Throw This Woman Away
The rusted key scraped against the lock, catching twice before the cheap metal mechanism finally gave way. Maya pushed the flimsy door open, stepping into the cramped, two-bedroom apartment that would now serve as their sanctuary. The sprawling, intimidating city of NorthRidge roared incessantly outside the single smudge-stained window, a heavy mechanical hum that rattled the thin glass in its frame. Maya stood in the center of the narrow living space, clutching a faded envelope. She handed the thick stack of cash to the impatient landlord, watching her hard-earned six years of savings vanish in a single, painful transaction.
She turned to look at the tiny apartment. It was suffocatingly small, but there was no room for complaints. She had a monumental task ahead of her. She carried the unrelenting, urgent need to feed, clothe, and educate her six growing children in this massive city. Silas, Micah, Jonah, Angel, Queen, and Chloe were counting on her for a better life. The heavy burden of their survival forced her to push aside the lingering, toxic memories of Gideon's betrayal. Whenever the cold shadow of her past threatened to creep into her mind, she shoved it down. She had no time for ghosts. Knowing she could not afford to be unemployed for even a single week, she hit the pavement the very next morning. Through sheer hustle and desperate determination, she quickly secured a low-level job as a dental assistant at a local clinic.
On the morning of her third day, the sharp, sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the clinic air. Dr. Aris, the head dentist and her new boss, abruptly summoned her to his office. Maya hurried through the corridor, wiping her damp palms against her scrubs.
She found Dr. Aris standing behind his desk, a stern expression plastered across his face. Heavy sweat beaded on his forehead, reflecting the harsh fluorescent lights overhead.
"Listen to me carefully, Maya," Dr. Aris commanded, delivering a rigid directive. "I need you to be in the main laboratory by two o'clock sharp this afternoon. You must ensure that all necessary kits and specialized dental tools are flawlessly arranged on the tray. Every scaler, every mirror, every single instrument must be spotless and in its exact place."
Maya nodded, sensing the unusual, suffocating tension radiating from the man. "Yes, Doctor. I will prepare everything perfectly."
Dr. Aris leaned forward, his voice trembling as he spoke. "A special somebody is arriving for a teeth examination today. This man is not a regular walk-in. He demands absolute caution and perfection. One minor slip, one hesitation, and we are both finished. Do you understand me?"
"I understand," Maya replied, her heart picking up a nervous rhythm. She left his office and went straight to the sterilization room, determined to make zero mistakes. Her salary meant food on the table for her six children. She would not jeopardize it.
As the clock struck two, a massive commotion erupted outside the clinic’s front glass windows. The dull roar of NorthRidge traffic was abruptly drowned out by the deep, guttural growl of high-performance engines. Maya peeked through the blinds. A sleek, roaring Lamborghini sliced through the street, flanked tightly by six massive black jeeps. The formidable motorcade aggressively parted a huge, gathering crowd of onlookers who had swarmed the sidewalks to get a glimpse of the spectacle.
Dr. Aris appeared beside her. He was visibly anxious, practically vibrating with nervous energy as he adjusted his white coat.
"He is here," the dentist whispered frantically, his eyes wide with fear. "That is him. He is the absolute most powerful man in all of NorthRidge. A billionaire utterly notorious for his unforgiving, volatile temper. Keep your head down, Maya. Just hand me the tools."
Maya swallowed hard, nodding in agreement. She backed away from the window and rushed to the examination room, taking her place beside the dental chair.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed in the corridor. The clinic doors swung open, and the majestic, terrifying man entered the room. He instantly sucked the oxygen from the air. His aura was ruthlessly elegant, radiating a dark, crushing authority that made the hairs on Maya’s arms stand at attention. He wore a tailored dark suit that clung to his broad shoulders, moving with the slow grace of a predator. Two massive bodyguards stepped in behind him, but the billionaire himself commanded the room without lifting a finger.
Maya kept her head bowed, fixing her gaze on the linoleum floor. She did not dare look up at his face. She needed the money for her children, not the dangerous attention of a NorthRidge titan.
The man settled into the leather examination chair in dead silence. Dr. Aris stepped forward, bowing slightly, his brow gleaming with fresh sweat.
"Welcome, sir," Dr. Aris greeted, his voice tight and breathless. "We will begin the examination now."
The powerful man offered no response. The silence was deafening.
Dr. Aris adjusted the overhead light and leaned in. Maya stood at attention by the stainless-steel tray, her pulse pounding wildly in her ears.
"Cotton forceps," Dr. Aris requested urgently, extending his gloved hand toward her without looking away from the patient.
Maya’s hand hovered over the tray. Her eyes darted across the neat rows of metal instruments. Mirror. Explorer. Scaler. Saliva ejector.
No cotton forceps.
Panic seized Maya’s entire body. A bucket of ice water seemingly washed over her spine. She froze in place, her fingers hovering uselessly over the sterile cloth. She had forgotten to place them on the tray. In her desperate rush to ensure everything else was spotless, she missed a basic tool.
Dr. Aris snapped his fingers, agitation rolling off him in waves. "Forceps, Maya."
"I..." Maya stammered uncontrollably, her throat constricting in sheer horror. "I forgot them. I am so sorry. I will fetch them immediately."
She did not wait for his reprimand. She spun around and rushed out of the room in a blind panic, her rubber-soled shoes squeaking loudly against the floor. She sprinted down the hallway toward the sterilization lab, her chest heaving. She grabbed the packaged forceps, ripped the sterile seal open, and sprinted back down the corridor, praying the delay had only lasted a few seconds.
When she burst back into the examination room, she stopped dead in her tracks.
The leather chair was empty. The powerful man and his formidable wall of bodyguards had vanished.
Dr. Aris stood in the center of the room. He was pale, shaking, and furious. He walked over to the counter, grabbed a stark white envelope, and silently handed her a termination letter.
Maya stared at the paper, devastated by the crushing reality of being fired over a single, nervous slip-up. "Fired?" she whispered, her voice breaking. "Please, Doctor."
"Get out," Dr. Aris hissed, pointing toward the door.
"Please, I am begging you!" Maya pleaded desperately, clutching the white letter. The faces of her six hungry children flashed vividly in her mind. Silas, Micah, Jonah, Angel, Queen, Chloe. Six mouths relying on this meager paycheck. "I need this job! I will work overtime! I cannot lose this!"
The dentist remained entirely unyielding, his face hardened with fear and anger. "The man who gave the order to fire you is no ordinary person. His word is final law in this city. If you want to beg, you must go directly to him. Leave my clinic."
Thinking only of her children’s survival, Maya crumpled the letter in her fist and bolted. She dashed out of the examination room, her footsteps echoing loudly as she sprinted down the clinic stairs. She pushed through the glass entrance doors, hitting the pavement at a full sprint.
The motorcade was still there, engines purring with lethal intent. The towering billionaire was mere inches from his Lamborghini, his hand reaching out to touch the sleek door handle.
"Wait!" Maya screamed, sprinting across the pavement to intercept him.
Four burly, aggressive guards instantly swarmed, moving to block her path and shove her into the concrete. Maya burst desperately past the first two, dodging a massive arm, and fell to a sudden halt just feet away from the billionaire.
She finally looked up, panting heavily. She saw his face clearly for the very first time.
Her breath hitched sharply in her throat.
The world around her stopped spinning. The sounds of the roaring engines and the aggressive shouts of the bodyguards faded into a dull ringing in her ears. The man staring down at her bore a striking, undeniable, and utterly terrifying resemblance to her three little boys. The sharp jawline, the piercing dark eyes, the exact proud shape of his brow. It was as if she were looking at an older, hardened, ruthless version of Silas, Micah, and Jonah. A phantom in the flesh.
The bodyguards lunged forward to drag her away. The man coldly raised a single, gloved hand.
The guards halted their advance instantly.
Trembling uncontrollably under his overwhelming, suffocating presence, Maya found her voice. She had to save her job. She pushed the shocking revelation of his face to the back of her mind.
"Sir, please," Maya pleaded earnestly, her voice shaking but desperate. "It is only my third day. I apologize for forgetting the equipment. I was nervous. Please spare my job. I am extremely hardworking. My children need me to work. I promise I will never make a mistake like that again."
For thirty agonizing, heart-stopping seconds, the towering billionaire simply stared down at her. He offered no reaction. He possessed a chilling, dead-eyed indifference that made Maya’s blood run cold. The silence stretching between them felt incredibly dangerous, heavy with a dark pressure. The air grew thick, pressing down on her lungs. She felt like a small, helpless animal about to be swallowed alive by an apex predator. His gaze pierced right through her, acknowledging nothing of her struggle.
The prolonged silence broke her resolve. Overcome with immense trepidation, Maya realized her begging was futile. This man had no heart. Deciding it was best to accept her grim fate before he decided to punish her further, Maya lowered her head. She turned her back to him, preparing to flee back toward the empty clinic.
Instantly, his voice boomed behind her like a crack of thunder.
"How dare you leave?"
An icy shiver shot straight down her spine. The sheer authority and malice in those few words locked her joints. Maya stood paralyzed on the pavement, her feet glued to the concrete. Her tongue tied in knots of sheer terror. She could not speak. She could not even force herself to turn back around.
The special man took a slow, deliberate step toward his Lamborghini, his expensive leather shoes clicking softly against the pavement. Without sparing her another glance, he opened the car door.
He casually and ruthlessly ordered his guards, "Throw this woman away."
