The Awakening Terror
CALLIOPE'S POV
"RUN!"
The single, frantic command detonates behind my eyes, shattering a mental silence that had stretched on for years. The shock of it hits me like a physical blow. For over a decade, the echoing chambers of my mind had been a barren wasteland. The familiar hum of an inner wolf had been stripped from me, leaving me to accept the bitter truth that my wolf, Nyla, was dead.
Yet, here she is. She does not return with a gentle purr. She breaches the surface of my consciousness with a panicked, blood-curdling shriek.
"Run!" she screams, her terror vibrating through the marrow of my bones.
I stand paralyzed. A jarring cocktail of profound confusion and visceral fear floods my veins, rooting my feet to the damp earth. I cannot process the sheer magnitude of Nyla’s dread. I blink rapidly, trying to clear the sudden sensory overload.
My gaze snaps to the source of her blind panic. Standing mere paces away from me in the dim moonlight is a towering, formidable man. The faint light catches his striking silver-gray eyes, and the intensity in his stare pierces straight through the darkness, pinning my soul to the spot.
The night air stretching between us grows thick and suffocating. It carries a rich, intoxicating scent that hits the back of my throat. Deep, crushed Rosewood mixed with the crisp musk of the wild forest. The moment the scent fills my lungs, an ancient biological response ignites in my blood. Every dormant instinct embedded in my werewolf DNA flares to life, demanding obedience.
*Mate.*
A magnetic, irresistible pull hooks into my center. It urges me to bridge the short distance separating us. My hands tremble as a desperate yearning blossoms inside my chest. I need to close the gap. I need to seek the profound safety and ultimate completion that only a true mate can offer. My fingers twitch, drifting upward to hover over the base of my neck.
Right there, hidden beneath my hair, sits the agonizing proof of my anomaly—a crescent moon seal branded into my flesh. In the long history of werewolves, my existence defies all logic. Werewolves are never born marked. They meet, shift, recognize their fated partners, and bite to seal the bond.
But I was born with this burning brand. A mate mark claimed me before I drew my first breath, sentencing me to a life of searing pain and unanswered questions. A mark is an official seal. I am already bound to him, stripped of any right to reject the bond.
Looking at the silver-gray eyes of the man before me, a desperate hope claws at my throat. He is real. I need him to unravel this lifelong mystery. I need him to explain why I am a broken anomaly.
I lean forward, my mouth opening to beg for the truth.
Before a single syllable passes my lips, Nyla seizes ironclad control of our shared body.
The takeover is brutal and immediate. My jaw snaps shut as muscles twist in a non-consensual contortion. Bones pop and reform in a rapid, agonizing symphony. My clothes rip to useless shreds, fabric tearing away as a thick coat of pristine white fur erupts from my shrinking skin.
I am a passenger in my own body. Nyla does not spare the towering man a single backward glance. Blinded by terror, she forces us into a dead sprint.
We flee wildly into the dense, unforgiving woods.
Paws tear up the damp forest floor. Low-hanging branches whip against our face, snagging in our white fur, but Nyla does not slow down. She runs aimlessly, propelled by pure fear.
*Stop!* I scream inward, fighting a vicious mental battle against her panic. *We need him!*
I claw at her dominance, trying to force our legs to halt. Why would a wolf fear her own fated mate? A mate means protection. But my desperate pleas drown in the chaotic flood of Nyla’s panic. I had forgotten how to wield control over her, and now, my lack of practice leaves me helpless.
Then, the night shatters.
A deafening, bone-chilling growl rips through the canopy. It is a sound of pure dominance. It silences the crickets, freezes the wind, and sends ice down my spine. The sheer power vibrating within that roar threatens to buckle my wolf's knees. We stumble, paws slipping on the slick moss, but Nyla scrambles past the brush, her terror overriding gravity.
A gigantic, nightmarish black shape materializes from the shadows.
The beast leaps into the moonlight, planting his massive frame directly in the center of our escape path.
Nyla tries to brake. She digs her claws deep into the soil, desperately altering our trajectory, but our frantic momentum betrays us. The black wolf does not flinch. He stands like a monolith, anticipating the impact.
We slam catastrophically into his unyielding, stone-like body.
*CRACK.*
The sharp, sickening sound of shattering bone echoes through the silent trees.
Blinding, white-hot agony explodes in my chest. Nyla unleashes a broken howl, reeling back from the collision. She stumbles backward, her pristine white fur dragging through the dirt as the world spins out of focus.
I gasp for air, but my lungs scrape against the jagged fragments of my ribcage. The pain is paralyzing. Due to the brutal nature of my lifelong curse, I possess none of the rapid healing abilities inherent to my kind. I cannot mend shattered bone in seconds. I feel the hot, searing agony exactly as a fragile, defenseless human would. Every breath is a knife twisting in my chest. My existence is a brittle joke.
Through the haze of pain, I watch the massive black wolf slowly raise his head. Arrogance drips from his dark maw. His red glowing eyes fixate on me, radiating an aura of terrifying, insurmountable power. The air around him crackles with lethal intent.
Recognizing the ancient danger swimming in those hellfire eyes, a pathetic whimper escapes Nyla's throat.
I know exactly who stands before me.
The Alpha King. Draven Thorne.
Every pack whispers his name in terrified reverence. Only the Alpha King commands a beast of this nightmare magnitude, draped in midnight fur and crowned with glowing red eyes.
He does not step forward to offer comfort.
"Submit!"
The guttural command vibrates through the dense forest air, slamming into my skull like a sledgehammer. Agonizing, crushing waves of Alpha pressure force their way into my brain, intent on driving me into the dirt.
Whimpering, utterly overwhelmed by the magnitude of his dominance, Nyla caves. She lowers her white head, pressing her snout flat against the damp earth in unconditional submission.
Yet, Draven’s deadly, suffocating aura does not recede.
He demands more than my surrender. He deliberately forces his overwhelming presence deeper into my mind, intentionally inflicting psychological torture to match my physical agony. A loud, disorienting buzzing noise drowns out my thoughts, vibrating against my eardrums.
"I finally found you, Mate."
His hateful, deep voice brutally penetrates my consciousness. The word 'Mate' drips with venom. It is a promise of violence.
He weaponizes his sheer Alpha intensity, pushing the crushing weight past the brink of my endurance. He attempts to force me into full dead mode, crushing my spirit until my mind ceases to function. He embodies every dark rumor I have ever heard. Cruel. Ruthless. Deadly.
The immense pressure becomes unbearable for Nyla. She cannot withstand the wrath of the Alpha King.
With a final, terrified whine, my wolf breaks. She retreats fully, fleeing back into the darkest, most unreachable depths of my mind.
Her abandonment triggers a painful, forced shift back to my human form. Bones grind in reverse, snapping back into their human configuration. Ruptured muscles tear and stretch.
I collapse onto the forest floor. The damp dirt clings to my bare skin. I am left naked, shivering in the cold night air, intensely vulnerable, and broken before the mighty Alpha King.
Draven steps closer, his massive black wolf towering over my fragile human body. He glares down at me, his glowing red eyes burning holes into my soul.
The agonizing physical pain of my shattered ribs catches in my throat, choking off the scream clawing at my lips. I cannot breathe. The edges of my vision darken, blurring the terrifying silhouette of my fated mate. My eyes roll to the back of my head as the sheer weight of his aura suffocates my fading consciousness.
As the darkness rises to claim me, a devastating realization settles over my heart.
The mate I had waited for my entire life did not come to cherish me. He did not come to claim me, to love me, or to answer the agonizing questions of my cursed existence.
He came to take his revenge.
He came to kill me.
And as my mind finally succumbs to the blackness, the most heartbreaking truth of all echoes in the void: I have no idea why.
