Terms of the Castaway
"That is enough!" Alpha Garrick’s commanding voice cut through the heavy silence of the office. The sheer volume of his roar rattled the framed territory maps hanging on the wood-paneled walls. He needed to regain control over the rapidly deteriorating situation. He stood behind his massive oak desk, his broad chest heaving as he stared down at the young woman who had just severed ties with her own sister.
He told himself there would be time for apologies later. Later, when the dust settled, he could sit Nyssa down, soothe her fresh wounds, and remind her she still held a place in this pack. But right now, the needs of the pack took precedence. The pack always came first. Talia carried the future heir in her womb, and that unborn child represented the stability of their future. Everything else was secondary.
Garrick softened his rigid posture, attempting to cushion the brutal blow of their collective actions. He framed the impending mating—and the illegitimate child—as a cruel joke of fate rather than a malicious betrayal.
"Nyssa," Garrick began, measuring his tone to sound reasonable and paternal. "You said you wanted to talk about the mating ceremony. I know what we are asking of you is agonizing. But you must understand our position. Our hands are tied."
Nyssa stared at him. Her expression was a blank mask, her posture as straight as a blade.
"Talia is already pregnant," Garrick reasoned, spreading his hands over the smooth surface of his desk. "Cormac chose her to be his Luna long before he knew you were his mate. The timing of it all was unfortunate. You were away at college for a long time, far from the territory. Cormac was training at the Alpha School. By the time you both returned and crossed paths again, fate had already set this tragedy in motion. It is not anyone's fault. It is just circumstances."
Nyssa saw right through the hollow excuse. She refused to let the Alpha dress their abandonment as mere coincidence. He wanted to blame the timing. He wanted to blame the Moon Goddess for a logistical error. But Nyssa knew the brutal truth. The future Alpha lacked the discipline to wait for his true mate. And Talia? Her sister chose her own desires over decency, opening her legs without a single thought for the mate who might be out there, without caring about the consequences. The future Alpha did not wait. She was not worth waiting for.
Meeting Garrick’s intense gaze with unreadable coldness, Nyssa did not flinch. "That is not what I came here to discuss, Alpha," she stated flatly. Her voice carried no warmth, dismissing his justifications with a single breath.
Garrick frowned, his jaw tightening at her blatant dismissal.
Stripping away the political pleasantries, Nyssa laid out her terms. "Since everyone in this room now knows the truth, there is no point in playing politics to minimize the damage. I will make my demands. This is my compensation for the humiliation I am being forced to endure."
The office went dead still. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner suddenly sounded like hammer strikes.
"Demands?" Garrick echoed. The word tasted sour on his tongue.
"Yes," Nyssa said. "First, I will relocate out of the Beta household today. I am moving to the abandoned punishment house at the far edge of the territory."
The room drew a collective breath. The punishment house was a decrepit shack bordering the rogue lands, meant for exiles.
"Second," Nyssa continued, her tone unwavering, "I resign from my position as the Beta secretary. I will no longer handle pack affairs, manage your schedules, or clean up your messes. Third, I require strict isolation from all of you until the day of the mating ceremony. I will remain on the territory as requested, but I want no contact. I want to be left alone."
Her audacious words sent ripples of shock across the room. The impact hit them like physical blows.
Corinne gasped. The Beta female’s legs gave out, and she collapsed against her mate, weeping into Vance’s arms. Vance caught his mate, his face twisting in genuine anguish as he looked at the daughter slipping through his fingers. He had trained her to be his successor, and now she was throwing it all away.
Beside them, Talia began to sob. She buried her face into Cormac’s broad chest, her shoulders shaking with the force of her tears. Seeing his chosen mate cry, Cormac immediately wrapped his strong arms around her. He rested his chin on the top of her head, murmuring soft words to soothe her distress.
Nyssa watched the exchange. A dark, twisted feeling curled in her stomach. That display of tenderness, that basic comfort—it had been denied to her when she discovered the betrayal. When she was made to bleed for their precious unity, they had all looked away. They demanded she swallow her pain for the greater good. But now? Now they rushed to dry Talia’s tears over a few harsh words. Watching them coddle the sister who had stolen her mate only deepened the resentment festering within her chest. It burned like acid.
"You are out of line, Nyssa!" Garrick thundered. His face flushed a dark red. He slammed his massive fist against the wooden desk with enough force to make the ancient timber groan in protest. The boom echoed sharply, making Corinne jump.
Nyssa held her ground. She did not blink. She did not break eye contact with the most powerful wolf in the room.
"Not really, Alpha," she replied, her tone conversational but laced with frost. "These are the terms for my cooperation. You expect me to pretend the Moon Goddess made a mistake. You expect me to sacrifice my fated mate for the sake of your pack unity, and smile for the crowds while doing it. Very well. I will play along with your narrative. But my price is freedom from all your toxic ties. No obligations. No pretend affection. Nothing."
"Sister, stop! Please!" Talia sobbed louder, tearing herself away from Cormac’s chest. She reached out a trembling hand toward Nyssa, her face slick with tears. "Don't say these things! I am so sorry for hurting you. Please don't push us away! I need you!"
Nyssa did not even glance at her sister. Her eyes remained locked on the Alpha, treating Talia like nothing more than background noise.
Corinne stepped forward, her hands shaking as she reached out. "Nyssa, please," her mother pleaded, her voice cracking with desperation. "Do not do this. We can still fix things if you just let us in. You are not the only one in pain right now. We are still a loving family, and we are hurting deeply alongside you. Do not tear us apart over pride."
For a fleeting, agonizing heartbeat, a raw ache flickered in Nyssa’s eyes. A fraction of the daughter they raised peeked through the armor. She remembered the warmth of her mother's embrace, the safety of her childhood home. Corinne saw the hesitation and took a hopeful breath. But the vulnerability vanished as quickly as it surfaced, freezing over into solid ice.
"This is not a family," Nyssa’s voice rang out. It was laced with a terrifying fury born of pure heartbreak.
The air in the room grew heavy, suffocating the wolves who stood around her. Nyssa swept her dark gaze over the stunned faces, exposing their sickening hypocrisy.
"A family protects each other," Nyssa continued, her voice gaining strength, cutting through the weeping and the silence like a scythe. "A family supports and uplifts. But you did not protect me. You sacrificed me. You took your own daughter and offered her up on a silver platter for the political convenience of this pack. You chose them over me."
She pointed a steady finger toward the desk. "You, Alpha, and your Luna—you live comfortably with your fated bonds. No one ever asked you to sever your soul in half for the sake of the territory."
She turned her piercing gaze to her parents. Corinne flinched, shrinking back. Vance lowered his head, unable to meet his daughter's furious stare.
"You, Beta, and my mother," Nyssa said, the words biting like frostbite. "You go to sleep every night next to the mate the Goddess gave you. You bask in the warmth of your bond. But when it came to me, you found it easy to demand I bury my bond. You tell me it is my duty. You tell me it is necessary for unity."
Nyssa took a single step forward. Her presence suddenly commanded the room, dwarfing the Alpha in her sheer moral authority.
"Tell me," she demanded, steadying her cracking voice as her eyes hardened to impenetrable steel. "Where was that same sacrifice from any of you? Which one of you gave up your soulmate for the pack? Where was it?"
No one answered. The guilt in the room was a tangible, crushing weight. Cormac stared at her, his jaw locked tight, his breathing shallow. Talia buried her face in her hands, her sobs muffling into her palms.
"I will stay until the mating ceremony is concluded," Nyssa vowed, her words echoing off the walls with brutal finality. "That is the price you asked of me, and I will pay it. But I will stay strictly on my own unyielding terms. And after that ceremony is done... I will never again call this pack, this massive house, or any of you my family."
The heavy finality of her words settled over the room like a dark storm cloud, suffocating the last remnants of hope they clung to. There were no more tears left for her to shed. There were no more pleas to make. Nyssa stood before them in the center of the office—calm, resolute, and entirely untouchable.
