No Place to Hide
"Please, you have to stop. You cannot do this to me!" Serena choked out, her voice cracking under the heavy weight of her despair. "This is my home!"
Tears streamed down her face in an endless, hot cascade, blurring her vision. Her head throbbed with a relentless, pounding ache, a direct result of hours spent sobbing until her chest felt hollow. She stood on the unforgiving concrete of the sidewalk, surrounded by the scattered, broken pieces of her life. The cold wind bit through her thin blouse, but she barely felt it.
The movers ignored her desperate pleas. They moved with mechanical efficiency, their faces set in blank masks of sheer indifference as they lifted her sealed boxes and hauled her furniture out the front doors. They deposited her velvet sofa, her mattress, and her luggage haphazardly onto the street, treating her treasured belongings like worthless trash.
"I am telling you, you have the wrong apartment," Serena begged, rushing toward the lead mover. Her shaking hands reached out, hovering in the air between them. "I am not a terrible person. Dominic would not just throw me out like this. There has to be a mistake. Please, just put my things back inside. I need a moment to think."
The burly man paused, looking her up and down with a flat, uncaring expression. "We are only acting on instructions, ma'am. Mr. Vance gave strict orders." He adjusted his grip on the heavy box in his arms. "We are to clear this unit out immediately to prepare for a new tenant moving in tonight."
"Tonight?" The word left her lips in a breathless gasp. The world tilted on its axis. "That is impossible."
"If you have complaints, you need to contact Mr. Vance," the man stated, his tone devoid of empathy. He resumed his brisk stride, brushing past her without a second glance. "We stop only if he tells us to stop. Excuse me."
Serena stood stranded and powerless among her scattered possessions. The chaotic noise of the city street faded into a sharp, high-pitched ringing in her ears. A fresh wave of tears built in her eyes as the devastating reality settled deep into her bones. Seeing there was nothing she could do to halt the men, she retreated to her car parked by the curb. She pulled open the door, practically falling into the driver's seat, and slammed it shut, sealing herself inside the quiet cabin.
She reached into her handbag in the back, her fingers trembling so hard she could barely grasp her phone. She pulled it out and dialed Dominic's number. She brought the phone to her ear, holding her breath.
It rang once. Twice. Three times. Then, the sterile, automated voice of his voicemail filled the silence.
"Please pick up your phone," she cried, a harsh sob tearing through her throat. She ended the call and dialed again. Her thumb hit the button over and over, desperate for him to answer, desperate for a chance to ask what she had done wrong. The voicemail greeted her every single time. He was ignoring her.
Wiping her wet cheeks with the back of her hand, Serena pushed the key into the ignition. The engine hummed to life. She pulled away from the curb, leaving her entire world piled on the sidewalk. She had no idea where she was going. The city streets blurred past her in a wash of gray and neon lights. She thought about heading to the office, but the image of the security guards barring her entry flashed in her mind. They would never let her past the lobby.
Gripping the leather steering wheel, she made a sharp U-turn. She drove straight toward Dominic's private estate. She knew the chances of him being home in the middle of the day were slim, but she had nowhere else to turn.
After what felt like an eternity navigating the winding roads, she reached the imposing iron gates of his residence. The towering metal structure loomed ahead, a familiar sight that used to represent safety and warmth. She pulled the car up close to the keypad. She rolled down the window, the cool air hitting her tear-stained face, and reached out to punch in her regular passcode.
Beep.
A harsh red light flashed on the panel. Access declined.
"No," Serena whispered. Her heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Thinking her shaking fingers had made an error, she carefully pressed the numbers a second time.
The red light flashed again.
"Please, do not tell me he changed this," she pleaded to the empty air, her throat tight with fresh, stinging tears. She punched in the code one final time. The red light glared back at her, mocking her desperation. He had locked her out. He had erased her access to his home, to his life.
Panic seized her chest. She grabbed her phone again and scrolled through her contacts. Her thumb hovered over Holden's name, but she skipped it, knowing it would be useless. She found Brenda's number. Brenda, the older woman who managed the estate, the woman who had always treated her with a warm smile and motherly affection.
Serena pressed the call button. The line rang out, the sound echoing in the silent car.
"Hi, Brenda," Serena sniffled the second the call connected.
Silence met her ears. Serena pulled the phone away, staring at the screen through blurry eyes, terrified Brenda had hung up. The call timer was still ticking. She pressed the phone back to her ear. "Brenda, are you there?"
"Hi dear, I can hear you," Brenda's gentle voice came through the speaker.
The moment she heard that familiar, sympathetic tone, Serena broke down into uncontrollable sobs. The dam shattered. "What is going on, Brenda? Dominic blocked me!" she blurted out, her words tumbling over one another in a frantic rush.
"He fired me. He would not even look me in the eye to hear me out or explain what I did. I drove to my apartment, and the movers were hauling my belongings onto the street. He directed them to throw my things out. I drove here, I tried coming inside, but he changed the codes. Why, Brenda? Why is he doing this?"
She gasped for air, the pain ripping her apart from the inside. "I did nothing to him, and yet he has humiliated me in front of everyone. I need answers. This pain is too much to bear. I cannot breathe."
"Please calm down, Sera," Brenda said, her voice laced with sadness.
"He came to the office with another woman," Serena cried, recounting the devastating details. "His assistant said they are getting married this weekend. How is that even possible? He proposed to me just days ago. I did not do anything to hurt him. I have no idea why he is treating me this way."
"I am trying to stay calm," Serena continued, her voice breaking. "I just need an explanation. I lost my job, my home, and my fiance all in one day. Today was supposed to be special. I wanted to tell him something important, but he kicked me out. Where do I even start? My whole life has been taken away from me."
"Do not cry, Sera. You are stronger than you think. I promise you," Brenda offered.
"Can you please talk to Dominic for me?" Serena pleaded, clutching the phone like a lifeline. "At least let him hear me out. Let me explain, whatever he thinks I did."
A heavy silence stretched across the line.
"I am sorry, Sera, but I do not think I would be of any help," Brenda finally admitted. Her tone was sympathetic but utterly helpless.
"Please, do not turn your back on me, Brenda. You are my last hope."
She heard the older woman sigh heavily on the other end. "You have not done anything to offend me, my child, and I do not think you did anything to offend Dominic either. It is just unfortunate that all of this is happening."
"Then why?" Serena demanded, hot tears tracking down her chin. "We were fine. We could not do without each other. Now he wants me erased from his life?"
"Listen to me, child," Brenda said softly. "You are an amazing woman. I was rooting for you and Dominic to be together. I am just as shocked as you are. I would have come out to the gates to meet you, or I would have let you in, but I was strictly ordered not to do so. Dominic changed the passcode himself, making it clear he does not want you anywhere near his premises."
Serena closed her eyes, the rejection hitting her like a physical blow.
"Since I have known him, he never brought another woman home. He was crazy about you," Brenda noted. "At first, I thought you might have offended him. But given the circumstances, I believe this is all Dominic's firm decision. I had never seen him love anyone the way he loved you, but he seems to have moved on. I advise you to do the same. It might be hard, but you have to move on."
The words hung in the air, final and devastating. Brenda had confirmed the absolute worst. There was no misunderstanding. This was Dominic's choice. He had discarded her. Serena sat in the driver's seat, feeling completely isolated from the rest of the world.
She let the phone drop to her lap and leaned her head back against the headrest. She stared up at the car ceiling, feeling her life had hit rock bottom.
Loud, harsh knocks pounded against the driver's side window.
Serena jumped, her heart leaping into her throat. She snapped her head to the left, wiping the moisture from her eyes. Standing right outside her car window was a figure that made her blood run cold.
Helena Vance.
Dominic's imposing, aristocratic mother stared down at her, her face a mask of cold disgust. Serena had only ever seen the matriarch posed in glossy magazines or standing on distant balconies during high-society events. Trembling and foolishly hoping this might be a lifeline, an opportunity to beg for mercy, Serena unbuckled her seatbelt. With shaking hands, she pushed the door open and stepped out onto the harsh asphalt.
Before Serena could even form a single word of greeting, before she could ask why she deserved this nightmare, Helena's hand flew through the air.
The palm struck Serena viciously across the face.
A sharp crack echoed in the quiet street. The impact snapped Serena's head to the side. A searing heat bloomed across her cheek, and her ear began to ring. Hot tears instantly spilled down her face. She raised a trembling hand to her stinging skin, her lips quivering as she tried to comprehend the sudden violence.
"What the hell are you doing here?" Helena spat, her voice dripping with venom.
Serena opened her mouth to speak, to defend herself, but no sound came out. The sheer shock paralyzed her vocal cords.
"You bitch," Helena snarled, stepping closer, her eyes blazing with aristocratic fury. "Why can't you stay the hell away from my son? Do you honestly think we are going to allow a gold digger like you to creep into his life and take advantage of him? What are you doing outside his home?"
"Mrs. Vance, please, I—" Serena started, finding her voice.
Helena raised her hand again, silencing her instantly. "You piece of trash! Do not dare speak when I am talking to you."
Helena's sharp eyes darted away from Serena's bruised face and landed on the sleek vehicle parked behind her. Her perfectly arched eyebrows pulled together. "Wait a minute. Is this not company property?"
Serena's breath hitched.
Helena turned her head toward the massive, suited guard standing a few paces away. "Rocco!" she ordered coldly. "Take this car back. She has no right to it."
Panic, pure and unadulterated, ripped through Serena's chest. She lunged forward, discarding all pride. "No, please! Please do not take the car away from me!" she wept, her voice breaking into a hysterical pitch. "This is literally my only remaining shelter. They threw my belongings onto the street. I have nowhere else to go. Please, Ma'am, I am begging you!"
Helena ignored her pleas completely, her face a rigid mask of disgust. "Throw her things out of the vehicle and take the keys."
"Please, do not do this to me," Serena cried, reaching out.
"Do not dare lay your filthy hands on me!" Helena glared, taking a deliberate step back.
Following the ruthless orders, Rocco stepped forward. His massive frame easily bypassed Serena. He reached into the luxurious car, his large hands grabbing her leather handbag from the passenger seat. Without a second thought, he callously hurled it into the street. The bag hit the ground, bursting open. Her phone flew out of the open pocket, crashing violently onto the hard pavement. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of broken glass.
"My phone!" Serena cried out, her last tether to the world destroyed.
"Do you hear me?" Helena demanded, stepping into Serena's personal space, her voice rising to a furious snarl. "Do not ever come near my son, or my family, ever again!"
With a burst of vicious energy, Helena shoved Serena backward.
The forceful push caught Serena entirely off guard. Unable to catch her balance, her high heels twisted awkwardly on the uneven gravel. The world spun in a blur of gray sky and dark trees. She fell backward, her arms flailing wildly in the air.
She crashed heavily onto the harsh asphalt. Her body twisted during the descent, and she landed directly and forcefully on her belly.
The impact knocked the breath from her lungs. A split second later, a blood-curdling cry of pure agony tore from her throat. A sudden, sharp pain cut directly through her abdomen, tearing through her core like a jagged blade. The terror of the moment consumed her entirely. Her hands flew down, instinctively wrapping tightly around her stomach as she curled into a tight ball on the cold street.
