The Crushing Blow

Sylvie’s POV

I am sitting in the back row of my history class, staring blankly at the scratched surface of my wooden desk. The teacher is droning on, rambling endlessly about pack borders and ancient treaties that hold no relevance to my actual life. I trace the grooves in the wood with my thumbnail, eager for the hour to pass. In a pack where strength is everything, a wolf-less girl like me survives by remaining invisible.

Suddenly, the heavy classroom door crashes open.

The sound hits the wall with a deafening bang. I flinch in my seat, but I do not even have to turn my head to know who just disrupted the lesson. It is the new Alpha everyone has been gossiping about since the early morning hours. The teacher thankfully falls silent. The room fills with a sudden flurry of frantic whispers as my classmates react to his presence. I stay still, wondering what an Alpha could possibly want in a mundane classroom like this.

Then, the scent hits me.

It drifts through the stale, chalk-filled air. It smells incredible, a drowsy and intoxicating mix of deep sandalwood and sharp bergamot. I inhale deeply, letting the rich aroma fill my lungs, and for a brief second, my mind goes fuzzy with comfort. But then my eyes narrow. A cold spike of adrenaline shoots straight through my veins as the realization hits. There is only one biological reason another person would smell this distinctly powerful to me.

He is my mate.

I slowly turn my head toward the doorway. Sure enough, his imposing figure fills the frame, and he raises a hand. He points his finger right at me, singling me out.

"You," he says gruffly. His voice is deep, oozing a heavy authority that commands immediate obedience. I grip the edges of my desk, trying not to flinch. "Come with me."

He does not wait for an answer. He simply turns and strides back out into the corridor. I am forced to stand up, my chair scraping loudly against the linoleum. I keep my eyes glued to the floor, acutely aware of the erupting giggles and cruel murmurs echoing from my classmates as I leave the room. Great. I am just providing fresh fodder for the gossip mill.

Stepping into the bright hallway, I close the door behind me and let myself look at him. I cannot help but stare in awe. His face is breathtakingly handsome, all sharp angles and strong lines. His eyes are a striking shade of green, and his black hair is shaggy, falling to his shoulders. He wears a dark leather jacket that makes him look tough, accentuating the thick muscles of his frame. I swallow hard, feeling an intense wave of nervousness crash over me as he turns to face me.

I steel myself. I am not naive. I know exactly why he brought me out here in the middle of the school day. He brought me here to reject me. What respected Alpha would ever want a girl as broken and tainted as me? I do not have a wolf. I am the lowest rung of the pack hierarchy. Standing next to a magnificent Alpha like him, I must look awful.

But I refuse to break. I square my shoulders, hardening my expression, refusing to let him see how deeply this is affecting me. I just need to get this over and done with, if only so I can escape back to my desk and pretend this never happened. I had dreamed of finding a mate since I was a little girl. As I got older, I stupidly hoped that my destined mate would save me from this miserable existence. I should have known better.

"Listen, can we hurry this up," I mutter, keeping my voice painfully flat. "I need to get back to class."

He looks momentarily stunned. His brow furrows, almost as though he was expecting me to burst into tears. But I mean every word. The sooner the mate bond is severed, the sooner the dreadful anticipation will be gone. For a fleeting moment, I am actually grateful that I do not have a wolf yet, which means the pain of rejection will be far less severe.

He stares at my cold expression, his jaw tightening. He takes a deep breath, and I brace myself for the inevitable words.

"I, Maddox of the Cobalt Moon Pack, reject you Sylvie of the..." He hesitates, stumbling over my pack's name.

"Iron Crescent," I supply firmly.

He nods, forcing the heavy words out of his mouth. "Reject you, Sylvie of the Iron Crescent Pack."

The moment the final syllable leaves his lips, I fight back a feral howl. An excruciating tearing sensation rips straight through my heart. It feels as if a jagged blade is twisting deep inside my chest, carving out a vital piece of my soul. The physical pain is blinding, but I refuse to let him see the devastation he has caused. I force the bitter bile back down my throat, locking my jaw until my teeth ache.

"I, Sylvie of the Iron Crescent Pack, accept Maddox of the Cobalt Moon Pack's rejection," I say dully.

Hiding the agonizing pain of being ripped in two, I give him a tight, empty smile. I turn on my heel and walk away without a single backward glance. I fight to keep my tears at bay. A part of me wants to scream out my anguish, to collapse on the cold floor and let the tears flow. But crying will not do me any good. It never does.

Returning to the classroom feels like walking directly to my own execution. My feet feel like they are encased in concrete. A thick sense of dread pools in my stomach as I slowly turn the door handle with a trembling hand. I force myself to step back into the room, walking casually, pretending nothing happened.

The teacher looks at me for a split second but says nothing. I slip quietly into my seat, dropping my gaze. For one fragile moment, I think that maybe everything will be okay.

My luck has run dry.

"Looks like somebody got rejected," Sloane drawls loudly from the back corner.

I stiffen instantly, accidentally confirming her cruel assumption. I can feel the pure malice and burning hatred radiating from her direction.

"Just leave me alone," I whisper.

Sloane lets out a nasty snort of laughter. I glance up, silently praying the teacher will maintain order. But Mr. Harrison merely looks away, indifferent to the bullying. I deflate, sinking lower in my chair. Even the authority figures do not care what happens to me.

The classroom quickly erupts into cruel mockery.

"Did he hurt your feelings?" Sloane mocks, a vicious smirk playing on her lips.

I remain silent. I breathe deeply in and out, trying to channel my anger, fighting to keep myself from exploding. Why is it so impossible for them to just leave me alone? I am hurting so badly right now, and Sloane is taking delight in my suffering.

"Sylvie got rejected!" another student shouts.

I groan softly and put a hand over my eyes. The students begin to laugh at my misfortune, their mocking voices overlapping.

"Well, who would want her?"

"Look at her. She's ugly. Of course, he rejected her."

"She's pathetic, just look at her."

"No way an Alpha would want to be anywhere near her."

The harsh whispers bounce back and forth. I bury my head against my desk, silently absorbing the malice, desperate for the final bell to ring. The depression weighing on me is so immense that I do not even care that going home will be just as painful. I just need to get away from this dreadful place.

When the bell finally rings, I could almost jump for joy. My relief, however, is instantly shattered.

While the rest of the class filters out into the busy hallways, Sloane and her groupies do not leave. They intentionally hang back. As I sling my backpack over my shoulder, I realize they have cornered me. I look up into Sloane's smirking face, a cold shiver running down my spine. She glances over at her friends.

"You know what to do," Sloane orders them coldly.

Panic seizes my chest. I drop my bag and try to run, but I am not fast enough.

A pair of hands shoves me hard from behind. I crash onto the floor, my knees slamming against the linoleum. Before I can scramble away, heavy boots rain down on me.

They kick me viciously, over and over again. I scream in pure agony as a shoe connects with my side. I feel my ribs crack with a sickening snap. My chest tightens instantly in a desperate struggle for air, my lungs refusing to expand. I curl my body into a tight ball, shielding my head with my arms, waiting an eternity for the brutal agony to stop.

"Stay away from Maddox, bitch," Sloane whispers menacingly from the doorway as they finally back off and leave the room.

Curled in a fetal position on the cold floor, I sob through the horrendous pain. Every shallow breath sends a white-hot spike of agony through my shattered ribs. I know I will be incredibly lucky just to get up on my own, let alone make it home.

Slowly, torturously, I drag myself onto my trembling hands and knees. The room violently spins around me, the edges of the desks blurring into dark shadows. I push off the floor, gritting my teeth against the searing pain.

I barely make it to a standing position before extreme lightheadedness takes over my brain. My legs give out beneath me. Right as I fall back to the floor and the heavy darkness completely surrounds me, the classroom door bursts open.

The last thing I hear before I lose consciousness is his frantic voice, yelling at the top of his lungs, "Get a doctor here now."
