The Counterfeit Crisis
Pinned against the corridor wall by her sister, Vivienne crossed her arms. She remained unfazed, staring down Camilla’s furious glare.
"Why don’t you direct that question of yours to your boyfriend?" Vivienne shot back, her tone laced with boredom. "Why are you asking me that?"
Camilla’s face turned pale with boiling rage. Humiliated by the casual dismissal, she pointed a trembling finger at Vivienne’s chest and spat a final, ominous threat. "Vivienne Kensington, you won’t be preening yourself for long. Just you wait!"
Camilla spun on her heel and stormed off down the corridor. Her stilettos clicked sharply against the marble floor, echoing in the quiet hallway. Vivienne squinted her eyes at her retreating back. A cool smirk touched her lips. She wondered who would ultimately emerge triumphant in this escalating war. The battle lines were drawn, and the silence left in Camilla's wake felt like the calm before a storm.
Shortly after Vivienne settled into her office, the quiet focus of her morning shattered. The heavy wooden door burst open. A panicked staff member stumbled into the room, her chest heaving as she gasped for air.
"Ms. Veda, something happened!" the clerk cried out, her eyes wide with terror.
Vivienne paused, pulling her hands away from her keyboard. She studied the trembling woman. "What is the matter?"
The clerk swallowed hard. "A large group of valuable customers is rioting in the grand lobby. They are furious over being sold fake jewelry. The purchasing department is claiming that the fraudulent raw materials were acquired under your orders."
Unfazed by the obvious trap closing around her, Vivienne shut down her computer monitor. She stood up, smoothed out the invisible wrinkles in her skirt, and grabbed her clipboard. The pieces of Camilla’s little game were falling into place.
"Let's go take a look," Vivienne said, her voice steady. She headed straight down to the lobby to investigate the sabotage.
The expansive ground-floor lobby was in a state of deafening chaos. An agitated, wealthy lady slammed a supposed pearl bracelet onto the glass display table. The sharp crack echoed through the cavernous space.
"Lumina Jewelry has been in the business for decades, and yet you’re manufacturing fakes! Do you still want to be in business?" the woman yelled. She glared at the nervous staff behind the counter, threatening to expose Lumina to the public and the media for conning its most loyal customers.
Playing the role of the innocent, concerned peacemaker, Camilla stepped out from the gathered crowd. She placed a gentle hand on the angry woman’s arm.
"Madam, please calm down," Camilla assured her sweetly. "We have already communicated with our purchasing department. There must be a severe issue with the supplier's materials." She offered a comforting, sympathetic smile. "Our newly appointed designer will clear up the source of the error once she arrives. We will get to the bottom of this."
"I'll double the compensation."
Vivienne’s strong, unwavering voice cut through the noise of the room. The murmurs died down as everyone’s gaze shifted to her. The crowd parted as she walked to the display counter. She picked up the heavy pearl bracelet, turning it over in her hands. She inspected the luster of the stones under the bright overhead lights, rubbing the surface with her thumb.
Dropping the jewelry back onto the velvet display tray, she casually confirmed to the hushed crowd, "These are indeed fake pearls."
"See, I told you it’s fake!" the wealthy lady shouted, her anger flaring with newfound confidence.
Seizing the anticipated moment, Camilla snapped her fingers. Her secretary stepped forward, presenting the official purchasing order slip to the crowd.
"Vivi, you ordered all these materials," Camilla said, her voice dripping with fake, sisterly concern. "The purchasing department acquired the raw materials according to the order slip you placed. Why are there fakes?"
Vivienne took the crisp sheet of paper from the secretary. She skimmed the details, noting the item codes and signatures printed on it, and smiled lightly.
"This is indeed the order slip that I handed them," she confirmed openly, her gaze meeting Camilla's without a hint of fear.
Camilla went on the offensive. "Vivi, did you do this to ruin Lumina's legacy?" she accused loudly, ensuring the entire lobby heard her. "Are you intentionally destroying the company's fragile reputation and deceiving innocent customers?"
The crowd erupted at the confirmation. The wealthy lady glared daggers at Vivienne, stepping forward to invade her personal space. "You're the one who purchased these fakes? You’re so wicked! Why even open up stores? Pay me back the money I've lost!"
"Yes, pay her back!" another customer chimed in.
"If you don’t give us a proper explanation today, we will drag the entire company to court for fraud!"
Amidst the terrifying outrage, Camilla gloated in the background. Her lips curled into a victorious smirk, certain that she had finally cornered her rival and secured her own absolute power within the company.
"What’s wrong this time around?"
The chaotic noise died down to a dead silence. Gideon and Wyatt appeared at the entrance, their imposing figures stepping through the parting crowd.
Seeing Gideon's towering figure, Camilla rushed to his side. Her aggressive tone shifted into an aggrieved, fragile whimper.
"Gideon, we’ve found fakes in Lumina again," she reported, her eyes wide and pleading as she threw Vivienne under the bus. "But Vivi is responsible for the acquisition of the rough diamonds and raw materials this time."
The angry customer stepped forward, pleading her case to the billionaire. "Mr. Rothwell, you might not know this, but I bought fake pearls from Lumina for thousands of dollars. Please reason this out for me! How can a respected, decades-old brand suddenly sell fraudulent goods to its loyal patrons?"
Gideon ignored the frantic customer. His heavy, intimidating gaze locked onto Vivienne. He stepped slowly toward her, his commanding aura suffocating the room, making the air feel thick and unbreathable. His jaw tensed, and his tone dropped to an ice-cold register.
"You’re responsible for the purchase of raw materials. Give them an explanation."
