The Midnight Kiss

Declan's heart skipped a terrified beat in his chest. He stopped dead in his tracks, turning slowly to meet Clara's steady, unblinking gaze. The silence settling over the expansive foyer felt deafening. The heavy oak door stood half-open, letting in a bitter draft of winter air, yet the chill paled in comparison to the sudden ice in his veins.

"Clara…" Her name slipped past his lips, a breathless, panicked sound escaping him. His mind scrambled to construct a defensible lie, something to brush away the slip of the tongue. He prepared for an accusation, bracing himself for the argument that usually followed a husband's suspicious behavior.

Before he could force out an excuse, Clara's lips curved into a bright, easy smile. Her voice carried a light, breezy tone, devoid of the jealousy he anticipated. "Relax. Why do you look so tense?"

She waved off her own question before he had to formulate an answer. "It's natural. You and Vanessa have known each other since childhood. Of course, you would still be used to calling her by her old, familiar nickname."

Relief washed over his rigid posture, though his dark eyes lingered on her face. He seemed unsettled by her lack of possessiveness, searching her expression for any hidden trap. Finding none, he nodded tightly. He quickly exited the villa, eager to escape the suffocating tension.

Moments later, the deep roar of his sleek black Maybach echoed through the snowy night as the engine flared to life. Clara stood alone in the quiet hallway, listening to the tires crunch over the icy driveway until the sound faded into the distance. She mentally scolded her own momentary lapse in discipline. For weeks, she had played the role of the quiet, obedient, wronged wife. She knew exactly how to cultivate the heavy guilt required to secure a clean, uncontested divorce from him. Why had she jeopardized that careful strategy by throwing out a pointless, emotionally charged question?

Shaking the remnants of her lingering bitterness away, she turned and retreated to the safety of her bedroom.

She spent the next hour setting up her ring light, adjusting the angles until the soft glow erased the fatigue shadowing her features. She logged into her platform and began hosting a specialized, technical wellness livestream for her private clinic. She answered questions with professional grace, her calm demeanor drawing in hundreds of viewers. Being married to a husband perpetually indifferent to her existence offered her one massive advantage: the freedom to quietly build her own independent medical career. Through these sessions and private consultations, she managed to amass her own private savings, staying out of the watchful, oppressive eye of the Vance family.

When the stream wrapped at ten o'clock, she closed her laptop, feeling a genuine sense of accomplishment. Her phone buzzed on the desk. Camilla had just pulled up to the villa in her bright sports car, demanding they go out to celebrate Clara's impending divorce.

The downtown bar was packed tight with bodies. The air hung thick with booming bass, the heavy scent of spilled alcohol, and flashing neon lights that painted the dancing crowd in jagged streaks of color. Clara squeezed into a small booth, tipping back her first icy drink. The burn of the liquor felt grounding against her frayed nerves. Camilla leaned over the small table, laughing loudly over the deafening roar of the music.

"Does Declan even know his perfect wife drinks alcohol?" Camilla shouted with a wide grin.

Clara smiled faintly. A small dimple showed on her cheek. "He does not know. Just like I had no earthly idea his heart had always belonged to Van—"

Her sentence cut off abruptly.

A sudden, deafening chant erupted from the crowded dance floor nearby, drowning out the throbbing bass of the club's sound system.

"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" the crowd roared in unison.

Clara slowly turned her head toward the commotion. The faint smile froze, dying instantly on her lips.

Bathed in the strobing neon lights stood Declan Vance. His strong arms were wrapped tightly, possessively around Vanessa Thorne. Vanessa was dressed in a striking, deep red slip dress that clung to her figure. Declan’s usually rigid, famously composed face held a rare, breathtaking softness that Clara had never once been allowed to witness in their three years of marriage.

As Vanessa rose eagerly onto her tiptoes, pressing her lips directly to his, Declan did not pull away. Instead, he tightened his grip around her waist. He pulled her flush against his chest, deepening the embrace right there in the middle of the crowded room.

Sitting beside Clara, Camilla stared in jaw-dropping disbelief. Her eyes widened as she took in the scandalous scene. "Wait," she yelled over the relentless cheering. "Is Declan’s great, secret love actually Vanessa Thorne?"

Clara drained the burning liquid remaining in her glass. Her throat felt impossibly tight. "Yeah. Shocking, right?" Her voice dropped to a dry, hoarse whisper. "I didn't see it coming either."

The very same high-society crowd that once respectfully called her 'Mrs. Vance' was now cheering for her husband's public infidelity. They clapped and whistled, celebrating the display.

Disgusted and fiercely protective, Camilla whipped out her phone. She framed the shot, snapping several high-resolution photos of the sickening embrace. She then grabbed Clara by the wrist, pulling her out of the suffocating bar and dragging her into the sharp, cold night air.

The aftermath hit Clara the following afternoon. She woke up late, her head pounding with a severe hangover that made the room spin. Blinking against the harsh daylight pouring through the gaps in the curtains, she fumbled for her phone on the nightstand. A massive notification greeted her tired eyes.

A crisp $700,000 deposit had just cleared into her bank account.

The sender was listed as Vanessa, though Clara knew with certainty the funds were likely drained directly from Declan's accounts. Considering half of their massive marital assets rightfully belonged to her anyway, she accepted the small fortune without a second thought. She dismissed the notification and tossed the phone onto the mattress.

Dragging herself downstairs, her stomach churned uncomfortably. She found Martha organizing the pantry and quietly asked for a bowl of hot soup to settle the nausea.

Suddenly, the kitchen doors banged open with startling force.

Finnegan barreled into the room, his small shoes squeaking against the tile. He planted his tiny fists firmly on his hips. His face twisted in a cruel, triumphant sneer that mirrored his mother's worst traits.

"Uncle Declan and my mommy were out together all night long!" he announced loudly, pointing an accusing finger at her. "You won't be my aunt for much longer! You are a pathetic, bad woman who lacks the worth to keep her husband!"

Clara did not flinch. She set her glass of water down on the marble counter. She slowly bent down, swatting his pointing finger away with a dismissive flick of her wrist. A kind, sweet smile spread across her face, masking the venom beneath. She gently patted the boy's chubby cheek.

"Do you comprehend exactly what you will become if your mother actually marries Uncle Declan?" Clara asked in a soft, deadly voice.

Finnegan blinked, his cruel sneer faltering under her intense gaze. "What?"

"You will become dead weight," she stated calmly. "Let me explain that to you. The second your mommy and your precious uncle have a brand-new, perfect biological baby of their own, no one in the Vance family will ever look at you or like you again. You won't be the special favorite anymore."

She tilted her head, ending the psychological strike by cheerfully asking, "Are you happy now, little burden?"

The words pierced the boy's fragile ego with surgical precision. Finnegan's face crumpled, turning bright red. He burst into loud, fat, desperate wails. Tears streamed down his cheeks as he scrambled backward. He pulled out his tablet with shaking hands, stabbing at the screen to video-call Vanessa, desperate to demand reassurance.

The call rang endlessly. It went unanswered, echoing off the kitchen walls.

He glared at Clara through blurry, tear-filled eyes, sobbing as he hit the dial button again. Still nothing.

"See?" Clara smoothly pointed out, taking a sip of her water. "Your mother is ignoring you. I told you, they simply do not like you anymore."

At that exact moment, Clara’s phone buzzed in her hand. It was an urgent message from Camilla. Clara opened it and stared at the forwarded, scandalous article glowing on her screen.

Martha hurried out of the pantry, carrying the steaming bowl of hot soup. She looked visibly startled by the boy's hysterical crying. "What is wrong with the child now?" she asked, raising her voice over the endless wails.

Clara held up her brightly lit screen. She casually turned it to show Martha the forwarded link.

"Perhaps the boy just saw the news and realized his mother is a homewrecker," Clara suggested offhandedly to the maid. "Rough stuff for a kid to process."

Martha set the soup down heavily on the counter and leaned in to look. She gasped loudly, her hands flying to her mouth. Her wide eyes scanned the massive, bold-faced headline plastered across the screen:

*Vance Corp.'s CEO, Declan Vance, Caught Kissing Mystery Woman in a Bar Late at Night!*
