The Obsidian Alpha

POV: Kaelen

I stand at the head of the heavy mahogany table, gripping the polished wood until my knuckles turn white. The air inside the meeting room is thick, choking on the scents of stale coffee, sour nervous sweat, and the bruised egos of weak, whiny former Alphas. I am sick to my stomach just looking at them. I created this system, of course. I designed these mandatory monthly gatherings to maintain strict order across the massive, sprawling territories I absorbed into the Obsidian Moon pack over the last decade. But I never expected these displaced leaders to be such insufferable bitches. Every month, their complaints grow louder, their spines weaker, and their demands more trivial. It is no wonder they failed to hold onto their own packs in the first place. If they cannot even manage a simple council meeting without breaking into petty squabbles over hunting rights and border patrols, they never stood a chance against the real threats of our world.

I am supposed to be getting ready for the new Alphas ceremony coming up, a transition of power that always brings its own set of relentless headaches. I do not envy the three young, untested new Alphas preparing to take up their mantles. Some of the old, pompous assholes sitting on the Elders Council like to throw their weight around, trying to force these kids to bow down and fall in line. They want obedient puppets, not strong leaders. But the entire point of appointing a new Alpha is to inject fresh blood and new ideas into the hierarchy. We are supposed to evolve, to learn from past mistakes and triumphs. Instead, we are constantly dragged backward by men who refuse to let go of their fading power.

I took over my father’s prominent pack at the untested age of sixteen. My father was a legend, but he was severely injured in a brutal territorial war. Even with his pure Alpha lineage and accelerated healing powers, his body never fully recovered. He knew the pack needed a strong, capable leader, so he stepped down and placed the crushing weight of the Obsidian Moon on my teenage shoulders. I can hardly believe I have been doing this for ten grueling years. For a decade, I have meticulously carved out an unforgiving, terrifying reputation. I had to. A sixteen-year-old boy does not command respect from seasoned warriors unless he gives them a visceral reason to fear him. I built a regime designed specifically to keep egotistical, power-hungry pricks strictly in line. I let my silence do the heavy lifting, letting my actions speak through broken bones and shattered rebellions. Some of these men need a harsh reminder of where they stand, but today, I just want this meeting over with.

"Alpha Kaelen? Will you please help us?"

The trembling, fragile voice shatters my dark internal monologue. I shift my gaze down the long length of the table to Alpha Arthur. He sits slumped in his large leather chair, a hollow, diminishing shell of the man he used to be. His profound physical and emotional weariness is glaringly evident in every raspy syllable. He has no heir. His pack is small, vulnerable, and sitting on prime hunting grounds that make him a massive target.

Ever since the tragic, devastating loss of his fated Luna years ago—she died in childbirth, taking the pup and a massive piece of his soul with her—Arthur’s life force has been steadily and noticeably weakening. He never took a chosen mate. He never sought out a second chance mate. He just withered away, day by day, consumed by a grief that never fades. The scent of decay and heartbreak hangs heavy over him. Now, he rightfully fears that his deeply loyal pack members will soon be targeted. Ambition is a disease, and his own ranks are infected. Challengers are rising within his borders, sensing his physical weakness, while ruthless neighboring packs circle like starving vultures, looking for the perfect excuse to expand their lands.

"I have held on as long as I can, Kaelen," Arthur continues, his eyes pleading, dim and sunken into his skull. "But I cannot risk my people any longer. The neighbors are not known for settling disputes peacefully. If they invade, they will use it as an excuse to kill at will. Women, children, the innocent—they will all get caught in the crossfire. And the violence will not end there. It will bleed out into the surrounding territories. I am begging for an immediate, peaceful transfer of my entire pack and lands directly to your control. Before any innocent blood is shed."

"Yes, of course, Alpha Arthur. You have my word," I assure him, my voice devoid of any hesitation. I do not normally step in before a pack thins its own herd; usually, I let the weak fall before I clean up the mess. But Arthur's neighbors are butchers. They would turn a simple power struggle into a chaotic massacre, and that chaos would inevitably threaten my own borders.

I lean forward, resting my forearms on the table, locking eyes with the aging man. "You do not need to worry about the internal challengers biding their time. My highly lethal, deeply embedded elite warriors are already securing the vulnerable borders of your lands as we speak. I planted them weeks ago when the rumors first reached me. Anyone who tries to make a move against your loyalists tonight will meet a very swift, brutal end."

Arthur lets out a shaky, shuddering breath, the immense tension finally leaving his frail shoulders.

"We will officially leave tomorrow morning at first light," I explain smoothly, outlining the logistics of the acquisition. "I want you to stay close to me during the journey, just as a precaution. Have your Beta set up the ancient transfer ceremony. We will assume command as soon as we are physically able. Your ranked members—your Beta and Gamma—will maintain their titles and positions within my hierarchy, provided they understand exactly who they answer to now. They will not lose their livelihoods simply because our packs are merging."

"Thank you, Kaelen," Arthur whispers, sounding incredibly weary. It is obvious he has only been holding on through sheer willpower, waiting until he could ensure his pack was safely taken care of before letting go.

Watching his crippling grief over his lost mate serves as a stark, visceral reminder of exactly why I am fiercely glad that I have not officially found my own fated Luna yet. My wolf snarls in the back of my mind at the thought, pacing in agitation and scratching at my mental walls, but I shove the beast down with brutal force. The pain of losing a mate is universally known to be the worst kind of torture imaginable. It destroys the mind. It drives Alphas to madness. I have had to personally dispatch several former Alphas simply because the agonizing heartbreak turned them into rabid, unpredictable liabilities to everyone around them.

An Alpha is supposed to be at his strongest with his destined mate by his side. But I look at Arthur, and all I see is the terrifying aftermath. I view the intense, world-burning love of a Luna as a massive, crippling vulnerability. That violent, all-consuming possessiveness an Alpha intrinsically feels for his destined mate is a weapon someone else can easily use against him. It is a tight leash around his neck. If someone captured my mate, if someone even dared to threaten her, they would have absolute control over me. I would burn the entire world to ash to get her back. There is nothing I wouldn't do, no line I wouldn't cross, no innocent life I wouldn't sacrifice.

I already know the extreme, terrifying acts of violence I am fully capable of committing just to keep my current family safe. Years ago, some arrogant idiot had the audacity to put his hands on my little sister after she explicitly told him no. I did not hesitate. I ripped the man's arms clean out of their sockets with my bare hands. I stood there, covered in his blood, listening to his screams, feeling nothing but a cold, dark satisfaction as bone crunched and muscle tore beneath my grip. If I would inflict that kind of pure agony for my sister, what kind of monster would I become for a mate? The sheer magnitude of that uncontrollable, violent devotion presses tightly against my chest, suffocating me. I simply do not ever want to bear that burden. I refuse to let anyone have that kind of devastating effect on my psyche.

My incredibly thin patience is tested even further when the meeting room doors swing open wider, and Victor Vane strides in.

"It is about damn time, Alpha Kaelen."

The arrogant, grating voice snaps my attention away from Arthur. I slowly turn my head, clenching my jaw. Victor Vane is a notorious thorn in my side.

"Some of us actually have pressing, important matters to attend to," Victor sneers, crossing his arms over his chest as he glares at the room. "And you are just sitting here shooting the shit with old, washed-up Alphas who are not worth your valuable time."

I let out a slow, measured breath. "Hello, Victor. What pressing matter do you have for me this time?" I pointedly refuse to use his former title, a deliberate slight that makes him visibly bristle. He no longer has an Alpha title because I took it from him with my own hands.

Victor is a constant, irritating pain in the ass. Very early in my brutal reign over the Obsidian Moon pack, he foolishly decided to challenge me. He thought it would be incredibly easy to defeat a sixteen-year-old kid and claim my father’s massive empire for himself. He severely underestimated my combat skills, and he underestimated how quickly his own people would willingly submit to my style of leadership once I broke him in the fighting ring. Unfortunately, I was young and naive enough back then to let him maintain a tiny fraction of localized control after his defeat. Now, he still desperately clings to his former, useless title, constantly pushing boundaries and testing my authority.

Without waiting for permission, he aggressively leads me away from the mahogany table and over to a large topographical map mounted on the far wall. He points a thick, calloused finger at a highly strategic piece of land positioned several miles outside his currently recognized borders.

"I believe a massive new school and warrior training facility would work best in this area right here," he arrogantly proposes, tapping the map.

I stare at the coordinates, tracing the natural rivers and the high ground advantage. He wants me to grant him more land, fund the construction, and let him run a facility that sits well outside his jurisdiction. He clearly, and very foolishly, thinks I am still that naive teenager he first met. He wants to expand his territory, making his people more comfortable while subtly increasing his own power base before I can stop him. What he completely fails to realize is that I have already spent years deliberately and strategically surrounding his entire pathetic territory with heavily armed leaders who are fiercely loyal only to me. His borders are a cage, and I hold the key.

Knowing with certainty that this proposal is just a transparent, thinly veiled land grab attempt, my strategic mind goes to work. I effortlessly outmaneuver his pathetic scheme.

"I will talk to Don and see exactly what he thinks about sharing a brand new school and training facility," I counter smoothly, my voice dripping with forced politeness.

Victor’s smug expression immediately drops. "Sharing?"

"Yes," I quickly add, leaning closer to the map and tracing the supply routes with my index finger. "Since that land is well outside your borders, I will purposefully shift the position a bit and open the generous offer to Miles and Gavin as well. It makes sense geographically. It will be much closer to the residential areas for both of their packs. We will also need to construct a small healer’s center on the grounds, so none of the trainees have to travel far for emergency medical care."

Victor just stands there, gaping at me like a suffocating fish. By forcing him to legally and financially share the new facility with Don, Miles, and Gavin—three powerful, seasoned leaders who absolutely won't tolerate a single ounce of his bullshit—I completely neutralize his entire greedy scheme before it can even begin. With four leaders controlling the grounds, it will have to be strictly cooperative. He has lost his stronghold before a single brick is laid. He should have thought better before bringing this amateur trap to me.

"If you will excuse me," I coldly tell him, leaving him standing frozen by the map. "I have another meeting that I must get to. Make sure you formally submit your ridiculous proposal in writing to Fiona as soon as possible. I will let you know the results by the end of the week."

I walk away without a backward glance. I have spent enough time entertaining these fools. I have to handle Arthur’s pack transfer as quickly and efficiently as possible, finalize the logistics with my embedded warriors, and get on the road. Once the transfer is complete, I can finally get to the prestigious Elders Council.

My urgent, protective focus mentally shifts away from the map and directly to my family. My aging dad and my incredibly vulnerable twenty-year-old sister are currently at the Council acting in my place while I handle these territory disputes. I pace toward the door, my heart rate accelerating just thinking about it. I hate leaving her alone in that viper's nest.

The Elders Council is a den of manipulative, ancient wolves clutching onto fading traditions. My sister hasn't found her mate yet. She is young, beautiful, and carries our potent Alpha bloodline descent. Because of that, she is a massive target. I know for a fact that several older, deeply disgusting, unmated Alphas have been aggressively eyeing her up over the last year. They want her as a chosen or second chance mate. They want to use her bloodline to legitimize their own claims to power.

I shot all of those advances down the second they started, making it brutally clear what I would do to anyone who approached her. But my reputation only extends so far when I am not physically standing in the room. I know those predatory bastards will not stop trying while I am miles away. They will use the formal setting of the Council to trap her in conversations, cornering her with their predatory bullshit, breathing their disgusting scent of decay and ambition all over her.

I push open the heavy oak doors of the meeting room, my boots echoing sharply in the hallway. She needs to be protected at all times. I desperately need to be there in person, standing between her and those leering, pathetic men. If one of them so much as breathes on her the wrong way, the Elders Council is going to need a lot more than a new healer’s center to clean up the mess I leave behind.
