The Missing Ring
Elara’s POV
The coronation ceremony was in full swing, turning the moonlit clearing into a roaring sea of celebration. Laughter and music drifted through the crisp night air, a joyous symphony crashing against the deep, hollow void inside my chest. Today was supposed to be a milestone—my third anniversary with my mate, Alpha Dravos. He had claimed he was far too busy with pack duties for any personal celebrations. He said he had no time to stand beneath the moon with me. Yet, as I lingered in the cold shadows of the tree line, I saw him standing at the very center of the sunlit clearing.
He was not busy. And he was not alone.
Dravos stood right beside Sivya, the council’s seemingly perfect heir. She had just been promoted to female pilot of the Aero-Flight Wing, and she was currently basking in the adoration of the entire pack.
My eyes drifted down to his hand, and a sharp, physical sting hit my chest. The silver wedding band he once swore to the Moon Goddess he would never remove was glaringly absent. A bare finger. A blatant erasure of my existence.
The betrayal was immediate and suffocating.
Sivya played her role perfectly. She rushed forward, throwing her arms around Dravos’s neck with a bright, ringing laugh. Then, she spoke. Her voice carried over the crackling bonfires, a velvet-wrapped blade designed to cut deep.
"Alpha Dravos, you promised," Sivya purred, tilting her head back to look into his eyes. "You said that upon my promotion to female pilot, you would give me something unique. A token of loyalty and love. Tell me, Alpha... were those words mere pillow talk?"
The surrounding wolves erupted into a wild, deafening frenzy. They howled at the sky, clapping and snarling in joyous approval. They inherently believed this was it. They believed Sivya was his newly revealed Luna.
And why wouldn't they? Dravos had never publicly claimed me. He kept me hidden, treating me as a mere shadow in his grand life.
Standing in the center of the cheering circle, Dravos smiled. It was a cold, calculated smirk I barely recognized. Without a word of denial, he reached into the inner pocket of his tailored coat.
The object he pulled out made my blood freeze.
It was my mother's ruby ring. The last tether I had to her memory, bought with my own desperate begging.
Dravos held it up, catching the firelight. Without a hint of hesitation, he reached for Sivya’s hand and began sliding the priceless heirloom onto her finger.
Something profound and fragile inside me shattered.
I didn't think. I just moved.
Ignoring all pack decorum, I lunged out of the shadows. I shoved my way through the thick circle of cheering wolves, my boots tearing up the dirt.
"Wait!" I screamed, my voice ripping through the air.
The music stopped. The howling died. The entire pack gasped in collective outrage. Every eye snapped toward me, blazing with judgment.
"Who let her in here?" an elder sneered from the front row.
From the edge of the firelight, Krovan stepped forward. The heavily armed enforcer crossed his arms, a cruel smirk twisting his scarred face. He openly sneered at my interruption. "Look at this," Krovan mocked loudly. "The ungrateful Omega is ruining a sacred moment. Pathetic."
Desperation clouded my vision. I ignored them all, keeping my eyes fixed on the ruby gleaming against Sivya’s pale skin. I reached out to snatch the ring back.
But Dravos’s reflexes were faster.
His hand snapped out, catching my wrist mid-air. His grip was an iron vise of authority, locking me in place.
"It’s hers now," Dravos commanded. His voice lacked any warmth, empty of the mate I thought I knew.
"But you promised," I whispered, staring up at him. The heartbreak bled into every syllable.
He didn't even blink. His eyes remained empty, devoid of guilt. "It was a gift," he stated flatly, his voice carrying over the silent crowd. "For Sivya. To celebrate her promotion."
Promotion.
He was giving away my mother’s soul to celebrate a rank.
I stared at the male I gave my life to, the realization crystallizing in my mind. The fog of heartbreak burned away, leaving behind a terrifying clarity.
"What if I told you I wasn’t asking?" I challenged. My tone shifted from desperate to dangerous, a low warning he was too arrogant to recognize.
Behind him, Krovan barked a harsh, mocking laugh. "Hear that? The toothless gold-digger is making threats!" he loudly degraded me. "She’s clinging to her betters because she knows she’s nothing without the Alpha’s charity."
Sivya scoffed. She looked down at the ring, her eyes gleaming with manufactured pity.
"Please," she lied smoothly, slipping the ruby off her finger. "I didn’t even want it. It looks cheap anyway."
She casually tossed the heavy ruby gem directly at my feet.
It hit the dirt with a dull, pathetic thud.
Snickers rippled through the judgmental crowd. The elders muttered insults about my lack of class, their eyes filled with disdain.
Slowly, maintaining what little dignity I had left, I dropped to my knees in the dirt. I reached out and pressed the cold gem into my palm, letting the sharp metal edges bite into my skin.
They looked down at me and saw only a pitiful, orphaned Omega groveling in the dust. They were oblivious to the truth standing right in front of them.
They did not know this ring belonged to Healer Olyra—a decorated war hero who saved thousands on the blood-soaked battlefields. They did not know my father was Garrick Valkar, the legendary Ghost General of the Steelmaw.
And they certainly did not know that I, Elara, am Garrick's only daughter.
A lethal, former black-ops Alpha commander.
For three grueling years, I had suppressed my dominant Alpha pheromones through raw, agonizing will. It was a daily torture, a brutal cage I built around my own soul. I desperately hid my true nature just to experience a pure love unclouded by pack dominance or military rank.
I had given Dravos everything. I secretly funded his entire rise to power, using my fallen parents' blood-money to build his empire. I built the foundation of his pack in secret, playing the meek Omega while handling the ruthless logistics in the shadows.
And for all that sacrifice, I was cast aside in the dirt, traded for a council heir who threw my mother's legacy at my feet like trash.
Slowly, I rose to my feet.
The agonizing ache in my chest didn't disappear, but it shifted. It solidified into pure ice. The wolf beneath my skin, starved and suppressed for years, stirred with a cold, terrifying fury.
I looked at Dravos, my voice steady and void of tears.
"Forget the ring," I said. The words cut through the clearing. "Tomorrow, my parents return from the Dawnward Frontier. I want you beside me. Stand as my mate."
It was a test. A final ultimatum.
For the very first time today, his arrogant composure wavered. A brief flash of guilt crossed his eyes as he realized he had pushed me to an edge he couldn't see.
He hesitated, the silence stretching tight, before he finally murmured, "Alright."
I didn't smile. I didn't thank him. I just turned my back on him.
I walked away with measured steps, ignoring the relentless sneers of the pack parting around me. I ignored Krovan's cruel, echoing jeers about my dead parents. None of their voices mattered anymore. The illusion was broken.
I held the ruby ring tighter against my skin, feeling its cold pulse against my palm.
"Rest easy," I whispered to the stone, the night wind catching my words. "Tomorrow, you come home."
I stepped past the boundary of the clearing, leaving the firelight and the cheering behind me.
Let them think Sivya will be their Luna. Let them believe their Alpha knows loyalty, that he built his throne with his own two hands.
The day they learn the truth, the shame won’t be mine to carry.
It will be theirs.
