and Chains
Before Luna Isolde could even form a single syllable to counter Nyssa’s scathing accusation, a deafening roar severed the suffocating tension in the room.
"That is enough, Nyssa!"
Alpha Garrick’s command hit like a physical blow. The force of his booming voice rattled the glass in the tall windowpanes and sent a shockwave of terrifying dominance through the heavy air. He surged to his feet, casting an oppressive shadow across the surface of his mahogany desk. He had no interest in her pain, her heartbreak, or her grievances over the mate bond. He only cared about submission, and her refusal to bow was a direct threat to his reign.
"I will not tolerate this defiance under my roof," Garrick snarled. His chest heaved with barely contained fury as he rounded the desk, his heavy boots thudding against the floorboards. "If you refuse to stand with us obediently as a family, then you will stand alone. We carry the weight of this pack on our shoulders. We bleed and sacrifice for the greater good of Grimwood. If the price of preserving our unity is for you to be cast aside, then so be it."
The cruelty in his tone was deliberate. He embraced it, wielding his authority like a weapon designed to crush her.
"Alpha, please!" Beta Vance broke rank. Her father instinctively stepped forward, his hands raised in a trembling gesture of surrender. The fight had drained right out of the older wolf. His voice broke into a ragged rasp as he begged the man he had served his entire life. "Show her mercy. She is hurting. Please, Alpha, I beg you, spare my daughter."
Garrick did not even turn his head. He leveled a single, lethal glare at his Beta, freezing the older man in his tracks.
"Silence, Vance," Garrick hissed without an ounce of pity. "I am sick of her insolence. We bear heavy burdens to keep this pack strong, yet she refuses to see a single inch beyond her own selfish misery."
Garrick turned his calculating eyes back to Nyssa. The furious fire in his gaze cooled into something far more manipulative and sharp. He paced closer, stopping just inches from where she stood. The imposing Alpha loomed over her.
"You think you can just walk away from us?" Garrick asked, his voice dropping into a menacing register. "You will not resign your position. You will not run away and hide from your duties. You will continue your work right here in the pack house."
He let the words hang in the air, ensuring every person in the room understood the invisible chains he was wrapping around her throat.
"You will show respect to me and to the Luna as your leaders," Garrick decreed, his tone rigid and unforgiving. "And from this day forward, you are no longer part of the Beta family. You are stripped of your title and your bloodline. You are nothing but a common worker."
A horrified stillness swallowed the office. The silence rang loud in Nyssa's ears, deafening in its finality.
To her left, Vance and Corinne crumbled. They looked shattered, ruined by a single sentence from their leader. It was as though the stone floor had cracked open and swallowed their world. Vance dropped his chin to his chest, defeated, unable to protect his own blood.
But Nyssa did not flinch. She did not waver for a single second.
She stared right back into Garrick’s dark eyes and saw the naked greed hiding beneath his self-righteous anger. She knew exactly why he refused to accept her resignation. This had nothing to do with duty or pack unity. He wanted her connections. He craved the alliances and diplomatic ties she had painstakingly built during her years at Wolfe school. Those relationships with rival Alphas, foreign diplomats, and powerful trading merchants were the only key Garrick had to elevate Grimwood’s standing.
He was chaining her to this toxic place with the heavy iron collar of obligation. He demanded a hollow respect born out of fear and rigid hierarchy because he needed her to keep the pack's political lifeblood flowing.
Fine.
Nyssa mentally accepted the challenge. A cold shield snapped into place over her bruised heart. She would play his sick game. She would smile her diplomatic smile when necessary. She would bow obediently when the hierarchy required it. But she set a firm limit in her mind. One month. She would give them exactly thirty days of her labor to transition her files. After that, official permission or not, she would leave this treacherous territory behind forever. She would gladly become a rogue rather than spend the rest of her life suffocating in this cage.
A frantic hand clamped onto her stiff arm.
"Nyssa, please," a voice shattered the quiet.
Nyssa looked down. Tears streamed heavily down her mother’s pale cheeks. Corinne clung to her sleeve, clutching the fabric in desperation. The older woman’s hands shook with panic, her eyes wide with fear.
"Don’t do this," Corinne begged, her voice hitching with hysterical sobs. "Just apologize to the Alpha. Tell him you were wrong, and this will all be over. Please, I am begging you. Submit to him. Save our family."
Nyssa stared at the weeping woman. The world seemed to slow down. She studied the lines on the woman's face, the terrified plea in her eyes. Then, a harsh, precise realization clicked into place within Nyssa's mind.
No. This was not her mother anymore.
This was just Corinne, the Beta female. This was a woman who pledged unconditional loyalty to her Alpha long before she considered the safety, sanity, or happiness of her own child. Corinne was not trying to save Nyssa from pain. Corinne was trying to save her own comfortable position in the pack hierarchy. She would sacrifice her daughter's dignity to maintain the status quo.
That harsh realization cut deeper than any physical blade. It sliced right through the lingering bonds of her childhood, severing the last emotional tether she had to this family.
Nyssa gently but firmly peeled Corinne’s shaking fingers off her arm. She let the woman’s hand drop to her side.
She turned her gaze back to Alpha Garrick. Her eyes were dry. Her posture remained steady. The storm inside her chest had settled into an unwavering, icy calm.
"I will leave the Beta household immediately," Nyssa stated. Her melodic voice carried a quiet, terrifying strength. It echoed off the mahogany walls with unyielding finality. "I will pack my belongings and take residence in the abandoned house at the edge of the territory."
Garrick narrowed his eyes, clearly unsettled by her lack of tears and submission.
"I will continue my diplomatic work in the pack house, as you have commanded," she continued, holding his gaze without a shred of fear. "And I will show the exact level of respect you demand, Alpha."
She paused, letting the silence stretch for a fraction of a second, cementing her next words into the history of Grimwood.
"But from this day forward, I accept your terms. I am no longer part of the Beta family."
Without waiting for a dismissal, Nyssa turned gracefully on her heel. She kept her spine straight and her chin held high as she walked out of the oppressive room.
Her steady footsteps echoed loudly against the cold stone floor of the hallway. Each sharp clack of her shoes served as a stark, undeniable reminder to everyone left behind those heavy doors. A sacred bond had broken today. The bridge was burned to ash, leaving nothing but smoke in its wake.
As she stepped away from the Alpha's office, her bruised heart ached with a phantom pain for the family she just lost. Yet, as she moved forward, her spirit no longer trembled. For the first time in her life, amidst the ruins of her identity, she felt a strange, cold freedom.
