The Stranger's Rescue

The jagged, frozen stones of the Kensington courtyard bit through Clara's thin pants the second her knees hit the ground. Genevieve offered no mercy for Declan's unexcused absence. For four excruciating hours, Clara knelt in the biting winter chill. At first, a layer of snow offered a small buffer against the ground. But as her body heat melted the frost, only sharp, unforgiving rocks remained. They dug into her flesh, tearing the skin. Once the time elapsed, the maids stepped forward with rigid canes. They commanded Clara to hold out her hands. The wood whistled through the freezing air, striking her exposed palms without hesitation. The sheer indignity of the brutal punishment rivaled the physical torment. Blood blistered beneath her skin, leaving her trembling in the snow.

Her uncle, Philip, stepped out from the shadows of the veranda once the maids retreated. He carefully grabbed her arms, helping her stand. Clara swayed, her legs numb and ruined.

"You could have fabricated an excuse," Philip suggested in a hushed tone, his brow furrowed in sympathy. "You could have claimed Declan was on a business trip. Madam Kensington would not have ordered this archaic beating if you gave her a plausible reason."

Clara refused to accept the easy way out. Her voice came out weak, yet steeped in unyielding resolve. "Philip, Grandma Genevieve raised me. I could easily lie to the rest of the world, but I refuse to lie to the woman who took me in."

She pulled away from his grasp and began the long walk down the treacherous mountain road alone. The Kensington estate sat high in the isolated peaks, leaving her stranded in the winter night. Every single step she took away from the sprawling, oppressive property sent sharp waves of pain radiating through her battered body. Despite the freezing wind whipping her face, the back of her ruined dress dripped with cold, clammy sweat. Her vision began to blur at the edges, the snow-covered trees morphing into dark, spinning shapes.

Unbeknownst to her, a sleek black Bentley crawled silently through the heavy snow just yards behind her staggering form. Inside the dimly lit backseat, a powerful man sat perfectly still. Heavy shadows cloaked his features, masking the enigmatic expression on his face.

In the front seat, his sharp-eyed assistant, Owen, scrolled through a glowing tablet. Owen glanced at the screen, confirming the sickening truth. "Sir, Declan is currently enjoying a publicized romantic night out with Vanessa. He is oblivious to what is happening here."

The shadowy man gave no response, his gaze fixed through the windshield on the swaying woman ahead.

"She has been subjected to the cold for hours," Owen noted carefully, watching Clara stumble. "Her body is reaching its physical limit."

Just as the words left his mouth, Clara's legs gave out. She collapsed face-first into the freezing snowbank, her body going limp.

Instantly, the heavy car door shoved open. The man surged from the Bentley with predatory speed, indifferent to the biting wind. He reached her in seconds, his large hands sweeping her freezing, unconscious form effortlessly off the ground. He wrapped her tight in his expensive, heavy cashmere coat, letting the warm fabric swallow her fragile frame.

"Drive us straight back to the private estate," he barked at Owen.

Owen scrambled to restart the engine. As the man settled Clara into the plush leather seat, the warm cabin light illuminated her brutalized, bloodied knees. A terrifying glint of pure wrath flickered in his dark eyes.

Without raising his voice, he stared at the swollen wounds. "Make arrangements," he commanded Owen. "I want swift, severe retaliation prepared against Damian Kensington the very moment the man returns to the city."

"Understood, sir."

Hours later, Clara fluttered her eyes open. She stared up at an unfamiliar, luxurious ceiling. The agonizing throb in her knees and palms had vanished into a dull, manageable ache. She pushed herself up against the pillows, finding her severe injuries expertly cleaned and bandaged. The spacious room sat in heavy quiet, but she caught a faint, unmistakable scent lingering in the warm air. The deep, masculine whiff of agarwood filled her senses.

Turning her head, she spotted a familiar tube of rare, custom-made medical ointment resting precisely on the mahogany nightstand. The distinct packaging and the lingering scent snapped her out of her pain-induced daze. A silent realization washed over her mind. She knew exactly who owned this estate and who had pulled her from the snow.

She scoffed silently at the sheer irony of the situation. Her own husband abandoned her to wolves, while the one man she tried to avoid became her savior. Refusing to linger, Clara pushed herself out of the bed. She dressed quickly in her dried clothes and walked out of the massive property, checking herself out without leaving a single word of thanks behind.

Arriving back at the stifling Vance villa, Clara limped through the heavy front doors. The quiet of the house broke instantly. Vanessa stood waiting in the foyer, wearing a profoundly smug expression. The widow raised a hand to her ear, brazenly flaunting a dazzling pair of rare pink diamond earrings.

Clara recognized the gems immediately. They were the exact, publicized 1.4 million dollar set that Declan had explicitly promised to buy for her months ago.

Vanessa tilted her chin upward, her smile dripping with pure venom. "Grandma Vance always claimed you have a spectacular eye for high-end jewelry, Clara. Declan just bought these for me. Do they seem worth the massive price tag?"

Clara met her taunting gaze. Instead of breaking down, a chilling, calm smile touched Clara's lips. She seamlessly pushed down the heavy wave of bitterness threatening to choke her.

"They are decent," Clara replied, stepping closer. She inspected the stones briefly before letting her voice drop to a smooth, business-like tone. "I should remind you, Vanessa, that legally, Declan and I are still married. Therefore, technically, precisely half of that 1.4 million dollar purchase constitutes joint marital property."

Vanessa's smug smile faltered.

Clara pulled out her phone, tapped a few buttons, and held the screen up. "Here is my bank account number. I expect you to wire exactly 700,000 dollars to this account before the stroke of midnight. If you fail to do so..." Clara offered a sweet, dangerous smile. "...I will simply have to take the issue up directly with Grandma Vance."

Leaving a furious and stunned Vanessa speechless in the foyer, Clara turned her back and retreated up the stairs.

She stepped into her bathroom and turned the shower on full blast. She scrubbed the scent of the hospital, the agarwood, and the mountain snow off her skin. As the hot water cascaded over her battered body, a calculated, icy detachment took root in her chest. She stepped out, dried off, and immediately began brutally decluttering her life.

Refusing to drag out her departure, Clara moved straight to the back of her massive walk-in closet. She reached past her daily wear and pulled out a heavy garment bag. Unzipping the fabric, she stared at her custom-made wedding dress.

Without an ounce of hesitation, she bundled the yards of intricate silk and lace together. She ordered a passing maid to bring a trash bag, tossing the expensive gown inside.

She lugged the heavy, bundled gown out of her bedroom and headed downstairs. Just as she carried the massive pile of white fabric toward the front door, the heavy entrance swung open.

Declan walked in, brushing snow off his shoulders. He stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes locked onto the unmistakable white fabric gathered in her hands.
