The Stolen Inheritance
A sharp, throbbing ache split Vivienne Kensington’s skull the moment she dragged her eyes open. The air conditioning blew across her bare skin, raising immediate goosebumps. She blinked against the harsh morning light filtering through the heavy drapes. This was not her bedroom. She turned her heavy head, her gaze landing on a complimentary notepad resting on the wooden nightstand: *Celestia Hotel*. Beside the notepad lay a plastic room key card stamped with the numbers 6228.
A wave of panic washed over her chest. She tried to push herself up, but a fresh wave of physical agony forced a sharp gasp from her throat. Her body felt battered. She looked down. She was naked. Her breasts and stomach were exposed to the chilled air, and her skin bore red marks. Between her legs, her vagina felt raw and bruised, a direct confirmation of the physical trauma she had endured during the night. She lay in a rumpled bed, the white hotel sheets tangled around her ankles.
Beside her, a man breathed in a steady rhythm. His broad, muscular back was turned to her, his face buried deep within the feather pillows. The unique scent of Gucci cologne lingered in the sheets, mixing with the smell of sweat.
Vivienne did not stay to examine his face. The fragmented memories of the previous night slammed into her waking mind. She had been at a bar, celebrating her birthday. Her half-sister, Camilla, had smiled a sweet smile and handed her a glass of cold sangria. Vivienne had taken a few sips. Then, the world had spun into a disorienting haze.
The horrifying realization struck her like a physical blow. Camilla had intentionally drugged her. Her own flesh and blood had orchestrated this nightmare.
A frantic scramble took over. Trembling, Vivienne pushed herself out of the bed, biting the inside of her cheek to stifle any sound of pain. She found her black dress discarded in a heap on the carpet. She snatched her scattered undergarments, her hands shaking as she fastened her bra and dragged the fabric of her dress over her head. She shoved her feet into her high heels, grabbed her purse from the floor, and fled the hotel room before the stranger could stir.
Upon arriving at the Kensington manor, she was afforded no moment of solace. The heavy oak doors clicked shut behind her, but the silence of the house felt suffocating. She walked into the living room.
Her father, Richard, waited on the leather sofa. His face was a mask of furious indignation. He gripped a ceramic mug in his hand, his knuckles white.
"Where were you last night?" Richard’s voice clipped through the quiet room, echoing off the high ceilings.
Vivienne swallowed the dry lump in her throat. She needed a moment to process, to confront Camilla first and demand answers. "I fell asleep at a friend’s house."
Richard bolted upright. He slammed the mug onto the coffee table, snatching a photograph and thrusting it mere inches from her face. "You spent the night with a man in a hotel room! How dare you stand there and lie to me?"
Vivienne stared at the paper. The damning image showed her slumped against an unidentified man, his arm wrapped tight around her waist as he led her through the glass doors of the Celestia Hotel. The blood drained from her face.
Footsteps clicked against the wooden stairs. Camilla hurried down in her designer heels, adopting the persona of a disappointed and heartbroken sister.
"Dad, please calm down," Camilla said, placing a gentle hand on his arm. She turned to Vivienne, her eyes wide with fake sympathy. "Vivi, how could you embarrass our family like this? Even if you love this man, you should know not to cross the line before getting married. You have ruined your reputation."
Vivienne’s jaw dropped. The audacity of the lie left her breathless. "I was unconscious!" She turned her desperate gaze back to her father. "Dad, listen to me. I was celebrating my birthday with Camilla. She handed me a drink. She slipped something into my sangria—"
"Shut your mouth!" Richard roared, fiercely cutting her off. He pointed a trembling finger at her chest. Blinded by favoritism, he stepped between the two sisters, shielding Camilla. "Camilla is your older sister. I forbid you from blaming her for your own promiscuity! You think you can drag her name through the mud to cover up your shameless behavior?"
Vivienne stood in shock. Her fists clenched at her sides, her nails biting into her palms. Her father had always favored his second wife and the daughter they had raised behind her late mother's back. But this blind defense shattered whatever remaining hope she held.
"I planned to pass Lumina Jewelry to you when you came of age," Richard sneered, his tone cold. "But look at what you pulled. You tarnished the Kensington name with your stunts. I am stripping you of your succession to Lumina Jewelry right now. The Kensington family can do better without a shameless wretch for a daughter. I never want to see your face again!"
Vivienne blinked, the stinging in her eyes blurring her vision. "Dad..." she whispered. "Are you kicking me out?"
Richard grabbed the ceramic mug from the table and smashed it right at her feet. The pieces shattered across the marble floor. "Get out of my house!"
Vivienne dragged her heavy luggage out into the cold yard. The wheels clattered against the stone driveway. The chill of the morning air bit through her thin dress, but the numbness inside her chest felt much colder.
Before she could reach her car, Camilla intercepted her. The sweet facade vanished the second they were out of earshot. Camilla’s face twisted into a malicious sneer.
"Need some help with those bags?" Camilla mocked, stepping uncomfortably close.
"Get lost," Vivienne snapped, slapping Camilla's reaching hand away.
Camilla chuckled, a dry, grating sound. She brazenly crossed her arms. "I will be honest with you since you are leaving. I did add a little something into that drink last night. I am guessing it must feel horrible to be tainted by a man you don't even know."
Vivienne gritted her teeth. "You and your mother wormed your way into this house. You took my father. What more do you want from me?"
"I want your status!" Camilla declared fiercely. She stepped closer, her eyes burning with greedy motives. "Why am I forced to be the illegitimate child while you get treated as the crown jewel of the Kensingtons? You walked around born noble and proud. Well, look at you now. You are nothing but a tainted woman. You lost Lumina Jewelry. You lost your home. You should know where you stand."
To ensure Vivienne’s defeat, Camilla reached into her designer purse and pulled out her mobile phone. She tapped the screen and waved it right in front of Vivienne’s face.
A blackmail video played on the screen. It showed the hotel hallway from the previous night, capturing the exact moment the man carried Vivienne's limp body through the door of Room 6228.
"If you do not want this video leaked to the media," Camilla threatened, her voice dripping with venom, "if you do not want to risk ruining your life, then you will leave this city permanently. Do not ever come back."
Defeated, numb, and stripped of her legacy, Vivienne stared blankly at the screen. The fight drained out of her bruised body. She loosened her clenched fists. Without uttering another word, she hauled her luggage off the ground, shoved it into the trunk of her car, and slammed it shut. She got into the driver’s seat, turned the key, and drove away. She did not look back in the rearview mirror as the car rolled out of the heavy iron gates, disappearing into the unknown.
Camilla stood alone in the cold yard. A smug smile spread across her lips as she gloated over her successful theft of the inheritance. Lumina Jewelry belonged to her now. The Kensington legacy was finally hers for the taking.
The grinding crunch of tires on gravel broke the silence.
The imposing silhouette of a black Rolls-Royce pulled up to the manor’s front door. Four broad-shouldered bodyguards dressed in matching black suits stepped out simultaneously, lining up beside the vehicle in perfect synchronization.
The rear door swung open. A man stepped out, placing a polished leather shoe on the driveway. He stood tall, his athletic build commanding immediate attention. He wore a crisp, black striped suit that screamed wealth and power.
Camilla froze in place. Her smug smile vanished, replaced by sheer awe. She recognized that face from the covers of every financial magazine in the country. It was Gideon Rothwell.
He was the powerful and formidable billionaire CEO of Obsidian Group. He reigned as the wealthiest king of business in the entire capital of Crownhaven. His net worth spanned hundreds of millions, and his influence reached into every corner of the royal capital.
What was a man of his status doing in the driveway of the Kensington manor?
Gideon Rothwell adjusted his cuffs. He swept his cold, unfeeling gaze over her, his dark eyes assessing her with chilling precision. He closed the distance between them, his presence radiating an oppressive authority.
"Are you Camilla Kensington?" Gideon asked directly, his voice a deep baritone that sent a shiver down her spine.
Camilla's heart hammered against her ribs. He recognized her. "Yes," she managed to say, nodding her head. "That is me."
Gideon stared down at her without a flicker of emotion. "Were you the woman who spent the night with me in Celestia Hotel, Room 6228?"
A massive shock rippled through Camilla's mind. The breath hitched in her throat.
Celestia Hotel. Room 6228.
That was the exact room she had reserved to ruin Vivienne. She had paid a repulsive old man to enter that room and defile her half-sister. But the man standing in front of her was not the old man.
Vivienne had not slept with the old man. Vivienne had slept with Gideon Rothwell.
A surge of jealousy clawed at Camilla's chest. Vivienne had stumbled into the bed of the wealthiest king of business in the capital. But as Gideon stood there, waiting for her answer, greed instantly overcame Camilla's shock. Vivienne was gone. The video proved nothing about the woman's face inside the room.
She was unwilling to let such miraculous luck go to waste. If Gideon Rothwell thought she was the woman in that bed, she would secure a future beyond her wildest dreams.
Camilla swallowed her hesitation. She flashed a bright, practiced grin, tilting her head to look up at him. She nodded firmly, staring directly into the billionaire's cold eyes.
"Why, indeed," Camilla lied, her voice sweet and unwavering. "I am the woman you were with."
